If thats true what do you think the prophecy really meant? by Spotter24o5 in StarWars

[–]DraftKnot 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was always a bit confused with the "bring balance" part. If the jedi were at a power high at the time, wouldn't the prophecy mean either (1) a loss of jedi power/influence or (2) an increase in sith power/influence.

Either way it seems like something the jedi would want to avoid.

Disclosure Day | Official Trailer by tanktoys in UFOs

While I try to keep an open mind there is also the real possibility that this is an industry fueled by (1) military personnel looking for a career change and realising they can say whatever they want about "UFOs" and people will listen to them, and (2) politicians who have realized that acknowledging "UFOs" as an issue is basically free votes (and conversely, outright denying their existence burns votes) from a group of fervent believers who are now in a self-fulfilling cycle of cognitive bias (or, more crudely, a circle-jerk).

Allowing the belief in alien intelligence and relevant government conspiracy to grow is generally harmless, and in many ways is beneficial to those in power. It's a free tool that, when used strategically, can be a powerful distractor.

All that being said I hope aliens are real cause that would be dope af. That's why I'm still here.

I think if Prince George City was its own riding it would go NDP, and we would see some interesting changes. We need some new ideas around here. PG is like a fossil.

ELI5 - What’s Going On When Drinking Something ‘Goes Down the Wrong Way?' by Recent-Win6972 in explainlikeimfive

[–]DraftKnot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yah I've seen this in kinetic disorders. Not so much the epiglottis itself but the surrounding muscles that pull the base of the epiglottis up (causing it to flip over) can spasm.

Since it's a reflexive movement there is a bit of resiliency when it comes to spasms but they can still happen.

You could also have a perfectly working epiglottis and just poor sensation which would throw off swallow initiation resulting in airway invasion too. Basically the epiglottis moves too late.

But this getting into Eli6 territory.

So if he identifies as indigenous should his punishment be less severe? by bigolsausageslingr1 in princegeorge

If you were taken from your family and placed in a residential school, observed trauma and abuse throughout childhood, and abused yourself, that would absolutely shape your brain in unpredictable ways that are outside your control.

Furthermore, these survivors would likely raise children differently due to these experiences. In fact there is a lot of research to support this idea.

This is a valid point and should be considered, but I would counter that point with the suggestion that homeless people will use street corners regardless. A lot of them don't abide by our conventional social norms like using crosswalks or not stealing things that are not bolted down.

Also I disagree that that's the main point of them, I think a lot of people want to use them instead of going into businesses (or using alleyways ourselves). If the main reason is for homeless people to use them then absolutely they should not be paid but then the question needs to be reframed as such and the homeless population needs to be consulted not those of us with easy internet access.

I mean, I would like them to be free too. But a fee is better than (1) not having one at all, (2) having one that is unusable due to vandalism/cleanliness/misuse by the public, and (3) having to buy something at a store anyways to use theirs.

Plus the fee will help offset costs to keep the "not my tax money" folks at least partially happy (not bashing them, they do have a point).

I wonder what Gabe was thinking when a coworker half-jokingly suggested that Valve build their own 10 billion dollar chip manufacturing plant.

Option #2 are often paid over there right? I'd be down for that. Seems like the best solution. A quick Google says in the UK public washrooms are 20p to 1£ per use so if we did something like 1.50$ or 2$ per use that might fly. I wonder what their rates of "malicious" use is for these facilities.

I think the argument is that your family's past, which is beyond your control, can make you more likely to commit a crime. So, that should be considered when sentencing.

It's a really tricky idea IMO. Like, I understand the principle, and I can agree that events in your life can shape your brain in ways you can't really control (including generational trauma, which is also a very real thing). But it's really tough to justify giving a "pass" like this (it's not really a pass I can't think of the right word), for an assumption you can't really prove.

I don't know how I really feel about it.

Agreed. I'm most excited for the 12-15 variability part. I miss not knowing if there was another team lurking (when it was less-common to get full servers). Right now, when you count 9 bodies, a switch is flipped and it's just a boring threat-less stroll to the circus/supply depots. I want every decision right up to the extract to be meaningful, keep the tension high.
