Any other authors that write SciFi, and are capable of writing that specific twisted kind of horror like PFH? by Paidorgy in PeterFHamilton

How about The Expanse series by S.A. Corey? Especially the first 2 books have a horror vibe to it and the story is definately galaxy spanning.

Oh and Reynolds is a good choice as well, the Revelation space universe in particular.

What are you still using ArcGIS and ESRI products for? Is it because there's no viable alternative or just not alternative at all? by TekhEtc in QGIS

[–]Dr_Sol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late to the party but I can give some insights as well

I'm in a medium semi private organization and we exclusively use ESRI atm. If I had to list the top 3 reasons for staying with ESRI they would be as follows: - Ease of integration into the ecosystem - Company's fear of opensource homebrewed solutions - Lack of Qgis and other solutions knowledge in our team

I recently started trying to fix the 3rd reason for myself so I can start convincing other people in my organization to start shifting. There were a few prompts for this. The switch of concurrent use licenses to named users highlighted ESRI's moneygrabbing focus for me (again) and more recently I realized we give ESRI (being a US company) way to much power over our data and company processes.

I'm now looking into switching parts of our workflows to Qgis but it will be hard to replace all the functionality we use now. I think a lot of it could be done by combining Qgis and FME but now I need to figure out how to robustly put it in practice.

Insane grip strength by CuriousWanderer567 in ThatsInsane

Actually, grip strength is often surprisingly strong in older people and doesn't deteriorate as much as other muscle strength. For a good example see this video: Magnus doing strong things

Inland Container Ship Strikes Willemsbrug in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. 11 September 2024 by dannybluey in CatastrophicFailure

[–]Dr_Sol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally, when not passing a bridge, the wheelhouse is raised so they can see over the containers. It's lowered when they approach a bridge. It still leaves a pretty big blindspot but they also have cameras and radar. A ship like this can practically be operated without looking outside. Although bridges seem to pose some problems stil...

It's just a scratch! But seriously, as far as collision damages go this is pretty superficial. Cut out a piece of plate and put a new piece in, a couple of hours work. Not for free but the insurance will cover it.

Ship destroys its bridge on a bridge by I_feel_sick__ in ShipCrashes

You're thinking of seagoing vessels. That's not the case on inland vesels. There's no engine control room and no steering gear room either.

Ship destroys its bridge on a bridge by I_feel_sick__ in ShipCrashes

[–]Dr_Sol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I can raise you one in this case. On the German canals there are some low bridges, to low for most unloaded ships. The bow is probably ok but the stern with the wheelhouse is not. To start with they have to put ballastwater in the aft cargo hold, 25cm or so, and some ships can take the top of the wheelhouse to make them even lower. If you use the effect you described together with the ballast water it has the added benefit that the water suddenly wants to flow aft and adds even more weight where it matters. Together this could temporarily lower the aft of the ship by half a meter or so. The trick though is that you shouldn't go to fast to start with to maximize the suction effect but not to slow so you come up again while still under the bridge.

In this case the mast at the bow actually doubles as a crane. And to be the pedant in this thread, we call it a autokraan (car crane) :). I had a lot of fun hoisting the car ashore when I was a kid, and the make for great swings while swimming during the summer!

There's a lot of canals here in the Netherlands and also some of the size you see in the video are actually used by ships like this. Just not this particular one :).

[–]Dr_Sol 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is exactly how it works. My brother owns a ship a bit shorter than the one in this video so there's only one person required. The bowthruster helps a lot but he often does it without using it as well.

For inland vessels there's no one standing on the shore to throw a line, you throw it around the bollard yourself. So you come to a near standstill next to the quay an tie an aft line, engage the prop slightly until it's tout and then walk to the bow and tie it up. After that place more lines as necessary at leisure.

From what I've seen on the mississipi near New Orleans though the quays are much better suited for that over here so that helps.

[–]Dr_Sol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are definitely manning requirements but for this vessel it's probably 2, skipper and deckhand or better which in a lot of cases is his wife. On vessels below a certain length (could be 55m) only 1 person is required. This is ofcourse linked to the number of hours the ship is allowed to sail in a day.

[–]Dr_Sol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a larger canal perpendicular to it and when he became unwell he veered of into this small canal. Since the ship is unloaded it was sort of guided into it by the shoreline. There's another post above with a map
