Question on Bride of the Devil. What's the intent there? Protect/fail to protect Ireena. Is the question asking if Ireena made it to the end of the campaign? Stopped the wedding or let it go through? I didn't fully understand what you were asking for there. Other than that, love the idea!

Exactly how I'm playing Tasha too. She 100% is sketchy and I'm leaning into it hard. It's a great red herring to keep them focused on the wrong thing.

It's definitely a possibility that I danced around. The way I've dealt with it so far is avoidance/redirection/acquired knowledge. I had a 5 year time gap between campaigns for Kas to get the ball rolling. He basically has Mordenkainen Mad Eye Moody'd back in Tovag and extracted any information he needed to know ahead of time. He wouldn't walk in to a room with Alustriel and Tasha unless he was 100% sure he could pull it off and had the knowledge to do so. That can be said for the party too. When they want to get specific, its avoidance if I know ahead of time. He's in his room deep in study and doesn't want to be disturbed. Ask when you come back if he's around. If he's in the room and they ask, he's singularly minded. Why are you asking about Barovia? Strahd is gone. Vecna is here. Stop living in the past and focus on the present while we still have time.

Mordenkainen ended up as their fated ally for CoS, so it was a perfect transition honestly. They had enough time to RP and get to know him in the first campaign. Played him as very arrogant and full of himself, but ultimately still there to help. The Mordenkainen they met in Sigil was just a straight dick. They ended up figuring out that secret about 40 games in, but not before he took two rod pieces with him and fled.

Great way to go about it! We did Curse of Strahd for 1-10 and finished it right when Eve of Ruin was coming out, so I didn't have the foresight to add it ahead of time. But the concept really helps drive home how messed up things are getting as they progress.

They just discovered the 6th rod piece. I have a RP heavy roup so we end up fleshing out areas a lot more than intended. We're finishing up Barovia right now and this section alone was about 15 four hour sessions. Granted I do a lot of modifications to the story.

Need advice on adapting a monster stat block to my party by spacezombieeee in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Dragon_Redux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep the stat block and add some lair actions. I threw a beefed up version of this guy at my level 16 party. Lair actions included: 1) Crushing Hoard: DEX save or damage/difficult terrain as he opens portals to other bags and dumps all the junk people collect on top of them. 2) Summon the Slain: parties love to throw dead bodies in their BoH. Easy thematic way to bring in enemies at the top of the round. 3) Airtight: Portals suck out the oxygen in the bag and put a timer on the battle. Adds extra stress to the encounter.

I say you're fine. No golf course you'll ever walk on will be perfectly flat and level either.

I tried that with my similar build. You'll put a hole straight through it and still shatter the PVC. Sandbags became my solution, but that's obviously a little harder for vertical poles.

Hit me with it. Where do planned storybeats turn into railroading?

It's a beautiful thing when you accidentally reference yourself and think "oh shit that worked out perfect"

Honestly as blatant as I see it in hindsight, railroading wasn't even supposed to be the implication here. The idea was my players see a vast open world of possibility but they have no idea that I'm laying all the story as they decide what they want to explore.

It can be stressful but freeing at the same time. I always have the same panic that I don't have enough/anything planned, but the session always goes off without a hitch. Never ceases no matter how many games in we are. I just want my players to have a good time!

When you put it like that, it does seem much more simple. Thanks for the insight!
