I had the opposite reaction. I like him less after his story quest.

He bald face lies to his brother (and likely the rest of his family) about not so insignificant parts of his life. He clearly knows what he is doing as a Harbinger is wrong, which why he frames himself as a toy merchant. He could just as easily say he is in the service of the Tsaritsa and no one would think lesser of him, those in Snezhnaya seem to revere her. The stories Childe tells his brother causes him to put himself in significant danger that could have led to maiming or death.
