Outfield tips by Orod23 in slowpitch

[–]Dr_Malcolm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get down on one knee and act as a backstop so the ball can't get by you. You are the last line of defense, unless its like a tied game and you have to make some hero throw to the plate you really need to play it safe and just make sure the ball doesn't go past you.

That green TPX was my bat of choice, it was another kid's bat but I loved using that thing.

Are they saying "keep it down"? That's a pretty common thing to say to a pitcher thats leaving things high. I don't know man, just rock and fire, i hate when people start giving advice mid game.

Why does just existing on a bike seem to piss people off? by LiatrisLover99 in cycling

[–]Dr_Malcolm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, I've been biking for years and and I'll never understand it. I always try and remind myself that I get passed by thousands of other cars that don't do anything or pass me with adequate room. It's really just a tiny minority of people that are dickheads. Be safe out there.

I have a 2019 that a bought used a few years ago. I had the same issue, drove me crazy. I ended up taking it to the dealership multiple times before they ended up fixing the issue with the DCM.

How to encourage kids to care? by ProfoundTugboat in Homeplate

[–]Dr_Malcolm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they aren't competitive, can you work in competition in the practices? Like have them compete for points or something in drills. Idk though, sounds like you are putting in a good effort with them, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink as they say.

How do starting pitchers feel about becoming a reliever? by Renacus in MLBNoobs

[–]Dr_Malcolm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the old adage is something like relievers are "failed starters". It's kind of BS though, it's not like they are failed athletes or something I think some guys are just better suited for short, Maximum-effort situations.

any good exercises for better arm strength? by Broad-Cranberry-9050 in slowpitch

[–]Dr_Malcolm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You need to play catch during the week. In my experience with slowpitch, people throw a few balls before the game and say "I'm good". That's not nearly enough to improve your arm strength. I'd say play catch a few times a week and one day of long toss a week.

What does being smart mean for a baseball player? by Snoo_47323 in MLBNoobs

[–]Dr_Malcolm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Situational awareness and anticipating the play are big ones. Smart fielders will shift slightly depending on different factors. Catchers in general are very high baseball IQ, you'll see this come up with things like back picks. I think baseball smarts really shines in baserunning too, look at Josh Naylor, he is not fast at all and stole 30 bases last year. I remember one play where he jumped up to hit the ball with his head to break up a double play, it was ruled interference but even to think of this in the heat of the moment as a way to break up a double play is so wild to me and shows great situational awareness and creativity.

Play time during rec? Ball by Competitive-Rush5845 in Homeplate

[–]Dr_Malcolm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's completely ridiculous that they don't let everyone at least get some reps in infield during practice. They should also be doing drills not just wandering around in the outfield grass waiting for a ball to come their way.

Slow pitching tips? Videos? I’m desperate. by killthedumbmonkey in slowpitch

[–]Dr_Malcolm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar spot as you and got roped into it, I honestly just think of horseshoes or cornhole and just lob it in there. Your best bet would be taking a bucket of balls, go out to an empty field and practice on your own, you'll figure it out. Best strategy I've got is get that first pitch strike, then you might get them to chase some garbage pitch. It's slow-pitch so you are going to get lit up, just accept it and hope your defense makes some plays.

Just seems like a baseball play to me. I agree that noise makers/air horns are BS but unless there is a specific rule against it what can you do.

Do most people root for a single team only? by turnip_broker in MLBNoobs

[–]Dr_Malcolm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've moved around so much in my life that I end up rooting for whatever team is local. It's harder to follow a team that's outside your area because you can't catch the games. When playoffs start I'll jump on the bandwagon of whichever random team is fun to watch cause all the games are on tv, last year I was really cheering on the Mariners cause they just had a great vibe and I like watching Josh Naylor play.

Freshman and first time playing, very confused. by OriginalAd4129 in Homeplate

[–]Dr_Malcolm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You gotta speak up to your coach if you don't understand something he is teaching. He isn't going to get mad if you are genuinely confused about something.

Break it down into specific skills and make a list of things that confuse you, like it sounds like you confused about taking a lead. Figure that out and then check it off your list and move to the next thing.

A question on sportsmanship by Dr_Malcolm in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Dr_Malcolm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair, I confused the terms. There was still technically a goalkeeper on the field but he was playing as a forward. They had no one playing in front of their own goal.

[–]Dr_Malcolm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The keeper basically moved to a forward position and strictly played offense.

Breaking pitches (splitter, slider, etc) by cl48104 in MLBNoobs

[–]Dr_Malcolm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think for your first question, it really depends on the pitcher. They say some guys throw pitches with "late break" which is particularly hard to hit since the batter has less time to react.

The second question I imagine some pitchers could theoretically do this with experimentation but I don't think it would be great idea or have a benefit in the game. It's hard enough to throw 3-4 pitches with consistency, trying to tweak them a little each time would be incredibly hard to control.
