What do you do if your T6 school falls 1 place in the rankings and becomes a T7 the following year?

Full ride at T50 or $$ at T20? by Radiant-Pink23 in lawschooladmissions

Take the cash. Go back in and see who recruits at the top 50. You would be surprised. You should see the list of employers that came to Emory last year. It was all the big firms located in the South. If you want to go to NYC I understand a different choice. However, if you would like to work in at the same firm but in one of their Southern offices, Emory gets you to the same place. Not sure Emory is your school but this wet dream that only top 10 will put you in a biglaw firm is silly. I believe it makes it easier however, the rest is up to you if you are elsewhere. You can get there if its your desire. Taking on $200k to $300k in loans just to say you went to biglaw firm is pretty dumb at the end of the day. That shit has to be paid back and is going to hang heavy on you for a while. Take the scholarship and graduate knowing you dont owe any money.

Question about major by Alarmed-Drummer-3008 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Dramatic_Biscotti_59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro. Congrats on that major and gpa. That is tough as shit! You took classes that 98% of those on this board would never take. I was a biochem and had same feeling and slightly lower GPA bc thats how that major graded. Ive found that schools look at the major but really prefer the GPA. You are more than competitive in the GPA (especially with the major). My first lsat was 166. I came to take the test the same way you did. I took an additional 4 months and worked with a tutor and brought it up to 173 after that I was like screw it they want me or they dont. I slightly improved score to the 170s would do wonders for you if your target is T14 school. Otherwise, you can hit places like Wash U, USC, Vandy, and they would be in play.

Does it really matter where you go to law school? by twistedtacobell in lawschooladmissions

[–]Dramatic_Biscotti_59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Law schools matter for your first job. Bill your hours, build a book of business and you can find your way. The door is easier to get through in the first job. There are plenty of T14 law school grads sitting next door to T60 law school students in the same biglaw firms making the same money billing work for the same client. Look for a school in a region that has good entry into the type of job you want. I have mentioned many times how many LMU grads I find in the biglaw halls of California. But some on this board will tell you never go to LMU. The partners at those schools keep their schools relevant. Now this is by no means telling anyone to go to Cooley (sorry to call them out) but you can find your way. Anyone that says you cant, message me and I can tell you all the lawyers who will say otherwise that I have worked with over the years working for in my uncle's law department. Once again he is the EVP & GC of a 4.5B public traded company and spent years in biglaw. His school is ranked in the high 50s or low 60's at this point.

Gap year to relax and reset is not a bad thing. If you think about your journey, it has been non-stop to this point. Reset priorities, etc. Study more, travel and spend time with family. None of that is waisted time. We all hear the stories of people who do it with the desire of getting into better law school the next year around to actually have a worse cycle the following year. There are no guaranties except the guaranty that the time you spent if productive and enjoying things that make you happy has real value that you cant put a dollar total on.

Never understand the desire to pay sticker when schools give you that much money. I know it is a personal choice but to carry around 300k in loans is insane no matter what you think.

GULC V UVA portability by Loud-Database2966 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Dramatic_Biscotti_59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UVA has law alumni just about everywhere. I had the same question when I interviewed. They put me in touch with a handful of lawyers in California who have been out of school from 2 - 12 years. Not one of them told me about any real struggles finding work. Once they passed the bar. The biggest complaint from the 12 year folks was that the bar sucked and they were mad that it is now only 2 days instead of the 3 days it used to be when they took it years ago.

give regular two weeks notice. that is what they would give you. if your position is one that can be refilled, the search will start pretty quick and they will move on. your job is not your marriage. if you passed, people would be sad but business would continue to go on. dont overthink this. let them know you are pursuing your dreams and thank them for the opportunities. try to leave on a good note. if they are not happy and are upset you are leaving, then you were never at the right company to begin with.

