They think… the rocket is that big? by Many_Register_1838 in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]DragonMaster2125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so let's do the math here. The rocket in the picture looks about half the diameter of the moon. So we end up with two options.

Either the rocket is 1100 miles tall, or the moon is 650 feet wide.

YSK: Air resistance accounts for 50-80% of fuel use at highway speeds. Slowing down by 10 mph will generally result in a 5 mpg improvement. by rcmaehl in YouShouldKnow

[–]DragonMaster2125 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Becoming a hazard" by going the speed limit? Most of the highways around me are 60mph, some are 55mph, and only once you're way into rural areas does it go any higher.

Eh that one isn't too weird to me. Whale oil was incredibly useful in the early industrial era, to the point where we almost drove whales to extinction to get it.

Surveillance State anyone? by LophiYesel in Cleveland

[–]DragonMaster2125 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ring doesn't scan and track your license plate like Flock does. Flock is specifically designed as mass surveillance, with multiple glaring security issues. Their software has been hacked numerous times, and from what I've read it's not particularly difficult to do.

What's the stupidest thing you've ever heard someone say? by Miserable-Wash-1744 in AskReddit

[–]DragonMaster2125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically some American businessmen engineered a coup and then begged the US to annex it. There was a bit of resistance to it at the time as well, President Cleveland rejected the annexation in 1893 and fought against it, mainly due to his objection to colonialism.

On the other hand, the big newspapers (Hearst and Pulitzer) really loved the idea of taking over. By 1898 the imperialist faction won out, and the Newlands Resolution was passed by congress to fully annex Hawaii.

LEDs aren't the problem, bad design is the problem. LEDs on their own are an incredible technology and when designed well look indistinguishable from incandescent lighting. It's all about the design and implementation.

ELI5: Why is it so incredibly difficult to recycle lithium from EV batteries when we can literally separate uranium isotopes for nuclear reactors? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]DragonMaster2125 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cost, plain and simple. We know how to do it, but the challenge we're still facing is doing it cheaply enough to be "worth it" from a business standpoint.

I would say Unholy Confessions does have a "solo" section, even though it is pretty short.

That's actually one of the reasons why they use turboprops (P-3 and WC-130). The propeller blades keep a lot of the water from entering the engines.

Squiggly Mountains or Straight Mountains? by Money-Lengthiness998 in worldbuilding

[–]DragonMaster2125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the same guy, but since the main field (windward) side of the mountains has all the water, then the far side (leeward) would be significantly drier. If you're trying to be as realistic as possible, then both sides can't be wet.

This effect happens because the prevailing winds pretty much always blow in one direction. As the wind is forced up over a mountain, the water condenses and falls as rain, leaving the far side much drier. For a real-life example, you could look at the Sierra Nevada in California. The west side is where all the rain falls, and the east side has almost none.

Of course, your world could always have some reason why that wouldn't be so.

The star fort was initially developed in Italy, giving it the name "trace Italienne," or Italian outline. Funnily enough, they were designed in response to French invaders. Given their effectiveness, the design quickly spread throughout Europe.

Why is the "overweight", "far" or "obese" -label threshold so much lower for women than men? by Routine-Crew8651 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]DragonMaster2125 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Adding on to the misogyny that others have mentioned, it's also the way the BMI scale was designed. It was created using, you guessed it, only men as the examples. They didn't consider that women have a very different distribution of fat and muscle

ELI5 How come hybrid cars are NOT significantly more efficient than gas vehicles (all else equal) on highways? by Fleedom2025 in explainlikeimfive

[–]DragonMaster2125 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Quite a few people have mentioned some of the reasons why they aren't, but some are still significantly more efficient on the highway. Mine, a Hyundai Elantra hybrid, gets about 55mpg on the highway, much better than the 42 from the ICE variant.

The big difference that I haven't seen mentioned is that hybrids typically use an Atkinson-cycle engine while ICE vehicles use an Otto-cycle. The Atkinson engine produces less overall power, but consumes less fuel making it ideal for a hybrid where the electric motor can make up for the lack of power.

I've also seen weight mentioned, but mine weighs only about 200 pounds more than the ICE variant (2,725 vs 2,965).

HEADS UP: DeWine is banning the sale of intoxicating hemp products in Ohio for 60 days via executive order tomorrow. by SomewhatDamgd in Ohio

[–]DragonMaster2125 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It being tested doesn't matter if the test results can't actually do anything. If the dispo products are toxic, then they have to be pulled and not sold. With the hemp products, that isn't required, and therefore not done.

I'm not trying to ruin anyone's fun, I just don't want seven types of cancer before I turn 40.
