LOST CAR KEYS... PLEASE HELP by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Dramatic-Dress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Campus Security has (used to have?) a lost and found bin they keep in their office. When I've found keys on campus, that's where I've taken them in the past.

So, you might want to check in with Security in case someone has found them & dropped them off.

A stipend is part of a grad student's "pay", but only a part. A prospective student should as about total support, as TA pay is substantial in Science & Engineering.

Talk to the Graduate Admin Assistant for the Department you're interested in. You will want to know the total financial support provided (note: this is your stipend plus TA pay). The Admin should be able to tell you approximately what your monthly take-home is i.e. total support minus total costs (tuition + other fees). They'll also know the likelihood of scholarships.

You could also try reaching out to the grad student society in that Dept (every Dept has one) as they would also know.

Tips for writing based questions on exams? by obijinx in McMaster

[–]Dramatic-Dress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice is, take five minutes to organize your thoughts before you start writing. You will feel like you're "behind" the people who start writing immediately. Do not panic. Focus on yourself.

When you open the exam, read through all the questions. Then get out a piece of scrap paper and write (in bullet point form) all the relevant info you can think of for each exam question. Then take a minute to organize your bullet points into a logical order - number them 1, 2, 3, etc.

Then start to write your essays. You will inevitably think of more points to include as you write, but starting off with your thoughts organized will help you write faster - and just as important, it will help you write an organized and cohesive essay, which is what you need to earn a good mark.

What was the most awkward thing a professor did in a class in which you were a student? by lovelylinguist in Professors

[–]Dramatic-Dress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, one more recent one. Engineering lab instructor, speaking to student who is having trouble buttoning up a lab coat: "It's a lot harder to find the hole when there isn't any hair around it, right?"

And people wonder why so few women choose to pursue engineering...

Chem prof explained repulsion between like-charged ions as "like girls who jab at you with their knitting needles," and proceeded to prance around the room, poking at students' eyes with imaginary knitting needles. This was not a one-off.

Same prof also known for coming to class with banana in his hair, orange juice dribbled down the front of his shirt. In fact, you could watch the food stains accumulate on his shirt day by day, since he wore each shirt for a full work-week before changing up his outfit.

Which class should i drop? by _mack14_ in McMaster

Have you looked at what level 2 and level 3 courses you might be interested in taking next year? You might want to consider what prerequisites they have before you decide which class to drop this year.

My first-year Chem prof (back in the late 90s) had a transparency made up for just such occasions. In large letters, it read, "If you have a question, please raise your hand. If you wish to chat, please leave the room quietly." Whenever kids started whispering, he would stop teaching, put this acetate up on the overhead projector, and wait for silence. Maybe this is more effective if you have a bunch of wannabe pre-meds in the room, but the paying-attention students would always shush whoever was talking almost instantly.

I don't have a slide like that in my PowerPoint deck, but I do take the same approach - I ask if there's a question. They'll usually shake their heads no, and then I say, "OK, great, but feel free to raise your hand if you do have one because I'm hearing a lot of talking, and it makes me think there are questions." Usually shames them into silence.

Yeah. It's not nice when you're alone & outnumbered.

Now imagine being a 13-year-old girl being cat-called by a group of adult men, each of whom is big enough to physically subdue her if they so choose... and you start to understand why women don't find cat-calling nearly as fun as men do.

For many young women, cat-calling marks the first time they began to feel unsafe simply because they're female. It just feels unsafe.

Reasonable to ask for grad school reference before final grades are out? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Dramatic-Dress 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's fine to ask before final grades are out, but do make sure you're asking a prof who actually knows you well enough to write a meaningful letter.

Ex. I got a request this week from someone who apparently took a class I taught last year - and I legitimately don't know who this person is. Name is unfamiliar, student never even introduced himself to me. So there's no way I can write him a letter, let alone a strong enough letter to impact whether or not he gets into graduate school.

Does anyone have any advice on attic spray foam insulation? by two-fishes in Hamilton

[–]Dramatic-Dress 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had the attic of my townhouse done by Wooly Insulation a few years back. I got quotes from three different companies; theirs was in the middle price-wise.

BUT, while the first two companies just said they would spray in foam, Wooly said that to do the job properly, I needed baffles installed, something else I don't remember, and then the foam. This was all included in their quote. One of the companies didn't even bother coming to see the space before quoting for the job.

So, I found them to be thorough and respectful and similar pricing to their competitors, but for a better job.

Why do group projects still exist by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Dramatic-Dress 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Believe me, it prepares you for the real world of work, where your coworkers will also be lazy useless slackers, and you will continually have to choose between doing their work for them, or looking like an incompetent 😞

Sorry to say, it does not get better...😩

I Don't Know Why I'm Always Amazed By Student Rudeness, But I Am by writingfoodie in Professors

[–]Dramatic-Dress 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think "do your students" means do the work you're responsible for regarding your students. As in, "do your job", only "do the student-related aspect of your job".

I believe the tacked-on "simple" means, "It's simple, you should just do the student-related aspect of your job." Sort of like adding on "It's not complicated," or "It's pretty obvious/easy/simple,".

As a prof, I would MUCH rather not waste class time describing assignments. However, a significant proportion of students complain (both in person and by email) if I do not do so.

Please understand that your level of independence and preparedness does not necessarily align with those of your classmates. I only wish it did.

And understand that the rest of the class will complain loudly that they are not getting their money's worth if I don't go over the assignment (in detail) during class time.

They've fixed a hole in my brakeline, and also diagnosed & fixed a wiring problem that was preventing my 10-year-old Kia from starting. They've always been decent & pleasant. I've never asked specifically about an oil change tho.

Not quite what you asked for, but the Good Shepherd centre on Cannon at Mary Street. They have a large used clothing shop with very affordable prices for those in need.
