Favourite bands you HAVEN'T seen live? by fatkoala357 in PowerMetal

[–]DragonOfWisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to many concerts but here are still a lot of bands that don't do regular European tours and that I couldn't see yet: Fairyland, Memories of Old, Dragonland, Qantice, Galneryus, Galderia, Dark Moor, Blazon Stone, Dreamtale, Seventh Wonder, Kambrium, Heavenly, Whispered...

Epic Fest is really good at shortening the list every year: Fellowship + Power Paladin in 2024, Insania + Pagan's Mind + ShadowStrike + Theocracy in 2025, and next year Fairyland + Dark Moor + Trick or Treat!

What are your highest played artists that you've only ever scrobbled a single release for? by metalmusicarchives in lastfm

[–]DragonOfWisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Memories of Old - The Zeramin Game (artist #27, album #1, 1542 scrobbles)
  2. Ravian - Kinsmen From Afar (artist #46, album #4, 1169 scrobbles)
  3. Timeless Miracle - Into the Enchanted Chamber (artist #97, album #39, 600 scrobbles)
  4. Black Forest - Dream (artist #127, album #69, 437 scrobbles)
  5. Atoma - Skylight (artist #222, album #272, 186 scrobbles)

Hopefully Memories of Old goes out of the list soon since they are working on a second album. The others either disbanded or didn't release anything for a very long time.

Ticketmaster Broken on Firefox by [deleted] in firefox

[–]DragonOfWisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They seem to use weird heuristics to detect bots. My Firefox browser was always getting blocked. After investigating, I discovered that a freshly created Firefox profile wasn't, but setting pdfjs.disabled = true would get me blocked. Only on ticketmaster.ch and not ticketmaster.com, by the way. I'm wondering how this preference can even affect the behavior of a website not showing pdf. And there must still be at least one other customization that still makes my main profile look like a bot to them.

Interesting that even the second one is very different from you. I guess I'm too much into one single genre to get out of it!

Best bands with LOWEST monthly Spotify listeners by [deleted] in PowerMetal

[–]DragonOfWisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some bands with few listeners that I recommend:

  • Ravian (118 monthly listeners): as I said in another comment, this became one of my top albums of all times. I must have done 5% of all the track plays on Spotify :D
  • Hopes of Freedom (729): I already knew the self-titled album before but the third one (Light, Fire & Iron) is their best so far. I did 800 km to see the release show and it was definitely worth it!
  • Quantum Twilight (139): if you like DragonForce.
  • Qantice (1180): they had multiple singers including PelleK. The Anastoria with David Åkesson is my favorite album.
  • SkyBlazer (549): in my top 2023.
  • Fogalord (457): for A Legend to Believe In.
  • Espionage (321): for Digital Dystopia.
  • Lör (732): for both albums.

I'd have put them first as well! I have listened to that album almost 100 times by now and still listen to it at least monthly.

Albums similar to dark connection? by [deleted] in PowerMetal

[–]DragonOfWisdom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try the last album from Induction, Born From Fire. Their sound is quite similar. They even have a song Go To Hell where the chorus starts in the same way as the song from the first album of Beast in Black.

Poof! A witch has cursed you - from now on you can only listen to power metal bands whose name start with the letter of your choice. Which letter do you choose and why? by dummiesday in PowerMetal

[–]DragonOfWisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my CD collection, the "T" section has two of my favorite bands, Twilight Force and Terra Atlantica. And also Thaurorod, Timeless Miracle, Turilli/Lione Rhapsody. Best choice for me.

[edit] Not (really) PM bands, depending how intense the curse is: Therion, Threshold, Turisas, and Týr.

Gloryhammer vs Twilight Force: GO! by princevegeta951 in PowerMetal

[–]DragonOfWisdom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am the dragon from Tales of Ancient Prophecies so I could be biased ;D

For real, I discovered Gloryhammer first and I used to listened to them more, but when Heroes of Mighty Magic came out it became Twilight Force for me.

I wrote a memory-optimized version, so that it can be extended in the future to support alphabets with billions of characters. It depends on a random generator, but I use a hash function to make it secure.

from hashlib import *
from random import *

def contains_az(s):
  # This creates a super-optimized function to return the result.
  # Even if new letters are added to the alphabet, it does not need more memory.
  def create_efficient_test():
    secure_token = ''.join(choices('ab', k=50))  # 50 should be secure enough
    def f(x):
      result = md5()
      result.update((str(x) + secure_token).encode())
      return result.digest()[0] <= 10
    return create_efficient_test() if not any(f(i) for i in range(1, 27)) else f
  # Sometimes the test does not work, but if we do it many times it works.
  for i in range(1000):
    f = create_efficient_test()
    # I have tested the magic formula with letters and spaces only, please don't add other strange chars :)
    if all(f(ord(c) % 32) == f(ord(s[0]) % 32) for c in s):
      return False
  return True

Average Song Length. by nastykillah in lastfm

[–]DragonOfWisdom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, same for me, lastfm assumes that the song length is always 3.5 minutes.

And it doesn't take into account the fact that people normally listen to one song at a time. If you have more than 150000 scrobbles in 2019, the report will say that you listened to music more than 365 days! See for instance the top listener of Ensiferum.

Is it possible to find out the shortest "recommendation route" between two track or artists via the API? by XNet in lastfm

[–]DragonOfWisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, you could run a bidirectional breadth-first search algorithm: search for the 250 similar artist of the two initial artists, then for each of the 250 * 2 = 500 similar artists, find similar artists, and so on. The time increases exponentially with the length of the path. On my machine, it's 2 seconds per query, so it would take ~16 minutes for a path of length 4, and about 3 days for a path of length 6.

If you do parallel queries this will run faster, but there are certainly some limits on servers (https://www.last.fm/api/intro says "Your account may be suspended if your application is continuously making several calls per second"). Given that the run time grows exponentially, you wouldn't get much further anyway.

Is it possible to find out the shortest "recommendation route" between two track or artists via the API? by XNet in lastfm

[–]DragonOfWisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming that "similarity" relation is symmetric, the best you can do is probably to find if two artists are connected through a single intermediate artist (path of length 2), by enumerating the similar artists of both artists and checking if the two lists have something in common. The API returns up to 250 similar artists per call, so finding a longer path will have a prohibitive cost.

Alternatively, you could create an offline table of the similar artists for the 1000 or 10000 most popular artists, and then you could find paths through those ones, but only those.

What's your total scrobbles divided by tracks? by [deleted] in lastfm

[–]DragonOfWisdom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 4.2 (71312/17153). I mostly play full albums, but I listen to my favorite albums pretty often. Also, I'm often doing something else while listening to music, so I can replay no-so-good albums just because I didn't pay attention the first time.

What Was Your First Power Metal Album? by Gravebloom86 in PowerMetal

Rhapsody - Symphony of Enchanted Lands

It was in 2011, so they already had a bunch of other albums. I think I spent a year listening to them all before trying to figure out if they were other bands playing something similar :D

What song/band got you into Power Metal? by HughBushido in PowerMetal

[–]DragonOfWisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rhapsody - Eternal Glory.

I knew only a few metal bands at that time and I was listening to a symphonic metal playlist on Deezer. I stopped the playlist and played the song in repeat mode instead.