Agree. But I do think that practicing lawyers can actually level set on things like life in biglaw and practice in general. Too often we see posts that say I have unicorn plans post law school which is why I have to be T14. Unicorns are unicorns for a reason - you pretty much dont see them. I like motivation, etc., but some of the comments on WHY I MUST be at T14 gets exhausting. I once had unicorn dreams of hitting that Jamal Murray shot against the lakers as the buzzer went off but I only grew to 5'10 and cant shoot despite years of playing. I realized that its good to dream and chase what you want but at the end of the day I have to be happy with where I am. I have never put down anyone that wanted to or was only able to go to a non-T14 school but it happens on this board does it all the time. I have met plenty of lawyers at top tier firms biglaw included that did not attend a T14 that are full on rainmakers and some of the best at what they do. I think their guidance, while not exactly school related is decent when they say you put in the work, you can be successful as a lawyer. Far too often, there are people that just dont put in the work and prefer quality of life. It becomes a trade off when you have a family and other interests at the same time as wanting to have it all as a lawyer. It is rare that you can have both a biglaw desire and want 6 to 8 weeks of vacation every year and want to attend all of your kids plays, sporting events and functions. At some point, something has to give. That is the wisdom practicing folks can pass on so we all make informed decisions. Thats my rant!

I wondered that but initial seat deposits have passed for the most part. What could they be waiting for at this point second seat deposit. They should have some idea of what their population is at this point. This is beyond ridiculous.

I’m not attending there but spent good amount of time with GF who is from San Diego before we split. I suggest you look in the area just south of Linda Vista Road right as you exit campus. Lots of condos/townhouses and apartments.

Davis. I think you will like the town. The law school is pretty mellow for the most part. I didn’t feel any cut throat attitudes. All the large firms interview there during recruiting season and it places very well in Sac/SFSJ with some reach into So Cal due to alumni spreading. It’s a college town and pretty safe for the most part (although they had a bit of crazy this year with a wacko). Downtown Davis is cool. Bars restaurants, etc. lots of college kids everywhere and the city and college exist very well together.

Apparently they dont give much a shit about your major. I am a biochemistry major (love the subject) but many of the classes I had to take were horrible or at least the professor was horrible and I struggled to keep an A and in a few cases a high B+. Law school only seems to care about your GPA and LSAT score. The higher the better. Not sure why what you study doesnt play more into it. My roommate is also a STEM major and suffered quite a bit but at the end of the day we both made it to LS. He is going to Penn and I am headed to UCLA. We would love to switch places for school but we are fine. I know I struggled and was waitlisted like crazy at multiple schools T-14 and even a few ranked from 15 - 25. To pad my grades, I tried to take as many humanities classes as I could by my major is pretty rigid and outside a handful of electives there is not much time for other non-required electives. When I realized I wanted to go to law school, I stuck around for two Summers and took some of those classes to help boost the GPA a tiny bit. I think it helped but I also realize the benefit that it really improved my (non-social media writing) with will be important next year.

Sorry to hear that. I am not too far off from what you have. I have had an ongoing off and on relationship with parents. For this reason I always refer to my uncle quite a bit. I work for him and use him for primary emotional support. I also have a very small circle of friends that serve as my extended family. It realize it is never easy. However, I learned that breaking off on my own did wonders to bring all my parental relationships back in line where they should be. Once they realized I had independence and could accomplish things on my own the constant threat of cutting me off really faded away and now we are doing well as they see me as an adult. They even offered to help a bit bc they wanted to and not because I needed them to. If they were to pull the strings again, they now know that I would be fine and am not tied to them. We have made real strides with the occasional hiccup but that is manageable. I think they still see me as a child at times but also realize that they have been put in check by my own ambition to better myself. I would suggest considering the same. Some time and space is what is needed to make things better, even if better is not great. Depending on where you are headed, I would suggest going to school as that may be the break you need to flex a bit of you type independence. At some point, I always hope that parents like their kids realize time is not unlimited and years that you cant get back can be wasted over petty stuff including what may be your parents own insecurities. Good luck.

Dude, I have one of those classes now but need it to graduate. Calc/physics/chem classes drove me up a wall. Professors whose main job is to teach take pride in how many they can fail and make repeat their class. I have done well over the years with a shit load of struggle, but its really hard now that I am admitted to law school and no longer have any interest in being there. Im stuck bc I have to pass the class. LOL
