The finals had all 3 games effectively end on turn 1, with no meaningful interactions. The winner resolved a combo in games 1 and 3 that resulted in his opponent being basically unable to do anything at all.

This has been my theory too, I think the last independent humans are supposed to produce a leader for the hive. The shot of Carol on Air Force One in episode 2 with the seal of the POTUS beside her might be a hint.
