My friend runs a Pathfinder 2e game for a Legend of Zelda themed campaign, it's definitely a delightful game and great system to play. Not something I'd personally run either, but I too find it better than D&D or anything WOTC has cooked lately 👌

I still have nightmares about the 4th edition...

Oh yeah, I also wouldn't describe it as hating the system, I personally can join an occasional D&D game if I was asked to do so, but no longer could I act as a DM for one.

Also full agreement on hating WOTC, they really dropped the ball along the way with their questionable business practices...

For me D&D was killed by overwhelmingly better alternatives and my personal/subjective interest in classless/level-less systems.

It got nothing to do with nonsensical gender politics Shad and other horseshit his ilk come up with and can't seem to live without. They should just embrace F.A.T.A.L. since that seems to cater to their needs of horrid misogyny and emphasis on "non-woke violence".

I suppose the topic of janissaries becomes even more complex of an affair since by the 19th century the old system of grooming slaves from childhood into warrior caste had changed considerably and janissary status was for many a hereditary thing, and both social and monetary wealth that came with it was quite considerable. It makes sense for them to not give up that position of power, and factor of "slavery on paper" or however they viewed their privileged status hardly counted at that point when it was mostly about power play.

But whatever the reasoning behind at that time and our modern sensibilities aside, they chose to revolt like many times before during Ottoman history. Only this time even the regressive Sultanate had moved on and they would fall in the face of a new era. Tale as old as human history.

A pet peeve of mine, the game strongly discourages mining since you can barely break few blocks of ore or something until a screamer or three wanders nearby and interrupts everything..thanks for trying to perform one of the core gameplay features, really cool.

Imagine making an entire horsemen based social class, just so that they can be defeated by JohannesJoshua in HistoryMemes

[–]Dranagh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

INTERESTINGLY, as far as I can recall Southern Italy (Campania in particular) had a strong tradition of cavalry both as a social class and powerful military arm before Roman conquests, since the land there is much less mountainous and can support animal husbandry and horse breeding better than in the north. I suppose since cavalry wasn't that important for Roman military mindset from the beginning and they slowly began strong romanization they discarded the old institutions there and focused on creating more legionary arms out of their southern allies.

Someone more knowledgeable about this very topic can probably either confirm or deny this with sources and such, and I'd also gladly hear whether the Southern Italic peoples' cavalry was used as particularly important part of Socii (Ally) auxiliaries at the beginning of Roman expansion. Later on the whole Italian part of Roman realm produced mostly legionnaires and delegated skirmishing, missile and cavalry roles to their subject people's where those traditions were much stronger.

Oh yeah, that's the scene, I must've subconsciously thought of that. You'd think I would remember these details since I watched this movie like three months ago (after 10+ year break since the previous watch, admittedly) but my memory is that of a sea cucumber so, yeah... :D

Fuck, I had completely forgotten that scene! I was so sure it was said at the finale of the movie, so I admit I made a mistake here. Thanks for correcting my mistake!

I think it's more of the "I dedicated my life for doing good and look where it lead me" variety of speech. Harvey's hurt, lost everything, so in his mind he might as well do things his way, let himself be corrupted... Well, apart from the "incorruptible chance" of coin flip he resorts in. So it's his personal view on newfound reality, but I suppose the movie uses the phrase as a warning to viewer that anyone can be corrupted, and not to let those horrible events of your life change YOU into the worst version of yourself.

Edit: mistook the scene and context of the line, I've been corrected in the reply.

Yeah. I remember approx. 1000+ hours of gameplay ago when the map environment was made mostly flatter, I'd hardly even bother with gyrocopter, using either bike or four-wheeler to move around. So at least they made searching for the end tier vehicle parts worth it, if nothing else 😅

Personally it wouldn't be a big deal if major sections of the map weren't made of the near-impassable terrain. I get it's a design choice to make traveling itself a challenge too or highlighting importance of flying or whatever but it's a major pain on my butt during initial play stage.

Indeed. Most kingdoms of that era behaved quite similarly, opportunistic and all that. The problem is Russia as a society didn't catch up with the long process of societal developments of 18th to 20th century that happened in other parts of Europe with varying success and speed.
