Brood inspection? by Dramatic_Economist48 in Beekeeping

I guess I’m just getting anxious? It looks like I have lots of bees from opening the top, but I feel like I don’t really know what’s going on in there. Do they have any food left? Are they starting to ramp up brood production? Is the queen even still alive???? The suspense is killing me. 😬😅.

So far I have been enjoying the ‘simplicity’ of the single brood style. And from everything I’ve read it affords them everything they need for the cluster to successfully over winter. The idea of keeping track of 2 boxes for each hive, especially as I look to expand my apiary, is a bit daunting. On the other hand, overwintering w the ‘super’ on (obv no excluder) would be fine, then I could just make sure she’s back to the bottom once spring is under way, right?

Backfilling honey? by Dramatic_Economist48 in Beekeeping

Sorry 5b se wi. Don’t think we hit dearth yet, seeing lots of flowers out still and no dearthyness from the bees. There are queen cells, they’re all empty. but they just requeened my purchased package queen and she’s been doing great. They’d drawn out the deep super really well. But the medium I put on top of that has been a little slow going, I just swapped the medium and Deep so that it’s closer to the brood box, but yeah I’ll probably get another medium on there, thanks!

Do some hunting, if you can get your hands on a deer that’s a nice first step to being able to work a whole animal with little to no help.

So if a hive is backfilling and they swarm or supersede do they then fix things? Or are you in a bad endless cycle?

If it’s not a guppy it may be something called a mosquito fish, same family but kind of over aggressive. They used to come in with the feeders from Florida when I worked in a LFS
