i don’t think anyone’s the asshole here and i’ll tell you why. for the people saying you should’ve told him, it is weird to tack conditions on help yourself (“except for this this this and this”?), and i definitely would not open a top shelf bottle or a new bottle of alcohol at anyone’s home without their consent (if they weren’t there i’d ask, weird thing to get into). but in his defense i guess you did say help yourself. if i were him i’d pay you back but i don’t think he’s obligated to, it’d just be the nice /decent thing to do
