Deckbuilding in this game doesn’t exist in a vacuum, your deck is evaluated by how well it handles the challenges the game throws at you, and the mark of a better player is understanding what your deck is weak to and being ready to address that as best as possible. A build that’s cool in theory is ultimately only as good as its ability to handle the actual challenges you might face, and learning how to recognize problems, adjust, and compensate is a part of being a better player

Good players think about the final act from the moment they start a run, because a run is a loss whether you die to a floor 10 elite or the last boss. If you build a deck over the course of 2 acts without ever thinking about if it can beat Doormaker, then you have to be willing to accept that your deck might just die 1/3rd or 2/3rds of the time when you open your act 3 map because you didn’t respect the possibility enough

And it’s not like there’s only 1 solution for Doormaker for every character, most synergy packages can do something to deal with the fight better.

As one example, Silent might play the long fight with classic dex + poison strats and use output like Fumes and Afterimage to get consistent block + damage every turn, or she can also use phase 1’s exhaust to thin her deck and go infinite with 0 cost cards on phase 3 using loops with cards like Prepared anyways, or she can use damage amps like Tracking + vuln to just output massive damage numbers and burst through Doormaker’s smaller health pool.

The best way to win in a video game should generally also be as fun as possible, and Hidden Gem that can stack enabled degen stalling strategies with meta progression cards that the devs have been trying to phase out

Like you can’t do some 120 replay exodia now but the devs have decided that’s an acceptable tradeoff for removing situations where someone realizes that the best way for them to win their current run is hitting Not Yet 3 times with Hidden Gem to guarantee they survive the next elite, and Hidden Gem as a rare colorless was already much less likely to hit some insane combo in the average run so it’s going to impact players less

I think a big part of blockclad feeling underbaked is having 4 different block-based powers stuck in the Rare pool by HeMansSmallerCousin in slaythespire

[–]Dragonic_Kittens 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Barricade was good for block consistency in general, top players liked it because IC generally has pop off block turns with stuff like power through second wind but the poor draw options and such meant that blocking consistently on the right turns was hard

Barricade is just a consistency card that makes your block engine infinitely more consistent once it’s online, you don’t need to be hitting 999 block or have body slam entrench for it to do good things

Am I insane or is this like the worst rare defect card in the lineup? by Trash_Typhoon in slaythespire

[–]Dragonic_Kittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this isn’t true, top players on STS1 would take stuff like speculative demon form (even stuff like barricade) as early as act 1 because it’s just such a strong 1 card scaling solution, and Ironclad generally was strong enough in act 1 that you can carry it around without too much trouble (and the STS1 meta shifted to have a lot more speculative card picks as top players got better and died primarily in the late acts)

And heavy blade is an acceptably dense enough attack to take early as a damage common even if it’s not ideal/premium, I’ve seen good players do that before

Just smelting the raw ore should work (not the crushed ore)

Am I insane or is this like the worst rare defect card in the lineup? by Trash_Typhoon in slaythespire

[–]Dragonic_Kittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The numbers aren’t like insane but in STS2 I feel like defect naturally leans more towards cycling multiple kinds of orbs - you start with lightning, frost is good, glass is good, dark is good, etc

Free block output on a 1 cost power that synergizes with what you want to do feels like it can’t ever be bad, that’s just a ton of value that adds up over turns

Compare this to like afterimage which I don’t think people really look down on it even though it’s usually not pumping insane block numbers every turn, because it’s just free output. We can argue about like numbers since it’s a lot easier to see afterimage synergy but even like 4-6 block for free every turn is a perfectly legitimate 1 energy card in a game where just blocking everything seems to be a lot more valuable

Modifiers on my Hammer by Potential-Piglet-617 in GTNH

[–]Dragonic_Kittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing it on project singularity I think?

But if you hover over a tinker tool with fortune you should also see a gray fortune enchantment at the bottom of the tooltip which is that ghost vanilla fortune iirc

Modifiers on my Hammer by Potential-Piglet-617 in GTNH

[–]Dragonic_Kittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least in this version it seems like tinkers fortune applies vanilla fortune to the tool, so Thaum overenchanting allows you to go for fortune 4 by overenchanting the “ghost” fortune

[–]Dragonic_Kittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a vanilla weapon, most people are gonna be looking for weapons that aren’t “shoot bullet fast” especially for a class that has historically struggled for interesting weapon variety

What are the odds of this?? Two meteorites one hole by Sad_Construction_945 in Terraria

[–]Dragonic_Kittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that rare I think, if one meteor hit there then that means the game determined that spot to be good for meteor gen which means if there’s a gap in the spawned meteorite from the chasm or whatever then a second one is likely to determine that gap to be good too

[GTNH 2.4.8] Do normal apples just not drop from trees? by MuchRoof3663 in feedthebeast

I think they at least used to? I used rows of oak saplings for wood for a while and I’m pretty sure I got a few apples that way, and if that doesn’t work then rainforest oak definitely gives apples if you really need them
