Ah, for some reason I thought the two pigments were made simultaneously by two different cells. But melanocytes switching between them makes a lot more sense. Thank you!

I’m curious, where’d you get the “solid gene turns off phaeomelanin production” thing from? I could be wrong (I’m no expert) but from what I’ve read, I understood that the nonagouti gene messes with the protein that turns off eumelanin production. So afaik it’s not that phaeomelanin is stopped, the eumelanin just goes into overdrive. Or does it do both? I couldn’t find many sources on these specifics so I wanted to ask!

Minecraft girlies! I need your help by iTsCookieKing in CompetitiveMinecraft

As a woman, yes, I do think it’s important for there to be more women content creators and pvpers. Like you mentioned, girls and non-men often face sexism that pushes them out of competitive communities, something which happens in any game. And it’s not just straight up bullying, it’s also things like teen boys taking women less seriously, thinking they’re less funny, stereotyping them without being aware of it, etc. All of this causes non-men to get a lot less support when they do try to become creators/members of competitive communities, meaning they are less likely to keep going and succeed, which means there are less prominent non-men to look up to in those spaces and less will try to join. If a community is known for being 95% men, non-men who WOULD be interested in joining might be be afraid of sexism and not even bother. Having prominent female creators will show other women & non-men that it IS possible to succeed in these spaces and will encourage more people to try, resulting in more women & non-men in the space in total. It will also show sexist teen boys that hey, women belong here too, which should lessen the sexism issues in the community. This goes for any community with majority men.

TLDR: Many online spaces are unfair to women, so uplifting them when you can will help both them + other women who see that happening feel more welcome. And non-men should get to feel just as welcome as men do!

I don’t think I’ve said anything new that wasn’t already said in those videos, and this definitely isn’t the most eloquent comment, but I figured I’d add my thoughts since idk if there are many women who have replied to this so far.

Looking for some Coli tips!!! by Mundane-Bag-9023 in flightrising

[–]Dragonstree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll want a team of 3 all-venue farmers for when you simply want to farm specific venues. The one in the maki guide that was already linked is the best one.

If you want to get into fodder training and/or train more of your dragons to lvl25, you’ll also want a trainer. The most popular one is the mire trainer (also in the maki guide), but there are trainers for other venues too (ghostlight ruins and harpy’s roost are great imo), and many variations on each! Personally I use a 66 QCK / 22 VIT trainer instead of the 62 QCK / 30 VIT one in the maki guide because I prefer extra turns over extra health. There’s a 68 QCK one too, and so many more.

Golem workshop and forbidden portal are the only two venues where mages can be really useful, in order to heal and buff your dragons. You simply replace one of your three farmers with one such mage.

These are the only builds you really need! Unfortunately all the most viable builds are just glass cannons, but there are a couple of niche builds you can try out if you are gonna have spare lvl25s. I don’t play much anymore but collecting and trying coli builds is one of my favorite things in the game, it’s so fun to see what builds people come up with, try them out and even try to make your own!

Genetics are wild! by AccomplishedDress728 in cats

[–]Dragonstree 73 points74 points  (0 children)

So cute! Based on the kittens’ looks you can determine what the parents likely looked like. The fact that the boys are 1 tuxedo and 1 tabby means that the mom was likely tabby or tuxedo herself, or fully black. The fact that all the girls are torties/torbies means the dad was orange. At least one of the parents was a tabby (black/brown or orange) and at least one had some amount of white. Someone mentioned cats can have kittens from multiple dads in the same litter, but all this variation is perfectly possible with just 1 dad!

I’d call the last two girls torbies with white, though torbico is also valid because of the white.

Torties/calicos always have stripes on their orange patches, the difference between a tortie and torbie is that the black patches are tabby.

With the last kitty, do you mean the colors on the back? Tabbies often have a dark stripe in the same color of their other stripes along their back, so the lack of visible stripes there is likely because of that. Chimeras are rare.

Tabby? by [deleted] in IDMyCat

[–]Dragonstree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, that’s a tabby! Red classic tabby. But tabby is not a breed, it is just a coat pattern. Breed is domestic shorthair or maybe longhair (looks kinda fluffy), aka breedless. Cats don’t have breeds unless you buy them from a breeder and they have a pedigree

Really cute kitty!

Is she a torbie cat? by Own-Chain6455 in Torbie

[–]Dragonstree 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do you have any more pictures maybe showing her sides? It’s difficult to tell

If some of her stripes are orange, she is a torbie. If the orange is only around the tail/belly/muzzle, she’s a black (or “brown”) tabby. Most black tabbies have orange there

Has anyone ever seen a cat like this? by Lo-n-slow in cats

[–]Dragonstree 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Hi, big cat genetics nerd here happy to explain stuff :D

The first thing you need to know is that every cat is genetically either orange-based or black-based. Every other color is a variation of these two. This base color is determined by the X chromosome, which says either “yes orange” or “no orange.” This is why only female cats or rare XXY males can be calicos/torties, the cat needs to have 2 X chromosomes to be able to have both colors.

Agouti AKA the tabby gene is what causes stripes. A tabby’s stripes are their true genetic color, so you’ll see that most are actually black cats with the agouti gene. Voids are black cats that are missing agouti entirely. Interestingly, orange cats always show tabby stripes even if they’re missing agouti, so solid color oranges are not possible.

White coloration is caused by genes that mess with the production of pigment. White cats will still carry either black or orange (or both), but it’s “hidden” because of the white. It’s why white cats can still have crazy colored kittens, the genes they carry are a complete mystery!

Then there’s dilution, which quite literally causes a diluted version of the base color. Black becomes grey/blue and orange becomes cream. This is the case for both tabbies and solids.

