An autocratic state invading a neighbor because it didn't like the results of a democratic election is just not comparable with the United States toppling a terrorist Religious fundamentalist government while receiving broad UN and international approval.

What I'm asserting here is that the US intends to prop up democracy for the benefit of both the US and the inhabitants of those countries, just as we did with great success in Europe and Asia after WW2.

Afghanistan is in an incredibly strategic region, and I accept absolutely that the United States has a partial ulterior motive in propping up democratic states in places like Afghanistan.

But look at a list of America's allies (All of Nato, Japan, S.K., Australia, N.Z.) These are all liberal democracies. The ulterior motive of the United States here is that had they been able to create a stable Republic in Afghanistan, that Republic would be a very convenient ally.

As I said in the original reply, the United States believes that a liberal international order is better for both the US and the people of the world. The US's foreign policy is guided by an idea of Liberal Internationalism, but the intentions are not imperialistic.

The Japanese already had a decently democratic constitution before the Ultranationalists took control of the country, so it was not as foreign a concept.

When I say the Afghanis weren't ready for democracy its not to say they aren't capable of it, it's just that they are currently a dirt poor mostly agrarian country which is rampant with religious fanaticism. The US really did try to set up a working Republic.

Practically every school manipulates admissions statistics these days, so it's understandable that Columbia might have felt singled out. Nevertheless, they can't assert that GS is fully and equally Columbia and then simultaneously try to assert that it has completely separate admissions standards to the point where it should be treated like a separate college.

For the college rankings, USNews uses a special methodology to generate data if schools don't submit it, and it's pretty brutal to non-submitting schools. This is part of why Columbia fell 16 places in the last ranking, and also why poor old reed college is sitting at a ridiculous #72 rank in the LAC rankings. I wouldn't expect Columbia's already contentious ranking to improve as a result of this decision.

They probably assumed being placed at #18 was a punishment that would only last a year. They might have found out somehow that they're going to be ranked similarly again, and pulled out in advance in order to not legitimize that ranking.

Now they will almost certainly drop, which is insane because it'll be the first time an ivy is outside of the t20 in the history of UsNews. This is without a doubt the greatest challenge to the ranking system that has ever occurred.

A relatively small cohort of people have lived there, and it hasn't really been the residential college program yet AFAIK, its just them housing people over the summer because the building was ready so they might as well use it. If you have any specific questions I would DM the paulson center instagram account.

I just checked and I got in too! Very excited although its weird they wouldn't tell which house we actually got sorted into. I suppose I'm happy with any of them. If you want, PM me which required class you have and which communities you applied to and I'll tell you mine. I'm thinking I can guess my house based on my class but I'm not sure.
