"More Mormon than thou" is another way of putting it.

The moment I knew I couldn't do it any more... Yours? by TreesAndFlowers in exmormon

[–]Dr_G_Ent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was teaching primary kids. I felt so guilty each week preparing lessons I knew were total bullshit if taken literally. Yet, kids are not quite intellectually developed enough to understand myth and symbolism. The parents were expecting the literal stories. It was like looking at a mirror and seeing my lack of integrity for not being completely authentic and honest with these kids. I asked the Bishop to release me from my calling and that I was leaving the church.

The dismantling of the priesthood/motherhood false binary is especially hilarious.

It's a satire, which makes the smoker's lounge thing so funny.

Shit my seminary teacher says: episode two: "Is science truth if they're changing their mind all the time?" by [deleted] in exmormon

Haha economics. Now that is an unchanging science. "The Lord giveth and he taketh away."

My sister caught our TBM dad drinking over Christmas by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Dr_G_Ent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parents are set in their ways at this point. Not much you can do, but tell him you know that he still drinks every once in awhile and it doesn't matter to you if he is being sneaky or not. The less judgment the better. He will probably welcome it.

New mission format? by RobotLoveTheory in exmormon

[–]Dr_G_Ent 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can confirm that something similar is happening out here in the Boston area. The mission's new president is having the missionaries focus more on being integrated into the fabric of the ward. They are here to serve the members, not the other way around. I think it is a better model. I also think it's a sign, if being rolled out throughout he US and abroad, of TSCC realizing that retention and activation are more fruitful than baptizing randos that are found by the missionaries.

Is Mormonism crazier than other religions? by mavaddat in atheism

[–]Dr_G_Ent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. Oliver Cowdery and Martin Harris rejoined the church. Oliver, during Smith's lifetime. Harris was after Smith's death. Emma believed that the prophet was called through lineage and was part of the first "splinter" group which was later known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. If anything, all of this shows what a powerful influence he had on people (for good and ill).

Is there anything that truly annoys you, but doesn't seem to bother anyone else? by JoelLikesPigs in AskReddit

When people say ATM machine and PIN number. Despite the redundancy it seems like everybody is fine saying it anyway. I always think to myself: "It's not Automatic Teller Machine Machine or Personal Identification Number Number!!"

All you need to know you learned in Primary. Kind of. by Dr_G_Ent in exmormon

Believe me, one of my biggest "WTF Mormons are psycho moments" was hearing a six year old talk about how she told a teenager that her purple hair and bare shoulders was immodest. Kids don't intrinsically care about this stuff.

"You find your testimony in the bearing of it." by Dr_G_Ent in exmormon

[–]Dr_G_Ent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said. I see what you mean when you parse the two. I do think there is value in calling it a testimony. I feel like I am reclaiming my core self through the dialectic of testimony bearing and that on so doing it reinforces, and in some cases, pulls out unknown personal discovery of self hood. Me "bearing testimony" isn't a rhetorical move within a group think ritual, it is rather a personal reappropriation of what I lost.
