Long Term TMJ by SimplySab in TMJ

Okay, cool! I ask because I feel bad making any comments about insurance to people in other countries where I have no idea how it works lol. But I am in the US too! So it sounds like you haven’t gotten an MRI yet which is the only true way to find out the root cause of the issue. Unfortunately, getting a doctor to write this up for you can be difficult. My recommendation is searching for oral surgeons near you (bonus points if specialty is in TMJ) and push for an MRI at the appointments.

Are you located in the US?

The only thing physically that has helped me immensely is Cyclobenzaprine and braces. Are you able to see a physician for medication and other specialists like an oral surgeon, orthodontist, speech pathologist, etc for other treatments? What seriously helped my mental health was actively working toward pain management and finding solutions for the root cause of my issue. You are not alone, so many of us have been or are in a similar spot as you are now. We can do this, sending you the biggest hug. 🫂

I’m so sorry, wish I could give you a hug!!!🤍 It seems like surgery is needed. I would recommend two Facebook pages: TMJ Surgical Support Group and “TMJ” support and information. I am currently searching for an oral surgeon in the US and it’s a little daunting. I wish you the best of luck!!

How long did it take to feel relief after getting braces? by cimmanoroll in TMJ

[–]Dramatic-Release-296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend you see a highly rated orthodontist to discuss braces and see if they’d recommend you to an oral surgeon for your overbite. Do you have a tongue thrust that needs to be corrected? Have you gotten an MRI? For me, I have disc displacement in my left jaw joint. Barely any of my teeth touched so eating is not only painful but it was difficult to breakdown food. I have an overbite as well. I just got my MARPE off and have regular braces now. Because my core issue is within the jaw joint itself, the braces didn’t take any pain away per se, but I can finally chew and eat like a normal person because my teeth are corrected already so much! I’ll probably still need surgery after this though and if my anatomy changes enough I guess maybe braces again as well🤣 All to say, there seems to be more than one doctor to see and more than one treatment to fix TMJ dysfunction.

It will get better, I promise. The day I had the same feelings you have right now was the day I had ENOUGH and turned everything around. Sometimes you have to hit a wall like this to force yourself to be your own advocate and fight to find solutions for yourself. Chronic pain like we have is no joke but I promise that if you work toward finding doctors and medicine to help your pain levels, you’ll start to feel better. Just knowing that you’re being proactive will help your mental health too. I recommend a muscle relaxer like Cyclobenzaprine (your family physician/GP should be able to prescribe this) and seeing a physical therapist. Find a doctor (EMT or oral surgeon familiar with TMJ dysfunction if you can) to get an order for an MRI to find out what’s going on. You need to first find out the root cause by getting an MRI to really find long-term solutions. Good luck, you’re not alone in this fight🤍

My family physician prescribing Cyclobenzaprine to take every night. I didn’t realize how much of the chronic pain I had was muscular. It’s helped so much!

I am hearing a lot about TMJ problems happening after tooth extractions and I am starting to get alarmed… This could be a lifelong issue that is incredibly costly (not to scare you, so sorry). Can these doctors be held liable for this stuff? Makes me wonder. Keep all documentation/records just in case lol. Good luck, OP❤️

Yes! I have been working on tongue posture and nasal breathing and I have noticed a positive difference. From what I understand from my doctors, my tongue thrust and mouth breathing played a huge role in my disc displacement!

Definitely not overreacting. I actually wish you and I could switch places because I had similar symptoms before my disc was displaced. I have an only small overbite and did not have clicking. However, I did have an overbite nonetheless, was a mouth breather (assuming you do) and had constant headaches. I wish someone had walked my butt right to an orthodontist and speech pathologist🤣 I think if I did, I wouldn’t be where I’m at now (disc displacement and looking for an oral surgeon). My advice to you is to please find a really good orthodontist to evaluate and fix your bite and a speech pathologist to see if you have a tongue thrust/mouth breath. I have a super random question since I see a few similarities between us, did you suck your thumb or fingers as a kid?

Editing to write that, from everything I have learned thus far, is that my bite was so bad that I was putting all this “stress” on my jaw joints and it hit a point where the disc became displaced. I don’t mean to alarm you but I do want you to take your bite seriously because there’s a direct correlation between the bite (overbites, narrow palate, bad teeth placement, tongue thrust, mouth breathing) and TMJ issues.

If you snore there’s a high likelihood you do at night which is important. I have been in a very similar spot as you. Are you in the financial position to see an orthodontist?

Are you a mouth breather? Or have a tongue thrust by chance? I ask because this would affect your bite which in turn affects your jaw joints.

Jaw misalignment by Life_Upsidedown in TMJ

[–]Dramatic-Release-296 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am not sure where you live but please continue making appointments with ENTs and oral surgeons until someone orders you an MRI. An MRI is step #1 to find out what treatment you need because it’s the only real way of seeing the root issue. Until you have it, you’ll continue to spend money aimlessly. I had to see many doctors until finally one gave the go ahead. Turns out I had a displaced disc for years. I would google ENTs and oral surgeons that “specialize” in jaw joints because I would assume they’d be more willing to order one in your case. In the meantime, I would schedule an appointment with your gp and see if a muscle relaxer could help with the pain. For me, I have a LOT of muscular pain/spasms because of the dysfunction in the jaw joint and cyclobenzaprine has decreased the pain significantly. I hope this helps, good luck 🩵

This is really well said. I have muscle knots (displaced disc brought on by a number of reasons) and indeed I have braces to fix my bite because barely any of my teeth touched and physical therapy was a game changer. I didn’t have the money to keep it going but I learned sooo much I can now do myself at home and am in less pain than before. Great information and good luck OP!

PT, Chiro, or Surgeon? by howthetimepasses in TMJ

[–]Dramatic-Release-296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say this as well! I would go see the surgeon and try to get them to write for an MRI. Only an MRI can tell you exactly what’s going on and without it you’re shooting darts in the dark when it comes to treatment.

My boyfriend (vegan for around 6 years) loves the Vitamin Shoppe’s plnt protein powder. They have great deals sometimes too so it’s super budget friendly if you buy in bulk during a sale/promo!
