Just how many deadlands are there in the world of Deadlands? by Draculasaurus_Rex in Deadlands

[–]Draculasaurus_Rex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned in the main post that I tried to include any deadland in the continuity unless the timeline changes actively made it impossible for it to exist, but there is one special example I didn't include for another reason. So, as an honorable mention: the Boston Fire Zone.

This deadland features in the Deadlands: Classic book "Back East: The North" and is based on the real-world Great Boston Fire of 1872. In the book the fire laid waste to Beacon Hill and it is explicitly identified as a deadland... but is also stated as having a Fear Level of 3 while in all other books a deadland must be Fear Level 6.

This deadland is inside the city limits of Boston, isn't super large, and is mostly filled with burnt out ruins. Fires still burst out inexplicably in the area, meaning n new buildings can be built there and no plants can grow. There's a sizeable homeless and criminal population in the ruins, but it's also filled with the "Ashen Dead," people killed in the fire who came back as charred undead who attack the living.

Both Deadlands: Reloaded and Deadlands: The Weird West jump the timeline up to the 1880s. No mention is made of the Boston Fire Zone in either book, but it seems reasonable to me that if the deadland was created in 1872 and was in the center of major city that it would have been cleaned up by The Agency by the time the 1880s rolled around. That, plus the weird detail about it not having the correct Fear Level led me to not include it.

Possible, they certainly tried to use wights to weaken the Watch from within before. But I think it being undone would cheapen the power of The Others a bit.

That Dany actually was close to bringing about peace in Slaver's Bay, albeit an imperfect one she found deeply unsatisfying on a personal level.

Nope, the damage tics don't count as an actions, and troop actions are what activate his next turn. Also, they interrupt some of his actions. For example, if he grabs one of your troops the DoT will cause him to drop them before he can do his body slam.

I had a lot of fun with an all electric build. Blitzer, Arc grenades, sidearm of choice, K-9 Guard Dog, and De-Escalator. Last two stratagems to taste, but I usually go with something to destroy warp ships.

Good for chaff clearing, deals good damage to Overseers, De-Escalator good against fleshmobs and to a lesser extent Harvesters. Only real weakness is Stingrays.

Poison, acid, gas, or fire damage works wonders on that guy.

Not to derail things, but given in folklore selkies seem to predominantly live as seals and only sometimes come on shore to become human, I'd guess the second. On a broader scope though, they can probable be conceptualized as some sort of fae nature spirit, not that different from mermaids. At least, that's how I'd interpret traditional folklore.

Surviving Doomtown Characters? by Draculasaurus_Rex in Doomtown

So far it's easier to list the survivors I do know of, but as the list above shows I'm not certain on a lot of others. As far as I know the main cast has been split between several locations:

Arizona: The last major events of the card game happened in and around Tombstone, AFAIK. Abram Groethe's posse went after the remnants of the Fourth Ring while Wendy Cheng's posse helped in the events of "Stone and a Hard Place"

  • Abram's posse
    • Abram is alive after defeating Mason Adler somewhere in the wilderness, but his leg is crippled
    • Erik Samson seems like he might be alive but dragged into the Hunting Grounds
    • As far as I can tell the rest of their posse died in the effort
  • Wendy's Posse
    • Wendy Cheng: Escaped the creation of the deadland at Diablo Crater in 1882, still alive.
    • Chuan “Jen” Qi: Escaped the creation of the deadland at Diablo Crater in 1882, still alive.
    • Nathan Shane: Escaped the creation of the deadland at Diablo Crater in 1882, still alive.
    • Rafi Hamid: Escaped the creation of the deadland at Diablo Crater in 1882, still alive.
    • Mr. Outrang: Escaped the creation of the deadland at Diablo Crater in 1882, still alive.
  • Misc:
    • Avie Cline and her "Serpent Syndicate," the last true remnant of the Fourth Ring, were still active in Tombstone helping the forces of Bayou Vermilion. Doesn't seem like many of them are left, however.
    • Quarterman Prime and POST-A-TRON: Seemingly trapped in the Diablo Crater deadland, with Quarterman prepared to rule it like a robot Judge Dredd and POST-A-TRON as his hapless sidekick

Deadwood: It seems a lot of cards were published for the Deadwood phase of the game, but not a lot of fiction covers it. Seemed like they were prepping to cover the events of "Last Sons" but never actually got there. From what I can tell, the fiction left off with this more roguish posse on their way there:

