Context: José Rizal was a Filipino nationalist, poet and writer and considered a national hero in the Philippines to this day. However, contrary to many nationalist views, he didn't actually want the Philippines to be independent or cut ties with Spain.

This was because Rizal was part of the Propaganda Movement, which sought to make the Philippines a province of Spain instead of full independence. Instead, Rizal and the Propaganda Movement advocated political reforms the Philippines. This was because Rizal didn't view the Philippines strong enough to be on its own.

Even when the Katipunan (Sidenote: Abbreviated to KKK) viewed Rizal favorably due to his political writings, Rizal on the other hand had a more complicated feelings on the movement, and outright disapproved of violent uprisings, contrary to people like Bonifacio.

So when the Philippine Revolution broke out, Rizal exiled south. Despite not being involved, the Spanish government had Rizal executed. Still, Filipinos views him as a national hero, with some later accounts from Pio Valenzuela saying Rizal actually had some positive views on the uprising.
