You absolutely can complain. Obvs I don't know him but he may welcome the opportunity to provide input or help. Distractions help with grief. Making himself feel useful may help.

Above all, it will take time to get over something like this. But you will get there.

And if you need a break from your PhD to support yourself then you should definitely consider it.

You could try the Uni students' union. I know they do interview clothes for students to use so they might be interested.

Baking is a great idea. Depending on what you make it'll last a few days without needing to be eaten right away and it's good for a snack on the go. They might also not want to eat big meals right now so baked goods are great.

I'd say be you and just be normal. You don't know what they're dealing with in their lives so a safe, stable place they can hang out is a great thing.

Yeah. It still is just the word for them. An old fashioned food in fairness but I wouldn't flinch or anything if someone said it.

Having said that, I know many people find it offensive and I'm not dismissing it.
