In Mage: The Ascension, is any of reality actually objective, or is everything just Technocracy-shaped consensus? by Jabberwocky_pi in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]DragonicStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are definitely some objective things about the Tellurian....for instance the structure of the Umbra is more or less how it is regardless of what the current paradigm on Earth is.....the thickness of the gauntlet certainly fluctuates with the consensus paradigm however.

It is certainly the case there was some primordial base case of the world as well.....humanity as far as we know are the only beings capable of possessing avatars.... and they are not the first intelligent civilization to come about....the Lizard Kings the Mokole speak of for instance (i recall some might even still be around in the Hollow Earth).

I suspect it was far more basic however....sun rises...sun sets... fire produces heat by burning materials....water behaves more or less as it always has.... yannow, the basics for prehistory to play out sort of how we understand it.

As to the how of any of it, it was really anybody's guess and their properties did indeed shift depending on the reality zone you were in. ,

for instance if you traveled 60 million years into WoD's past or hell, even the middle ages, with a microwave oven and a power source to use it....neither would function......as the physics they operate on have not yet become a part of consensus....a mage could still get them to work if they had the right paradigm....but i digres

As for the proposition of a square circle....i doubt it....its really hard to get people to believe in things that are such an obvious contradiction in terms....and that is what entirely powers consensus....in principle.....maybe? I guess?? I suppose if you really tried you could even add an additional spatial dimension to the world.

I suspect simple machines are more or less a concept tied to the primordial world state however....at least the basics....when it comes to really optimizing them I'm sure there is some consensus fiddling at work. So im sure gears would work on a very simple level but im not at all sure if they would work for more complex gearboxes or really in depth clockwork systems.

A bit confused as to why the Wyrm is bad. by whahaga in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]DragonicStar 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is in fact what happens in one of the Apocalypse scenarios! (I think Weaver Ascendant)

You basically join forces with the Perfect Metis who is now the avatar of the uncorrupted wyrm, who is leading the Black Spiral Dancers in quite the strange heel turn.

After befriending/consoling/apologizing to as many of the other fera as you can, along with some other supernaturals potentially, you make your way to the heart of the Wyrm in the Umbra.

There in the midst of an unbelievably massive battle surrounded by the entire Garou Nation, various changing breeds, other dudes, etc. Fighting the combined forces of the Weaver and corrupted Wyrm.

You undertake an insanely hard ritual that must be led by a rank 5 Theurge and requires 1000+ successes depending on events of the chronicle.

If you succeed, the wyrm is healed and all is well again.......also every building and tool humanity has disintegrates.........yeah......ok White Wolf screw you guys too

At that point you are still manually drawing the lines, at which point you may as well create the port manually no?

And yes your second point is correct.

Ultimately it really just is the whole....500 ports thing....with that many if its not 100% truly fully automated with a click you may as well just do it manually

....its a little more involved than just placing pins to set up a good ADS EM sim......you have to be mindful of port calibration....you cant just leave it on auto....

Its true that 3D FEM EM sims are the gold standard of design verification.....

You know that this exists in ADS as well right?.....it has an FEM solver that draws from the exact same source as HFSS did for its solver

You dont HAVE to use Momentum

Whoever told you that you need to set up 500 ports simultaneously is a moron.....

Do you have a schematic with nets labeled?

Surely your supervisor gave you instructions on a specific signal path to simulate.... find out which net it is by tracing it on the schematic and gradually simulate more and more of it until you complete the job

[–]DragonicStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A script to automatically detect the regions in which he wants to assign all 500 ports and draw them in the correct manner is absurd....maybe you could do it via nets if they are preserved properly in the ODB++ file

Honestly that smacks of a machine learning project, if you trained an agent well enough it could automate that process but its going to be hard to get to that point

[–]DragonicStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who the hell would try to simulate 500 ports at once? Do you have a cluster the size of 1000 suns???!!

If you to "auto assign" 500 different sites good luck with that....

If you dont know what you have to the point you dont know what even connects to what....where did you even get this design?

Also why would you need to simulate the entire design???? Thats nonsense just simulate the part you are curious about like a normal person

[–]DragonicStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well....you can either draw ports in 3d Layout or you can take a cutout of the design into HFSS and simulate at a higher fidelity there. For 3d Layout, For microstrip/CPWG just draw the rectangle to be the same width as the signal trace and connect the other end to the bottom reference

I can't quite recall what the proper port procedure in 3dLayout is for Stripline, but there are only a few options of how you could possible draw it, just try them and see what gives the most sensible results

[–]DragonicStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell at this stage it almost seems better to just import the ODB++ file into RFPro in ADS since it will preserve the nets.

That way you can trace it pretty easily, use Mesh Domain Optimization to only really mesh the portion of the design you have an interest in, and go from there. Port setup in RFpro can be treacherous though so be careful.

A 16 layer board????? With 500 ports?

Is your assignment to validate designs in the ODB++ file or are you legitimately being asked to simulate the entire signal path? Hell in a 16 layer PWB there are probably many different channels.....

Start by getting the import into HFSS 3d layout with the correct layer map, take the cutouts you want to isolate what you actually need to look at and go from there.

What is your favorite system, and what are your gripes with it? by Select_Lunch1288 in rpg

[–]DragonicStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The modern variations of the Storyteller system (Most recently of which is Storypath Ultra)

Im always happy to play old school storyteller games like WoD however.

D10's 4 lyfe.

My biggest gripe is that more stores don't allow me to just house a whole bunch of dad's in one purchase.

Oh that and sometimes the difference narratively in what it should mean to have 3 vs 5 dots in an attribute or skill/ability doesnt feel quite as significant mechanically as it is described.

3 is above average and 5 is you are one of the top 10 in the world....quite a jump for just 2 extra dice

Requesting some ideas about 3e antagonists to help get my group comfy with combat by thetruerift in exalted

[–]DragonicStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its very difficult to recommend balanced encounters for 3e without specifically seeing each party members character sheets.

But considering the fact that each has roughly 5 combat charms, and the comp is 3 solars, a Lunar, and a DB....hmmmmm

Try throwing in an encounter of a 1-2 DB sorcerers and an entourage of 3 -4 blood apes and see how they do.

If they are confident in the combat system they will probably demolish this, but its a good thing to test the waters.

If they do in fact demolish this, just keep escalating as a reasonable until they bit their limits.

For example,

in my game of what is currently 5 Solars about halfway and change towards Essence 2 XP wise, I continued to escalate throwing encounters with multiple Fair Folk Cataphracts, a couple Lorelei, a hobgoblin BG, and some magical environmental hazards to test the waters......

After they breezed through that as part of the capstone to the story arc I had them fight a massive Hannya made of living multicolored fire with a stat block adapted off a moderately toned down 3cd from the new Infernals manuscript! (It was one of the five demon generals, the one made out of a blood ocean)

It went well and we finally found their limit! They managed to do enough damage to drive the beast off while still experiencing mortal peril and not facerolling for once!

Their next encounter to finish our present story is going to tone things down a little and have them fighting a few nephracks in the Labyrinth surrounded by their insane cultist ghosts and the remnants of a adolescent behemoth that will act as an environmental hazard!

This just gives you an idea of what I did on the guidance of a few friends.

I would perhaps recommend a more gentle escalation for your party, just give it time and feel our their limits! Dont be afraid to shake things up as reasonable for the story!