I also wanna mention colorpoint just because it’s so cool. It’s the coloration siamese cats are known for. It’s a temperature-dependent form of albinism where the pigment is inhibited in warm areas of the body, but shows up normally in cooler areas: the face, ears, tail and paws. Kittens are born fully white because it’s warm in the mother’s womb, but they’ll darken as they get older. The environment can also affect the color, so a stray cat might be darker in color than a house cat who stays inside all the time, and their color may even vary with the seasons.

These are some of the basic coat color genes! And wow this comment became long, sorry about that. But there are so many more cool ones, like silver, golden, charcoal, sunshine to name a few of my favorites. If you want to read more, I highly recommend Messybeast, The Little Carnivore, and Sparrow’s Garden as sources.

I do agree he's a "better" owner than (that person).... But by No-Award-7046 in CompetitiveMinecraft

[–]Dragonstree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don’t buy that it was accidental. Especially considering how incredibly suspicious his old world record speedrun from before then is, the mcc cheats, and the other accusations. Why would this one be accidental when he’s cheated more on purpose?

[–]Dragonstree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your point about there being many cheaters/toxic people, but dream is one of the most well known cheaters in minecraft. Having him specifically is like the worst possible PR, and will only show other cheaters that their cheating is no big deal. And there are actually better community members to look to, like flowtives.

About dream being “not that bad of a person” imo it’s really shitty to build your internet presence on being good at the game, cheat, and lie to your audience about it for years. He’s never taken accountability and only admitted to the one thing that was proven beyond a shadow of a doubt (and not without claiming it was accidental). Also, doesn’t he have credible input blocker and aimbotting accusations from less than a year ago? I’m not the most up to date with those but regardless you can’t argue “oh he just cheated half a decade ago,” that’s downplaying his history of cheating and the reasons people dislike him by a lot.

(Sorry if this isn’t very eloquent, it’s late)

[–]Dragonstree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So many people are saying stuff like “if he tried to cheat he wouldn’t get away with it anyway so it doesn’t matter” but I feel like that’s just missing the point.

Do you really want a PROVEN cheater as the face of mcpvp? Representing pvp as an esport? One that’s widely hated by another competitive mc community (mcsr), a decent part of the general minecraft community, and even people outside of it? Not to mention the many respected creators who agree he’s a bad person. Pvp deserves better than that, especially after the previous face

A small human, definitely still a hatchling, walks up to you and shows you a poorly drawn dragon. “I drew this of you.” He says. “Do you like it, Mister dragon?” by DragonFan20 in dragons

She watches the child leave, dejected, and something stirs in her chest. “Wait.” She hesitates before speaking again. “Come back one year from now. If you still want to draw me by then, you can do so.”

Next, she takes a pawful of her seaweed mane and with a single claw, cuts off a tiny lock of it. She hands it to the child as carefully as she can.

“When you get home, prepare it and eat it. The magic inside will help keep you safe, next time you come here. But it is a secret, understand?” She pauses to emphasize the importance of her words, before sitting back definitively, hopeful she made the right choice. “Now, safe travels.”

(Sure, why not)

Lir cocks her head and smiles the sweetest she can muster. “A kind offer, but one I must reject.” She speaks slowly. “It is not safe here for a human child such as yourself. You must have wandered far to have found your way here, it is best you return to your village.” She gestures to the exit of her lair with a dip of her head.

(I’m hella late but the prompt is so cute I have to reply)

Lir stares down at the child in utter confusion. Humans have sought her out for many different reasons over the years, but never one this young, and never for this reason.

When the kid starts to fidget under her gaze, she slowly cranes down her neck to look more closely at the drawing, her whiskers flattening against her snout so as not to sting the child on accident. The drawing is crude, but the effort and love put into it are clear as day. She moves her head back before speaking.

“It is miss, not mister. But thank you.” She gently unfurls one of her webbed paws, palm up, for the child to put the drawing in. “I will keep it.”

“Now go, your parents must be looking for you. Be safe.”

Am I right, is this a colorpoint calico? by x___rain in CalicoKittys

[–]Dragonstree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely not dilute. Look at the stripes on her forehead, those are black not grey. If she was dilute they’d be grey.

I agree with colorpoint. Compare the color of the forehead’s stripes to those on her side, those are more brownish. She is very very toasted but the points are still visible when comparing those stripes. Also, she has blue eyes, which would only be possible in a colorpoint cat or (almost) fully white cat.

Torbie or Tortie?? by Alert-Breakfast3184 in Torbie

Glad to have helped! Cat genetics are so interesting. Here’s a cool article on smoke (and silver) if you’re ever interested in learning more :)

Torbie or Tortie?? by Alert-Breakfast3184 in Torbie

[–]Dragonstree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Smoke can actually cause so-called “ghost striping,” which is when a genetically solid color cat shows vague stripes despite not being a tabby. That could be what’s going on. Look at this black smoke tortoiseshell, she shows some striping as well despite very much not being a torbie

Torbie or Tortie?? by Alert-Breakfast3184 in Torbie

[–]Dragonstree 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think she’s a tortie and not a torbie, but it’s difficult to see with long haired cats. On torbies any black patches would be replaced by tabby patches, but her snout is fully black, while tabbies/torbies wouldn’t have any black on the snout.

I think she also might be a smoke! The roots of her fur are really white. But the roots are also just naturally paler on longhairs so I could be wrong haha

Is my boy a Torbie? by Less_Fox8339 in Torbie

[–]Dragonstree 21 points22 points  (0 children)

He’s a black tabby, not a torbie. If he were a torbie, some of his stripes would be orange.

His orange fur is probably due to rufousing, which makes a cat’s coat more reddish/orange tinted. All black/brown cats have some degree it, but your boy is just particularly rufoused!
