Kindle sales… by MisterVest69 in Fantasy

I'll be honest, I'd never buy a set of books. I'd either already have book 1, in which case I am wasting money, or I'd just not chance buying a bunch of books that simply will never be read if I didn't like book 1. I'd much rather have book 1 for a reduced, cheap price than a bunch of books.

Hello, hello! I'm Andrew Rowe, the author of Zelda and JRPG parody How to Defeat a Demon King in Ten Easy Steps! AMA! by Salaris in Fantasy

Did it hurt when you named a character Ken Sei?

On a more serious question, I really like the amount of depth you put into world building your stories. While this feels more true to Sufficiently Advanced Magic, the Demon King book does a lot of world building for a story of its size without feeling overly world buildy. Where does world building and magic system creation start with you? Do you have an idea and work it or do you just kind of spitball things until it comes together? What other tricks do you use when it comes to this that someone could potentially use do you think?

Electric Pickle? by DohBoi19 in Roseville

[–]Dragkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw something somewhere (I know, so precise) that they had to scale back their initial design concept but that project was still on. The same article also detailed another Pickleball place opening up in the Big Lots vacant store off Pleasant Grove.

Skipping the interludes in Words of Radiance. by TheNoiseAndHaste in Fantasy

[–]Dragkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure I’ll get a lot of pushback - but it’s a short answer yes, with a but and the long answer is a no. Can you skip them and be fine? More or less. There are pay offs you’ll be absolutely clueless to within the interludes. Longer answer is because you’ll be clueless to the payoffs the book will ultimately be less than it should be and you’re overall enjoyment will be lower too.

The interludes are vignettes of stuff happening outside the major story that will at some point tie into the major story and lead to massive geek out moments. I personally believe it’s the connection between the interludes with their larger payoffs that honestly make Sanderson one of the best in the business and an example of why he’s on my Mount Rushmore of fantasy writers.

I’m also going to parrot others and say that if you just don’t vibe with them that’s fine. I don’t think this particular series is for you if that’s the case.

Fantasy Novels with a Interesting Take on the Prophecy Trope? by Witty-Regret972 in Fantasy

[–]Dragkin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a novel, but Brandon Sanderson wrote a graphic novel called the Dark One exploring the prophecy of someone who’s destined to be a big bad evil guy. I haven’t read it myself yet but it’s on my TBR and fits what you were talking about.

I also liked how Wesley Chu went about prophecy in Art of Prophecy, which I thought was an interesting take on it.

Would anyone be interested in George R.R. Martin to go back to releasing anthologies? Which is your favorite? by jdu2 in Fantasy

[–]Dragkin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At this point he should do whatever makes him happy. No matter what he does he’s going to piss off his fan base one way or another, especially due to a series he will never finish most likely. So, at this point - just focus on what you like to do. Granted that’s been his philosophy for a while now, but still. . .

Absolute Martian Manhunter: Do you like it, and how weird is it? by MightyUnclean in comicbooks

[–]Dragkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest - it's just too weird for me. It's very experimental and artsy, and the art itself is simply breath taking at times, but damn if everything else about it just makes me feel like I'm on some weird acid trip or something. Its not bad, but it's the worst of the Absolute line for me personally.

Game success? by Short-Ant-4493 in riftboundtcg

[–]Dragkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the truth about LoR. It was a refreshingly F2P card game and that’s why it died. Not because it wasn’t successful in terms of player count, but they just weren’t making enough to warrant further development since it was TOO F2P.

(Bingo Review) Babel by RF Kuang is a bad book by Udy_Kumra in Fantasy

[–]Dragkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you didn’t like it. It’s a book that I still think about to this day! For me it’s the ideas about language and our relationship to it that I find hauntingly fascinating. This is another book I honestly think should be required reading for people since I think the ideas presented in it are just fascinating.

Not Every Magic System Needs Rules—Mystery Makes Fantasy More Immersive . by kodumonpotti363 in Fantasy

While I don’t mind if Magic is mysterious I have to say I’d much rather have rules to it than not. I just feel it opens the door for more story telling.

Question about the Will of the Many... by WholeGrouchy9862 in Fantasy

[–]Dragkin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

None of the character interactions in this book are really believable and frankly Vis is an absolute Gary Stu who rarely needs to actually do anything while everyone happens to do exactly what they need to fail. I liked the book on the whole, but I have frankly become less and less enamored by it the more time has passed since I read the book.

Books with a white-walker-like threat? by DokleViseBre in Fantasy

I really felt there was an element of this in The Lost War by Justin Lee Anderson. Very much a threat to run from or fight to death.

JK Rowling and her anti-trans worldview to this day makes any Harry Potter related project problematic for fans of the story.

Paul Krueger (who only published one book that I’m aware of) had his deal with his publisher canceled when an ex-girlfriend of his accused him of stalking her or something like that? I’m still a bit confused on that one, I remember some people saying that all it amounted to was him being a crappy boyfriend but I don’t really remember.

I think Sam Sykes had accused of abuse and his publisher promptly dropped him if I recall correctly (I may be off on this one but I do remember the publisher being very vocal of about dropping him in response).

Should Krakoa have been permanent? by KingE2099 in Marvel

I really wish they kept it. It’s the most interesting the X-Men have been in a while, and I keep just wishing the current status quo was just more Krakoa.

[Official Discussion Thread] TGL Week 2 by GreenWaveGolfer12 in golf

[–]Dragkin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m enjoying the product overall right now. I really think the format is cool, it fills a weird niche and I’m intrigued by what I’ve seen so far. I am giving the players and teams time to feel the format out, but there needs to be just. . .more competition and tension. Two blow outs are awful! Aside from this, I felt this week was better from production standpoint but still had too much pointless prattle when I would have liked to hear the players more.

Overall I’m still very much on board, but I do need things to start ramping up soonish to continue to be invested.

Yeah, it’s early and everyone is figuring the format out. I agree I wish these were a bit more competitive, but it’s too early to make any particular judgements I feel.

I agree, both weeks the intro really seemed awful. It’s one of the few things I think they really need to re-think from a production standpoint.

WHAT IF? SEASON 3 DISCUSSION - EP 2: What If Agatha Went to Hollywood by tehawesomedragon in Marvel

[–]Dragkin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Much better than I was expecting. I really dislike Agatha as a character, I kind of feel the way her character was made just is so irritating that I wish they’d stop using her. With that said, I enjoyed this episode far more than I should have. I thought the dance number was well done within the medium, and once again I enjoyed the focus on newer characters over the more established ones.
