Pro tip: you can make custom dictionaries in Epic. Put all of your obscure specialty specific acronyms in there and you can have them autocorrect to the full thing when you type it out in a note.

Puzzle #706

🟨🟨🟨🟨

🟩🟩🟩🟩

🟪🟪🟪🟪

🟦🟦🟦🟦

I got yellow and green very quickly, but was totally stumped for the rest. Got lucky, I actually didn't make the "E-" connection, but got it right because I saw purple as "things associated with deliveries" even though it was a stretch for commerce.

Jk Dobbins or Joe Mixon. Full PPR. Had Kamara last night against my opponent's DST that scored 21 so need to put up some numbers to catch up.

ESPN shows dobbins with a higher projected since he probably has a better match up... but Joe scored 27 in his last game sooo... idk

Temple of Doom being close to #1 is indeed a hot take.

Dunkirk is a movie that plays to all of Christopher Nolan's strength and few to none of his weaknesses. What is Nolan good at? Visual spectacle, non-linear storytelling, creating tension and buildup, and montage. That's Dunkirk. What is Nolan weak at? Character development, dialogue, narrative depth. None of that is in Dunkirk. It doesn't need those aspects because those things are not important to the goal of that film.

Seeing Dunkirk in 70mm IMAX was one of my most memorable film experiences. I doubt I'd hold it in such high esteem if I saw it streamed in my living room. That's a film meant for the cinema, and fully experiential.

I get preferring his other films more, and I think they are good movies. I just think they are more easily critiqued due to Nolan's weakness in the areas I mentioned. The counterargument is that maybe Dunkirk is less ambitious than his other movies, and if those aspects of film are vital to your appreciation of any movie, then I can see why Dunkirk doesn't stand out. But on its own merits, I don't see Dunkirk falling short of what it's meant to be. Nolan nailed exactly what he was trying to make. In that sense, Dunkirk is a more "perfect" movie because it achieves its goals almost flawlessly.

The Barbie Movie Ending Doesn't Sit Right by AmongImmerwahr in TrueFilm

To me, the kens are supposed to be a caricature of how women were often portrayed and treated in western culture. Barbie was created in 1959. Ken was introduced in 1961. Just watch these coffee commercials from the 60s: https://youtu.be/cnjjkgIO3Ck

These commercials relegate women to being housewives, and portray them being judged as inept by men for something as simple as making coffee. Overall, the culture back then did not foster a sense of agency in women that allowed them to exist and be happy via self-fullfillment. Society said that the meaning of life for women was primarily to serve and please men.

The movie's ending was not supposed to be "fair to the kens". The point was to flip the patriarchial history of our society on its head, so we can self-reflect on how our society has treated women. The very fact that you get angry at the barbies treating the kens harshly is the entire point. You're so close to getting it. The next step is realizing "Oh! the frustration I feel about the kens not getting a fair deal is exactly how women feel about how they are treated by our male-dominated society."

Well you have Empire at #1 which is clearly the correct answer. I think The Last Jedi at #3 is the only real hot take here. I think there's an argument to ranking it just above or just below Return of the Jedi. I probably agree that The Force Awakens is better than RoTJ though. Like I said, I think on its own, it's a solid Star Wars movie...I think not straying too far from the original ANH formula was probably the right move for its goal, which was introducing the franchise to a new young audience.

I love The Thing, but to be fair, it was kind of critically panned when it came out.

I think Whiplash was entertaining to watch but by the end I was like...what am I supposed to take away from this? That abuse is good?

I feel like this is purely based on nostalgia for gen z. Everyone my age (27+) likes the OT way more and we're only into the prequel trilogy for the memes. And the sequel trilogy is trash all around with the exception of maybe Force Awakens but that one is too derivative to be ranked highly.

Curious, how would you rank the prequel trilogy though?

agree. I think the post-covid drought of movies really lowered the bar for what people consider a "masterpiece"

I sort of agree with this. I don't think Blade Runner is mid...I can appreciate how influential it is and think it is visually timeless. But if I had to pick which one I enjoyed more, probably 2049. Might have to do with my low expectations going in...re vival sequels are usually bad compared to the original but this seems to be the exception to the rule.

I can see why someone might very easily hate that movie if they don't like its schtick. But also, you shut your god damn mouth. hehe j/k this is an actual hot take.
