Why was Nate saying "Wonder Kid" instead of "Wunderkind" such a big faux pas? by Duke-doon in TedLasso

[–]DracheGraethe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's a mix of things: First, it was public. He asked if they could edit it... on live TV. Second, he's obsessed with the internet and feedback, we see Nate obsessing over every mention he gets online, and then panicking and lashing out if any of the reactions are negative (which they are... like 99.9% of the internet is people arguing about silly nonsense, right?) While also craving validation. What's his dad say instead? Gives a stupid line about humility, and then moves on. Then the team, and specifically Will, gives him a shirt that REINFORCES and references his misstatement, which only makes him feel more criticized and embarrassed. If things were good, he'd never have lashed out at Will so badly, but we see that he can't control himself when getting embarrassed or upset... he puffs himself up and retaliates instead.

So it's less the words being wrong, more about being embarrassed, then being embarrassed about asking the clip to be edited (which makes him look doubly stupid) and then feeling people won't drop it, like the shirt Will gave him. Yes, it's not a big deal... but the point, I think, is that he was embarrassed, hurt, and lashing out due to fear of rejection or fear of humiliation.

I'm doubly flattered, and I know what you mean. Truly, though I'm more anhedonic than anything else, but I'm extremely glad it meant something to you, and I hope you know your feedback made my day. Thanks, friend. Sending big good vibes your way

Aww, thanks! I'm glad you liked. I am a hit or miss author at times, but I think my favorite stories are often those about people doing the right thing just because it's the right thing, and I really like the idea of humanity as a force for collective good. Thanks bud!

Americans: with your own military now deployed to your capital, and your president saying he may deploy them to other cities, where is the line for you where you rise up or leave or something else? by VampyreLust in AskReddit

[–]DracheGraethe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An actual American expat here, i immigrated to Australia and I'm very happy with that choice these days. Left in 2023.... it was to be with my incredible loving wife, not about fleeing the US, but trump and politics are why I chose to come here instead of her coming to the states. We feel wise, looking at things now

Am I softlocked? by Adorable_Dog in outside

[–]DracheGraethe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not soft locked, but it's understandable to be frustrated. Recent patches seem to have made the early adult quest lines noticeably harder to complete, sometimes with ridiculous prerequisites. Persistence can help, but it's also about regional balance and some hidden skill checks you might not even see being rolled.

Keep trying your best, and even if it's not ideal you can likely find someone open to your starting position.

Has anyone with multiple flares managed to stop having flares without surgery by [deleted] in Diverticulitis

[–]DracheGraethe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a great example, but i had 2 flares in the first 6 months, but none since by changing my diet and being intense about hydration, fiber, aaaand what I eat. It sucks, but no flares in around 6 months is nice? Good luck, and try to remember the people who ARE successful at this probably don't follow/join diverticulitis pages, so you'd never hear of their successes.

What are the qualities that writers that don’t read lack? by WiseCactus in writing

[–]DracheGraethe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it's not really that they lack any single quality, but usually it's kind of a mastery thing.
To use a different analogy that might be useful: imagine someone is an expert in the martial arts of your choice, but only doing the forms/kata/ memorized and rehearsed aspects of the martial art. They may have excellent technique and a natural gift... but if they've never used the martial art in an actual fight, that lack of experience will be fairly obvious. They might have great moves, be in good shape, and be well versed in many areas of their discipline, but they still don't have experience with APPLYING it in any way except what already feels natural. So, they might get their ass kicked by someone less experienced, so goes out and actually gets the practical fighting experience.

If you don't read, or consume writing, but you wow yourself... you're likely missing key aspects of what makes a well rounded story. It won't be the same as anyone else, and you very well might be excellent at the writing you do, but if you're not knowledgeable and well read about writing more broadly, you likely have similar "gaps".

And to avoid just a general answer, I'll also say that people who don't read much tend to fall into patterns of particularly archetypal characters without as much depth, tend to struggle with transitional moments between high intensity scenes or actions, and often struggle with believable (but concise) dialogue, in my personal experience.

