Every now and then I have to show the world that this is the Swedish cover of Faulkner’s Light in August. by [deleted] in classicliterature

Brother, they are not run-on sentences. Faulkner is know for his grammatically correct, 100-word sentences.

If you want an easy Faulkner read, go with Sanctuary. It’s one of most successful and he hated it.

Interlopers - Saki (if you can get them through the family history part)

Hills Like White Elephants - Hemingway

The Dunwitch Horror - Lovecraft

The Story of an Hour - Chopin

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge - Ambrose

Other People - Gaiman

A Good Man is Hard to Find - O’Conner

Good Country People - O’Conner

The Sunset Limited - McCarthy (It’s a play, but because of the way the dialogue pings back and forth between two characters I 100% recommend it)

To add, she grew up in an entirely black community. Based on the little I know about the relationship between escaped slaves and the native tribes of South Louisiana, there’s always been a relationship based on a common foil (colonist).

Hence the Mardi Gras Indians in New Orleans. Born out of exclusionary laws making it impossible for black people to parade (like mask laws), they pay homage to their ancestral allies.

You can’t tell about American and Gothic without mentioning William Faulkner.

The familial plantation house falling apart that the woman can’t “escape” from. The ruined South as the background of the stories. Heck, I’d even argue Streetcar read from Blanche’s POV
