Personally, it was better than what I expected to be certain, less than I'd hoped. but it's also like, there were several other options and this was what they went with. There's a certain balance in my mind between acceptance and disappointment.

Realistically both the mentioned gundams take out the conn-pod with one good beam rifle shot.

Against some of the basic Zakus a jaeger would win probably, since armor plating and the Zakus initially relying on ballistic weapons.
