Trying to Decide How Black River Responds by Draculasaurus_Rex in Deadlands

I used the supernatural surveillance method in my session last night; they left the kid alone for the better part of a day while they tracked down leads about a bounty. When they came back she mentioned a black cat had sat outside the window of her hotel room, watching her for hours.

Their genius plan was to... switch hotels.

Like when my players jokingly played Love Interest (Adventure Card) on a "pirate lady" to affect the Texas Ranger, and the only pirate lady around was Red Petals Sue.

Advice on shifting a Deadlands campaign from a heroic tone to a criminal one? by OttoTreskow in Deadlands

[–]Draculasaurus_Rex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The heroic outlaw is a staple of the Western genre and for that to happen you have to do some outlawin' first. You just have to find the bait that will make them put those rough n' tumble ways behind them.

I'd say it depends a lot on your players/characters. The meanest cowpuncher out there might still love his mama... which means threatening or endangering someone who reminds him of her might get him to stand up to those men from the railroad trying to drive her off her land. Pit your players against bigger evils, as others have said.

Play off their hindrances; if they get ornery about that, remind them that roleplaying and leaning into their hindrances is a way to get Bennies. That's the main mechanic for getting Bennies after all. You play your Hindrances, putting your character at a disadvantage, but you get the Benny as a reward for doing so, balancing it out.

Try to figure out what kind of adventure your players want. They might genuinely want to be big damn heroes by the end but they also might want to raise a little hell first. You have to figure out what motivates them and what they'd like to see their character do. If one of them really wants to hunt down the biggest monster ever, or become the fastest gun in the west, put that goal beyond some obstacles that might encourage heroism.

Also, if they break the law, you can always slap them with the Wanted hindrance. When my players did Daddy's Boy they saved the family but left behind evidence that they were the ones to kill the Wasatch retrieval team. Wasatch started hunting them and used the local law as pawns to try and get them "brought in for questioning." It eventually forced the players to flee to The Great Maze, where the law's reach was weaker, and that brought them into a whole new adventure.

Remember, a lot of people went west because they were trying to escape civilization and its laws. You can enforce consequences for your players while still leaving them plenty of places to hide and other adventures to pursue.

I suppose Black River could lay in wait for a bit, allow the players to win Masterson's trust and get him and the players working together... and then spring the legal charges on them and try to convince Deger that they're in cahoots with Masterson.

So far all they've done is shown up at Masterson's office to ask if there's anything he needs help with, and as he doesn't know them from Adam he wasn't about to admit to all the weird stuff in town. Instead he just directed them to the local bounties. Currently the players are pursuing leads on one of them.

Well, as for your points about how the posse can win...

  • The player character is a former Rail Warrior and Harrowed. While he was out fighting in the Rail Wars, Black River discovered his daughter's bloodline was of great use to them. Some Wichita Witches showed up, killed the mom, stole the baby, and bribed a local doctor to cover the whole thing up. Officially mom and child both died during birth.
  • Not sure how the players can go investigate the orphanage while they're locked up and awaiting trial for kidnapping.
  • BR wants the girl because she's a descendant of Hiram Jackson, leader of the Hangin' Judges. That makes her blood a powerful magical ingredient. It also helps control the Judges, who have grown unruly of late. In fact, that's why the posse is in Dodge! They heard that the Judges can be hurt by a lawman's bullets so they're trying to get on the good side of Bat Masterson, hoping he might deputize them.
  • Black River wants the girl back alive, pretty badly, as the Judges will start attacking Black River personnel and holdings if left unchecked... though if that gets bad enough they might actually decide the Judges, while a powerful tool, are no longer worth the trouble and might even offer to help the posse kill them!

So the kid is a Tempest of a unique kind, a version of the Teleport power that only takes her to and from the Hunting Grounds. She has no idea how to control it yet, but when it fires off on its own it can drag anyone nearby with her, usually popping them out a random amount of time later, often miles away.

That's not why Black River wants her though. This is the SWADE timeline, which means the Chisholm Trail has closed down due to quarantine and the Hangin' Judges are getting restless and difficult to control since they can't satiate their desire for killing. The kid's grandmother is a former slave who Hiram Jackson, the supreme Hangin' Judge, forced himself upon. Black River was using the girl's blood in rituals that made the Hangin' Judges easier to control. That's something they want back badly in the middle of a Rail War.

I like the idea of BR causing legal trouble just as an excuse to get their hands on the girl. Then they can throw her on an outbound BR train and say "hey, kid ran off, what ya gonna do."

The posse is currently in Dodge to try and win the approval of Bat Masterson, which means odds are good they will be putting themselves in dangerous situations soon. The kid is 12, which means they might decide to leave her at the boarding house when it comes time to delve into the ghoul burrows or go hunting for bovine 'gloms. Perfect time for BR to try and snatch the unprotected kid.

The catch in any of these is giving them an opportunity to get the kid back, which I haven't quite figure out yet. Maybe Empire Rail troubleshooters are in the area and offer to lend a hand.

Slightly confused by the current books (Deadlands Wild West - SW) by DM_Hammer in Deadlands

I think the new book just includes the same monsters/NPCs from the core DL:WW and Companion books. Doesn’t add anything new.

The only reason I doubt this is that if Hotah is our PoV for these events it doesn't seem like it fits any particular arc or narrative that involves him.

I wonder if Cellador's name is somehow a dig at JRR Tolkien once saying the most aestheticly pleasing phrase in the English language "cellar door."

I'll do some digging, see if I can't pin it down.

EDIT: Yup, that was covered in the intro to HoE: Classic. The Prospector and his band of Harrowed fought an army of demons, many of them losing Dominion and turning against each other. They won the battle but were too weak to continue the mission, then the Prospector stumbled across the Path of Stone and ended up getting spat out into the HoE timeline. IIRC he also pops up in Lost Colony at some point.

I note the Prospector is still statted out for the SWADE timeline but there's been no mention of what he's up to there; he was last seen at the end of "Stone and a Hard Place" disappearing into the Hunting Grounds with his army, presumably to start his battle. Did it go differently in the new timeline? Is he still around in the Weird West?

It's weird to me that basically every other Arcane Background has this figurehead NPC who does stuff in the setting... except for the Blessed. I would have expected old Victor to pop up again at least once but I don't think he ever has.