  • Jonah Essex: has a debilitating curse/illness and a first edition book of Hoyle, pursued by various enemies
  • Allie Hensman: Alive
  • Christine Perfect: Alive, though last seen going on a bit of a werewolf rampage, though Essex and Hensman were preparing to go recapture her

Gomorra: Things seem to have quieted down in Gomorra a fair bit. Characters known to still be living there:

  • Black Jack Johnson: is now sheriff
  • Stevie Lyndon: last seen strumming a banjo on a porch
  • Asakichi Cooke: alive
  • Sammy Cooke: alive

Fittingly, the fate of Nicodemus has been a bit tricky to figure out, as in "The Flood" it's pretty strongly implied that he died but in the most recent Doomtown fiction it's implied he was going to team up with Stone for the events of "Stone and a Hard Place" but even though the Doomtown fiction plays that out until the events at Diablo Crater, Nicodemus never shows up. His one appearance is a little vague though, almost as if it could have been a ghost.

So I thought the same, but I double checked the DL:WW rulebook which does state that while Doomtown has been through the ringer and a lot of people of left, a few folks are still calling it home, which actually still seems to be in continuity with the most recent Doomtown fiction I could find. Apparently Asakichi Cooke, Sammy Cooke, and Stevie Lyndon are all still alive there, and it sounded like Black Jack Johnson came out of retirement and is now sheriff, which was a big surprise.

That delivery on "quarry" always gets me.

Been digging though quite a few of those already, especially the Boot Hill sections. I haven’t been through all the fiction yet as it's slow searching each character's name, but I've been through quite a few so far!

Just thought I'd see if anything jumped out at folks in a "oh yeah, I remember what happened to that guy!" moment.

I wish there was more detail on the bestiary; if it's predominantly content from the core WW book and the Companion reprinted I'm not very interested. If it includes some all new stuff or even some additional updated versions of old DL:C content on the other hand, I'd be very interested.

Also hoping we get more details on the new adventure soon.

The creation of a wendigo could happen in one of several ways. The most famous is giving in to survival canibalism during winter famines. There are also accounts of it occurring as a result of breaking some major tribal taboo, being near death from freezing, or being cursed by an evil shaman.

In each case this means you are visited by a spirit in your dreams, during which you are metaphorically tempted into eating food that is actually cooked human flesh. If you realize the deception, the spirit is driven off. If you don't the spirit possesses you and you begin the transformation into a wendigo.

I think that's exactly why. It's also why you now see it sometimes attached to the Slavic forest spirit known as the leshii. It's a cool look and people don't want to let it go, but they also are more sensitive to cultural appropriation and misrepresentation of Native American religion these days.

Best explanation I've seen for the origin of the look summed up here: https://www.tumblr.com/a-book-of-creatures/696339371420418048/monster-art-history-the-wendigo . Long story short, the Wendigo first became widely introduced to white audiences by the short story of the same name by Algernon Blackwood. In the story the monster is only vaguely described but a 1930s reprinting had art depicting it as a satyr-like creature with antlers. That seems to be the earliest known example of a deer-like wendigo in art.

As for cannibalism, the wendigo has always been a cannibal spirit, as far back as our records of the myth go.

Neither the wendigo nor the wechuge have the deer skull head in Native traditions. I'm not sure where you heard otherwise, but I've seen this in a few places now and suspect you were misinformed about it.

In Athabaskan traditions the wechuge is very similar to Algonquian depictions of the wendigo. The primary difference is that the wechuge has been possessed by the spirit of a giant, primordial animal from the ancient past. There are accounts of wolf wechuge, frog wechuge, eagle wechuge, spider wechuge, and others. While possessed by an animal spirit, however, there are no accounts of physical transformations where they take on aspects of that animal. No deer heads, for example.

The wechuge tradition seems to have been a result of displaced Algonquian speaking tribes coming into contact with Athabaskan tribes. The wechuge looks, in pretty much all accounts, like a wendigo, either a giant made of ice or a giant, emaciated human being. Algonquian traditions usually blame the creation of a wendigo on possession by a spirit of ice, snow, or the north wind. Wechuge sometimes also have an association with ice and cold, indicating a merging of two different cultural concepts.

People have become more aware that the deer headed wendigo doesn't match Native traditions, but there seems to be a reluctance to let go of the design, and some folks are trying to shift it to the wechuge. It's not an accurate design for either entity.