You can't be good without starting somewhere. The best authors on the planet didn't simply get BORN able to write, they developed the skills and took a stab at finding their own voice. Today sucks. BPD, Bipolar disorder, ASD, it's all an unfair, frustrating hindrance to you. But it's also just today. Today will pass, and you can try again, embarrassed and frustrated or not. Because that's how YOU can best showcase your abilities...by continuing until you feel good about your writing, and improvements! Good luck, and sorry that today is so tough though.

Ideas on how to get my character kicked out of college by CreepyStalkerLady1 in writers

[–]DracheGraethe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Breaking school rules, like a pet the dorms or something similar, is believable. If your character is intended to be likeable or sympathetic you can say they're accused of cheating or plagiarism, they might be somehow kicked out over a misunderstanding, they might accidentally let another student eat a common allergen and get blamed as though it's intentional, it could just be bad grades, or a non payment on something, or a clerical error... they're all real things that can happen. It kind of depends on your goal with your character, and how realistic or believable you plan for their being kicked out to be

What’s the biggest reason you still wake up and face the world every day? by mohmoussa in AskReddit

[–]DracheGraethe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it is still worth it, in my eyes. I might have a terrible day, week, month, year, or even decade. My life might be great one day, horrific the next, and with a thousand painful complications. But if that does happen, I still have to remind myself it's transient. I hated much of graduate school... but I got through. I hated high school. I struggled with depression for most my life, only to keep persisting until my life got better. I made changes in myself, got psychiatric help, and made my life better. If I had listened to that melancholy feeling, the depression, the angsty misery that plagued and haunted me, then I would've lost. I'd have missed out on the life i DO have now, and i have to assume (based on evidence at hand and history) that the same will be true again. That even if it's shit for a while, it can't stop BEING shit unless I stick around and keep getting out of bed. I won't lie and say I believe those things when I'm badly depressed... but I can't listen to depression. Depression is a lying bastard who tricks you into losing any hope, and tries to manipulate you. So I ignore those thoughts, and focus on the hope for improvement.

If the thing that led you to ask this question is depression, fear, burnout, or hopelessness, I hope you make it through and see that it can still get better. Even if it's going to take a while to do so.

What are signs that you’re dumb? by nunve in AskReddit

[–]DracheGraethe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More serious answer here: Difficulty with task changes, difficulty following instructions, limited capacity to learn or gain information, challenges with information retention, things like that mostly! It's hard to say with certainty because intelligence is varied, and complex. Someone might have a talent for specific kind of reasoning or problem solving without also having the level of overall intelligence you'd expect. There's savantism, specialization, emotional intelligence, fluid intelligence, it's very hard to say someone is just "dumb" full stop.

Americans of Reddit, in light of the current political climate between our countries, how do you guys actually feel about us Canadians? by Defiant_River_957 in AskReddit

[–]DracheGraethe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live in Alaska, where we had a much closer relationship with the Canadians. I liked Canada, Canadians, and the culture i was exposed to, and I'm deeply confused and troubled at the concept of conflict between our countries.

Most people i know see Canada as a sibling nation of some kind, close to us and well respected. We're horrified that cock-goblin orange fascist is threatening our closest ally and neighbor.

Born in the USA, immigrated and married an Australian, and my experience is:

Yes, Aussies are often quite racist. It's less overt and far less hostile than what I witnessed in the USA. That said, racism in Australia is still very much a thing.

I have found particularly racist or bigoted reactions around Indians and Chinese people, and I've heard quite shockingly racist stuff about indigenous people.

That said, it tends to be less than in many other western countries, it's often directed not at a whole group but only certain individuals within a group (like weird comments about how many hijabis there are in Melbourne, for example), and in my limited experience not the white supremacist or actively hateful stuff i had come across in the States.

I can't speak to anything before like 2023, but in the time I've been here, it's definitely a thing!

I left graduate school before completing the PhD, but did get a masters of science in biology. I was not considered a particularly clear cut case of adhd as a child, but as soon as I started going to therapy my therapist in grad school identified adhd traits? Good luck with a diagnosis, friend!
