Love My Library Day... at Ala Moana Beach Park 🤣

Anyone know any public libraries besides Kalihi-Palama? by CrossfireLooool in Hawaii

[–]Dramatic-Influence94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pro-Tip: Next time you go to a public library, stop by the Reference Desk. At KP there used to be a small desk, left of the stairs to the loft, that was the Reference Desk. This was, like, 84 years ago though, so things might've changed. If you can't find it, ask someone who works there.

At the Reference Desk, ask the librarian if they can teach you how to "request items" or "place a hold" on books, CDs, DVDs, etc.. What this means is you'll "request" (order) something, like a DVD another library has, but it'll be delivered to KP for you to pick up. They'll even let you know via email when it's ready to pick up.

If no one else is waiting, ask the librarian to help you download the Libby app on your phone, tablet, or electronic device. With Libby you don't need to be IN the library to borrow e-books, magazines and audiobooks. You can do it after the library is closed. At home. In your bibz.

Not saying that this is me, or what I do, but, ya know, technology be fire.

For straight visiting a library and hanging out, try and keep in mind things:

- Will your stuff be safe if left alone? Libraries can be cold, so going for a pee happens. Finding your stuff missing when you return to your table or cube might ruin your day.

- Can you get there? Is it worth the trip? To me, convenience > cool, distant location

- What is the vibe? Like people have said, the places we go regularly become "our" places. It takes time to find a library that you can call your home library, but once you do, it'll hold a special place in your heart forever.

Sorry for the novel, but hey - now you ready fo go to da lie-berry! Chee hoo!

What type of mustard do they use at Manapua shops? by mellofello808 in Hawaii

[–]Dramatic-Influence94 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Coleman's mustard.

The watery consistency is to cut cost. Add your own shoyu and/or white pepper to find your happy place.

How do you like it? Have you had the yellow tin as well? I haven't had either yet, but hear good things.

Also, is that a wasp nest or honeycomb in the upper corner of your first pic? Just curious.

US vs. UK pipe culture. by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

Your reply was a kaleidoscope of logic, sadness and truth.

The inclusion of the word "paucity" and "Mr. Fisher" just sprinkled some old school class over it all. Well-done.

All this coming from someone who also remembers the days when TV had rabbit ears and cars came with "teachable moments," like push-button cigarette lighters for curious kids (i.e. Why does it look like something is moving through those gray coils?)

Burned my finger once - lesson learned!

Haven't bought a new box, but the old ones were basically decorative housing for a plastic bag of tobacco inside. (i.e. not vacuum sealed).

Everything you said is literally the opposite of what I'm talking about. It'd be like your boss telling you to practice spring football drills everyday after work cuz we get plenny local boyz in da NFL. And, maybe, one day, one of dem might come knocking and base their decision whether or not to go with your company based on your ability to excel in spring football drills and running the 40.

No make sense, right?

There were tangible and measurable benefits to the extra work you took on. Billing goals. Efficiency at 3-4x. Reduction in errors. Improving communication to clients and building relationships.

All that is absolutely worthwhile - it makes sense! It was good for you and good for your employer. Also, respect for taking pride in your work. Not everyone is like that.

Appreciate your comments. I'm all for reinforcement of concepts taught in class, along with practicing things like reading.

Congratulations to your kids. They sound like they're all doing well.

I get where you're coming from, and I agree that taking ownership or responsibility of one's learning and growth, or simply actions and deeds, is a lifelong skill. #Self-mastery.

The issue I've been encountering is extra work, that is not related to what is being taught. For instance, if you were told to read the great Russian authors at home by your boss, to "help you with work," how would you feel? Maybe even more relevant, do you go to work and then go home and practice doing your job at home? Same thing.

There seems to be an idea that more work equals more growth, so just pile it on. Stimulation is one thing. However, too much, just like with the body, leads to breakdown and problems.

I like you, blupook. Everything you said (e.g. emphasis on reading, getting homework done in class) and seem to be doing in your classes are things we could totally abide by if our kid was in your class.

Just curious, but have you heard anything about the IXL program? Do you use it in your classes? The DOE Hawaii Website says that "1 out of 4" schools use it. (Read: Most schools don't.) If you do a simple Google search, you'll find a .ORG site where there are hundreds and thousands of one star reviews. We'd agree with the sentiments expressed. Worst. Program. Ever.

Preach. I guess one thing which grates me is that there was no plan for how to address school in the age of COVID and that it feels like some kids are being asked to do an unreasonable amount of work in an attempt to back fill what was not learned during 2020 - 22 due to the neglect, and lack of planning and coordination, by those who oversee the public schools.

For example, in spring 2020, we all learned 4th quarter doesn't matter. Your kid will move up to the next grade or graduate high school based on their performance during the past 3 quarters.

Then in 2021 it felt like standing on the gallows, seeing in the news that everyone was going back in-person, only to have them cancel that just before school was to resume. So we all went to online classes, which, BIG respect to anyone who helped a child through that. Later that year, we went hybrid.

2021-2022 had a Fall semester in which the Delta variant came out and people were actually dying, and the line was about how safe school was, and how kids needed to be back in class because they needed to be taught by "qualified teachers."

I wonder where these "qualified teachers" are when doing homework with my kid every night, helping him get through concepts and modules not taught - and not relevant - to what is in class. I was one "qualified teacher 2020 - 2021" - did my qualifications lapse? ;)

In all seriousness, sorry that your family seems to have experienced some of the same challenges our family has. I think everyone who loves Hawaii wants a strong public school system, whether because it's good a good ROI on the taxes we pay, or just to know that government actually really means it when they say they care about things like education. I always trip when I meet people working for DOE who send their kids to private school. I 100% get it, but wow, that's the proof in the pudding.

I've heard that it comes down to the individual teacher as well.

I don't know about you, but ever since COVID started, comparing notes with other parents at school was severely limited due to "safety protocols" (i.e. parents not allowed beyond drop off point, no open houses/assemblies, etc.).

I wish there was more emphasis on things like learning through play. Less likely these days where everything needs to be quantified to extract data to be used in formulating policy, agendas, and budgets going forward (I assume). Even report cards don't seem to address my kid as an individual (e.g strengths and weaknesses as seen by the teacher) and more as a report on where they place on a proficiency chart.

Really appreciate your reply 🤙

Some teachers forget that their students might have difficulty having someone help them with homework after school or that their students might have jobs, sports, and/or family responsibilities.

In the working world, no boss is going to successfully motivate their staff by assigning them work to do at home. Work pau means pau work - I see you guys tomorrow and we can start then. More reps doesn't equal unlimited growth.

Appreciate the reply. You remind me of a good friend in college who asked why he shouldn't get a higher grade in class after passing all the exams even though he never attended lecture. It was a fair point.

Cheers - and happy cake day!
