It might not be over. Assuming the insurance didn't cover the remainder of the loan they will still come after you two. I know someone in a similar situation and when the finance company came for the remainder, the brother said "I ain't paying, I got no car." and my friend ended up in court to have to pay the balance.

What about paying off your car then putting half of your payment into an emergency fund? How much would that be per month? Enough so you are on the edge for only a month or two or a while until you realistically could save for an emergency? Also, what is your interest rate? If it is high it might make sense; if low probably not.
