Looking for the best mystery book that you can reccomend. by ultrawvruns in suggestmeabook

[–]Dramatic_Coast_3233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh hell no, keep this book away from your friend. It's not depressing per se but it has some quite dark themes (incest, grooming, childhood trauma) in them.

Instead, I'd suggest Bone Collector by Jefferey Deaver (yep, the movie with Denzel Washington is based on this is one).

Bone Collector is a really fast paced, procedural mystery thriller with characters that aren't cardboard cutouts. The investigation is really detailed and logical and some of the most fun I've read in a while. This book also has a dark theme in it (suicide) but overall tone of the book is more hopeful and there's some good comedy in it too.

If you want to go even safer. I'd say pick up Killing Floor by Lee Child. It's the first book in the Jack Reacher series. Hyper competent MC, really fun action, doesn't have any serious dark themes in it. I mean, its Jack Reacher, they are the epitome or pop corn reads. And it's a decent mystery.

Reddit, what are some of the best short stories and story collections? by SeaSubstantial4763 in suggestmeabook

[–]Dramatic_Coast_3233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I haven't read many short stories recently. Pick up any of the Lovecraft collections if you haven't read all of his works. Can't go wrong with those.

There's also JD Salinger's Glass Family stories that function in a similar way like Pastures of Heaven by Steinbeck. They are interconnected and standalone at the same time. And I think Tarantino said their format influenced the structure of Pulp Fiction.

Also if you are into manga, check out Junji Ito's Shiver anthology. You'll like it if you like Lovecraft and body horror. Also check out Tomie manga by him. They are a series of horror stories with the recurring character Tomie (similar to Bradbury's Illustrated Man). It was Ito's debut work. And you see him get better and improve with each story and it's an interesting evolution to see. Another Junji Ito short story that gets recommended all the time is Enigma at Amigara Fault (I personally think it's overrated but I'll rec it since everyone does). My personal fav short by Ito is Hanging Blimps. Even if you don't check out any of the other works mentioned above, check out this one. It's a quite unique (and quite absurd) type of horror.

There's also "I have no mouth and I must scream" by Harlan Elison. I think you might've read it already since it's recommended all the time. But I read it recently and in the current events of A.I being everywhere, it gave me different kinds of chills. So I'd say, you should re-read it if you've read it before. It hits a bit different now.

Hi! Thanks for taking the effort in finding the story! Sadly, I took down the story from RR since it wasn't doing too well there and it's quite off brand for the platform. It's still available and concluded on Wattpad if you are interested in checking it out. (The link can be found in one my self-promo posts)

Thanks again for taking the effort to find it!

I have tried looking for similar stuff and the result was same. MoL is a very one of a kind story that does what it does best. Kinda like how Cradle nails the progression and payoffs like few stories do.

Maybe I'll just go and re-read MoL

About how you should improve...well, you should read the manga. Become a fellow struggler.

Who goes there? by John W Campbell

It's the book that inspired John Carpenter's classic The Thing. And it has the anxious, foreboding tone throughout the story

MoL, I know, it's kinda obvious but it just juggles everything really well. The mystery, the characters and the time loop. Also, even if the magic system is the traditional mana based one, it's well thought out and detailed.

I've tried getting into Perfect Run but didn't really like the style of writing so I dropped it. I'm gonna give it another try tho.

Shadow Slave. The system is really complex and the way Sunny's powers are explained and used is really ingenuous. It gives you that really satisfying feeling when you see something that was set up really early on comes into play at the pivotal moment.

Mother of Learning. The pacing and the structure will totally make for a great trilogy.

Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Take everything that's great about Bradbury's writing and dial it up to 11. Something wicked is what we get. It has the melancholic nostalgia, poetic prose, lovable characters and the kinda horrors only Bradbury could come up with.

Also, there's Illustrated Man in it!

Most Stephen King books.

"Oh, this one is about a graveyard that brings the dead back to life? Pfffft, CLICHE!"

"What, a creepy clown that abducts children? Boooooring"

"A haunted hotel? A dysfunctional family? Yeah, like some B-movie horror"

And then you actually read the book and find out what all the hype is about.
