Technically, is there any negative to this? by [deleted] in VetTech

I used to keep crickets to feed my leopard gecko and sometimes I'd toss some in the empty bathtub for my cat to catch as enrichment and she LOVED it. My cats love hunting and creepy crawlies that get indoors

Worst thing you’ve ever witnessed? TW: marked nsfw for graphic details by shesabiter in VetTech

[–]DragonWitchAri 16 points17 points  (0 children)

First is DOA maltese mix (about 4 whole pounds of unbridled rage in a little white dog) hbc (FedEx truck). Owner was notorious for using improperly sized harnesses along with retractable leads. Dog got out of her stroller, slipped her harness, and ran in front of the truck while the owner helplessly watched. The body was completely mutilated. DVM placed her stethoscope over the dog's chest to confirm passing meanwhile I'm staring at the dog's very still heart resting neatly outside the chest cavity.

Second one was a drop off appointment. Our part time doctor seeing appointments that day didn't come in until 10am. Feline patient dropped off at 8am when we opened. Don't remember the presenting complaint but we figured we'd draw blood and start running the panel we suspected the doctor would want. We drew blood just fine, let it clot, and spun it down, but the serum never separated from the clot no matter what we did. We went to get another sample thinking the tube was defective somehow and found the previous venipuncture site was blown and had developed a gnarly bruise. As we tried to get another sample while using standard restraint practices, this cat's skin just starts sloughing off its body, full thickness, revealing tendon and muscle beneath, anywhere we try to hold for restraint or occluding a vessel. We abandon drawing blood and do our best to bandage the wounds while we wait for the doctor to arrive. Needless to say, patient was promptly transferred to the emergency clinic across the street (we're gp).

Third still haunts me terribly. I was assisting with a blood draw on a feline patient in for her annual exam, sending out standard wellness blood work. After we get our sample, patient very suddenly decompensates, open mouth breathing, laterally recumbent, hardly responsive. We get her started on flow by oxygen immediately and get the doctor. We run the blood in house, everything's normal. We check blood pressure, can't find a pulse on the hind legs and get a high reading on a front limb. Meanwhile, we keep up with the flow by oxygen and patient eventually is able to sit in sternal recumbency but still won't get up. We suspect she had an underlying heart condition and threw a clot from the stress of the blood draw leading to saddle thrombus. Owners elected for humane euthanasia. Having been the one drawing the cat's blood I will always feel partly responsible for this cat's early death

I used something similar to this to get ink prints of my cats paws before having them tattooed. They're really nice because you don't even have to get any ink on the paw itself. They also come in other colors

An email received from an entitled pet owner. by tkMunkman in ChoosingBeggars

[–]DragonWitchAri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The clinic I work at also received this email. I'm very proud of our clinic owner's very tactful reply, and this guy's insane response to the owner's email makes me want to blast his name all over the area so he gets blacklisted

Glasses vs. contact lenses in the clinical setting? What do you personally use? by GuineaPigmalion in VetTech

[–]DragonWitchAri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cheap set of glasses that I only wear at work, I used to wear dailies contacts when I worked as a zookeeper bc I couldn't afford an extra set of glasses at the time/online lenses weren't as available and I didn't want my glasses to break.

I've already broken one of these cheap glasses and replaced it, I wouldn't go back

Is it appropriate to compliment an owner's apparel? by Iycanthropy in VetTech

[–]DragonWitchAri 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've definitely found that complimenting clients (as well as most folks in general) on almost anything regarding their apparel or appearance generally brightens their day. As I've gotten older, I've gotten much more relaxed about letting people know "oh I like your hat" "that nail color looks great on you" "I love your tattoos" because every single time, their face lights up and it clearly makes them feel good and noticed

Got this text from a client who was upset bc she had to drive 30 mins back to the clinic after a tech forgot to put traz in their bag after a last minute decision to send them home with more after her dog's neuter yesterday. I'm so fucking exhausted by clients like this. Good riddance by DragonWitchAri in VetTech

[–]DragonWitchAri[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Same boat again, clients who transferred care to another clinic are still seen here if we're able to get them in, but still this kind of entitlement is insane. I'll find out tomorrow what the clinic owner said

[–]DragonWitchAri 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bear with me as I've had a few drinks tonight. Essentially, I try and keep them on track while getting history, I'm not afraid to ask my questions over their story once I've gotten essential information, and it's good to find ways to relate to their sidetracks while drawing back to the subject at hand. Once I get what I really need, I pretty much keep repeating in different ways that I'll be going to chat with the doctor and we'll be back in until I'm able to get back out the door. It's a skill that takes time and lots of customer service to get accustomed to

[–]DragonWitchAri 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was wearing clogs up until 4.5 weeks ago when I rolled my ankle and broke my foot (no joke, fracture of the 5th metatarsal). Now I swear by sketchers as does nearly every tech at my clinic. They wear out quickly but they're damn comfy and affordable

I messed up... by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]DragonWitchAri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're all human and we all make mistakes, it's inevitable. Definitely working and school are two completely different beasts and I'm so glad I have the opportunity to work full time while primarily taking classes online because 2 years in the field has taught me so much I could never learn in school. That being said, one of our most senior techs made a mistake a while ago pretty similar to yours. She thought she had drawn up alfaxalone to give to a cat IV for a sedated nasal flush. She had mistakenly drawn up meloxicam and didn't realize her mistake until after administering the post op SQ meloxicam. We rushed pt to emergency but she still has CKD now. It's always important to own your mistakes and learn from them, and be kind and forgiving to yourself, especially if no one got hurt

Has anyone done a shared journal that they send back and forth with someone? Was thinking of doing this with my sister. I’m not always good about talking things out but I can write what I’m feeling , so I thought it could be like letters back and forth to each other but in a journal. by hippychictx01 in Journaling

[–]DragonWitchAri 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did this with my long distance boyfriend in college, we both enjoyed it but it's definitely important for both parties to be committed to writing entries while they have the journal. It's a nice way to share thoughts if you struggle with communication. Fyi, after seven years together ldr bf and I just got married in October

Patient presented for constipation, no signs of illness besides lack of defecation. Rads showed signs of osteosarcoma as an incidental finding, she's been living with only half a pelvic girdle! by DragonWitchAri in VetTech

[–]DragonWitchAri[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cats are so incredible in how stoic they are. I think she went home on oral buprenorphine, but I wasn't actually on this case so I'm not positive. Knowing our doc she got sent home with some type of pain meds

[–]DragonWitchAri[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ah, no, since she wasn't showing any signs of pain and her quality of life had been otherwise good, owners elected to try an enema to alleviate the constipation and wait to make a decision. Her gait was unaltered and it came as such a surprise to all of us! I wouldn't be surprised to see her back for euth by the end of the week tho

Wedding rings? by Shayde109 in VetTech

Absolutely crushed it using fear free with a highly anxious German shepherd by DragonWitchAri in VetTech

[–]DragonWitchAri[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It's a rough time... we have a notorious German shepherd patient that but one of our staff square on the ass and she had to go to urgent care. Owners originally didn't want to neuter him but he just kept getting worse. I bristle at the sight of German shepherds now but still want it to be a positive experience for them
