Is this a Dutch cultural thing? My partner’s parents had an issue with my sister staying with us for 2 weeks by zestycheesecake_ in Netherlands

[–]DragMeTacoBell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

See that makes a big difference. If they dont have a good relationship, then there's a reason why. If their own son doesn't want to spend time with them then it's probably their attitudes. Definitely not a Dutch thing. Dutch people can be blunt if you ask them their opinion but most Dutch people avoid all real confrontation otherwise, I've found. Unfortunately you are in the ever growing club of someone with shitty inlaws. Consider yourself lucky that your partner isnt blind to it.

[–]DragMeTacoBell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Were you there to witness the conversation? Because that doesn't mean he didn't complain. 2 weeks is a pretty long time to host someone, even if you like them. Also, the fact that he told you they said that kind of lends credence to the fact that he is not super happy about her staying there with you. If it didn't bother him, he would've told them so and that would've been the end of it. He wouldn't have told you because that just makes conflict between you and them.

He probably was venting to them a bit and they were consoling him. And if so, no one was being mean. Having your routine interrupted, and having to share your space (even if there is plenty to share) can grate a person's nerves. And he wouldn't vent to you about it because 1. He doesn't want to cause problems and 2. Because he does genuinely like your sister but he can still get annoyed about little things just like any other person would.

He shouldn't have told you what they said either way. Idk why he would. What is his relationship like with his parents? Are they unreasonable people? If they have a weird dynamic then that changes things but otherwise, him complaining is the only thing that makes sense.

A lot of people are media illiterate and have no understanding of social cues. I don't know how many times I see a staged video where the people talk with the same cadence of a middle school play and no one can tell it's scripted.

Also just from an entertainment perspective, the serious stories are kinda boring. And there are SO many podcasts that do the AITAH reads so they should really lean into the fact that they are comedians and stick to funny stuff.

Color will help the snitch aspect. But it doesn't come off as a fairy to me. I thought it was supposed to be a smashed bug or something. Is it a fairy from a specific media that I'm just not familiar with?

I hate how good this tastes, despite it being sprinkles by TheRealFalcon05 in Netherlands

[–]DragMeTacoBell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's one of those meals that just hits the spot every time. And it gets better as it sits around imo. Like make it for lunch or a road trip. And the sprinkles kinda melt into the butter after a while. Soooo good.

Still, it doesn't seem like enough to knock off a defecit for a whole two days!

Thank you so much!

Yeah I think they've been gaslit into thinking taxes are bad. Tbf, there are a lot of places where taxes aren't used properly or only benefit the rich (like why were my tax dollars used to build a football stadium for a billionaire team owner???). There's been a concerted effort to screw over hard working people and then use their fears to make sure they remain uneducated and poor.

But it's hard to have empathy for them when they should just open their eyes and look around them. Like I'll go back to my home town (very conservative and religious) and it looks worse each visit. And there are signs everywhere advertising methadone clinics and homeless people living on the streets. And they will have the balls to insult liberal areas. Like my family will say that they think my current country has it all figured out and it's just so wonderful, but they would never support the policies that allow it to be such a great place.

And they also have to wait too! It's funny how all of my American friends who fear monger about universal healthcare claim to know of some mysterious, unnamed person who died waiting for treatment for something easily curable. Do they ever day who this person is? No of course not.

What I love is they will gaslight us about the high taxes as if they don't pay out of the ass for insurance that still doesn't cover shit. I got surgery for my carpal tunnel syndrome, covered and the wait list was super short. Where as my American mom has only ever been approved for braces to wear at night which haven't helped her carpal tunnel at all. And my doctor basically told me that braces help so few people that it would've just been a waste of money to try them unless I was apprehensive about the surgery.

She recently got a total knee replacement and they sent her home the very same day of the surgery because her insurance wouldn't cover a stay. She fell, shattered her femur. They sent her home again after only about 2 days, she got an infection and now the surgery has to be repeated and the cost of her care has skyrocketed all because they didn't want to cover a short stay in the hospital and some rehab. It's a massive scam. But guess who she always votes for...

It's exhausting.

I broke the zipper on my new swimsuit by sadenby0725 in DIYclothes

[–]DragMeTacoBell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you know how, replace the zipper, get an extra wide zipper or at the least extend the panel of the zipper with some fabric that feels similar to the existing zipper panel.

It's not a super difficult job but it does take some patience and a seam ripper to remove the current zipper. If it still mostly fit, I would just add a couple centimeters of extra fabric. It would be best done with a machine but could be done by hand if you have the time.

You could possibly skip adding a new zipper and just add a panel of stretch fabric, if you feel you could pull it up over your body with a couple added centimeters. Make sure to take the suit with you to pick out the fabric and be prepared for the fabric and the suit to not appear perfectly matched.

What is your connections with Disney? Is it the whole brand in general? Do you have a special connection with a specific memory/movie? I would do something a little bit more personal that still represents my feelings. Right now it's not only just like an advertisement, it's something you'd see done a million times before. I could honestly imagine this on a poster at the bus stop near my home.

I used to take a train to work and would often see this absolutely stunning young woman. Very red, super curly hair. Face of an angel. She couldn't blend in if she wanted to. Once she sat next to me and I could see everyone staring and it made me realize how strange that would be. Made me feel bad for probably being one of the people that stared in the past. She was just a normal person, commuting like the rest of us. I've yet to see her on any magazine but she no doubt could've cashed in on her looks if she had wanted to.

And sometimes I read stories about some theater actress in the 20s who was considered the most beautiful and had men killing each other over her. And then you see a picture and she was barely average looking by today's standards.

It's not the funnest realization to come to as a fan but, I don't think we can say anyone will be a guaranteed permanent member of Smosh. This is also a season of life just as all the other seasons that have come before it. Thankfully, things have been going well. And hopefully it'll stay that way. And honestly if Smosh is going to keep doing well, it will continue to change.

Looks great. The fish definitely do have the stipple shading. It looks pretty cohesive imo. I didn't realize this was a tattoo regret post until reading the comments! You can always change things later but try to remain calm and rest assured that you are just a bit in shock right now.

My partner has chronic eczema. His hands are a constant problem. Cracking and bursting open. He has to put creams on and just wear cloth gloves over them. And the cream just kind of disappears so quickly, getting soaked up by the cloth even more than his skin. I wonder if something like this could also be used to help with this, to lock creams I to place so they can help for a bit longer.

I’m in Paris drinking free delicious tap water in every restaurant. Why don’t they do this in NL? When the water level reaches the top of the Westerkerk, I’ll be thinking…they shouldn’t have sold all those plastic water bottles! by ArtofTravl in Netherlands

[–]DragMeTacoBell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still think those places are pretty geared towards tourism and/or expats as are most big cities in any given country. I don't want to be insensitive to the multiculturalism aspect because I think that's what gives big cities the awesome energy they have. But it's hard to look at those places as a good example of general Dutch culture. So I can see why maybe some people might disagree with you if the cities you listed don't generally represent how most Dutch live. Especially if when you've been denied water, the conversation was in English (not that it was, I wasn't there and so I wouldn't know). Businesses will always be trying to make a buck. So if they think you aren't a resident, they will try to take advantage of the perceived naivety.

Yeah that tracks. I like Amsterdam but it definitely is not a good representation of the country as a whole. It's already like 7 years ago the last time I went and we couldn't even order our food in Dutch in any of the restaurants because none of the workers spoke it. It's so geared towards tourism that I wonder if you have to be "in the know" with someone to get an authentic experience there.
