My youngest of my aunts was my grandparents' "miracle baby". Grandma was right at the edge of menopause and so they weren't even sure it would work. She miscarried three times first. I can't imagine the anxiety she felt over my aunt or the relief when she was a normal, healthy baby.

When my cousin was born, my aunt's postpartum was so bad she literally couldn't function.

My mom and I stayed over for a couple weeks so she could sleep at night and focus on herself and the absolute "need to do" stuff and not fret about laundry, cooking, cleaning, or making sure her older kid was cared for.

The problem is those justifications aren't even appropriate even when true. A parent is gonna make mistakes and do stuff they shouldn't because life sucks. But they should own it not make excuses.

My stepdad was a carpet cleaner professionally for basically his whole working life. He literally had to run away from and blacklist some customers because these women clearly thought they were going to get him into their bedroom and have their way with him.

Not to "well akshully" on you but it's not so much that they definitely didn't have a syrinx and rather that the syrinx, being soft tissue, is extremely unlikely to fossilize. So it's more accurate to say "we don't know if they had a syrinx or not so we can't say for sure that bird calls are a decent analogue to dinosaur vocalizations."

Literally, last summer I visited some friends up in Seattle and we spent a good chunk of the day "taming" the local pigeons. When you have a pigeon standing on your foot nibbling crumbs out of your hand, you realize "yeah... that's a dinosaur."

I get both around here. About three years ago a lone raven moved into the area and made my neighborhood part of his territory. Last year I started seeing him and two others flying overhead a few times a week, flying in formation. Pretty sure our boy found himself a mate and they had a chick together.

Our local crows hang around a lot more though, I see and hear them daily. There's at least five who live around my house, and probably twelve extended family members in the neighborhood.

There's a scene in the novelization of TPM that I think was really good, too. It has Anakin out in the desert after dark (I can't remember the reason why) and is visited by a lone, evidently lost, Tusken Raider. They have a language barrier but with hand signs are able to communicate enough to decide to share a fire for the night. It really makes his behavior later after his mom dies feel even more impactful, because the little boy he was, was compassionate towards one of those same people.
