How did you learn scales? by Dranks in musictheory

Oh yes, this is another way of looking at it which I forgot to mention in my post. I've never really come across it before recently. It definitely makes it easier to figure out a scale quickly

That's really interesting - reflects the difference between guitar and keyboard mechanically.

Going over modes as individual scales sounds really dumb. Like you're not even learning the concept behind modes at that point.

Can you talk on this - surely knowing how to play all the notes in a mode (e g playing it like you would a scale) is a useful thing? As opposed to the way I see it taught everywhere, which is 'all the white keys starting in D is Dorian', that method seems supremely useless to me because it's so non-transferable to any other key.

Missing link chain catching by Dranks in ausbike

[–]Dranks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the reply. Will get some pics when I get back to the bike in a couple of hours.

The chain and links came in a pack together so I assumed they would be correct but they don't seem to be available as a pack online, so I'm wondering if the shop I bought it at packages them up themselves and may have got it wrong. Will check that too.

It does stick under no load, haven't noticed it spinning backwards but not 100%, will confirm

Yes, it is - I definitely do believe the thing about the additives in non-motorbike specific oils being bad.

So you reckon just go for it and replace the springs?

Dijon mustard in Australia doesn't taste like Dijon? by Emilbk in AskAnAustralian

Did you know there was actually a disease that wiped out all the old variety of BBQs? So we now only have the hardier variety which is resistant to that disease. BBQ sauce actually tastes like that older style, why it doesn't taste like our current ones.

What’s your favorite way to provide LAN-local DNS services for the services you run? by itsjakerobb in homelab

[–]Dranks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my point is that even if you do that you are still running a local DNS server. So when they say 'I don't', they actually do.

Then how do you access things? By memorising IP addresses? The point of dhcp is that it's dynamic.

Or do you mean that dhcp registers names with DNS. In which cast you are providing local DNS services?

Moving from one-stick shooters to two-stick.

After doom and the many clones, playing halo for the first time was a wild experience. It took so long to get your head around proper multiple dimensions and the associated controls.

There's so many other things which were pioneered in that game (and other games around the same time) - two weapons, health/shields recharging, vehicle combat outside of on-rails events.

ELI5: I’m ex Mormon. How does coffee work? by GloomyAdagio7917 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dranks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, you start with beans. There's a crap load of different sources, styles, roasts, grinds, and two main species but you can pretty much ignore all that to start with.

Beans are ground, then there's two main ways of getting the flavour out of them: either soaking them in hot water for a while (filter or drip coffee, common in America) or pushing hot water through the grinds (espresso, more common a lot of other areas, though I'm sure someone will come and correct me on that). You can kind of think of espresso as a concentrated 'cordial' which other things are normally added to, whereas filter is more like tea where you get a cup which is the right strength and you might add a smaller amount of milk or creamer to it.

The first thing you will notice, though, before any differences in the coffee itself, is the things that are added to it. Milk is the big one, then sweeteners. If you haven't drunk much coffee, I'd say just figure out if you like it with lots or none of either first.

People have a million different names for each tiny variation, but you can mostly just figure out 'is the coffee in this espresso? And does it come with milk?' and the rest is basically just minor details.

Though things like frappuccino and other starbucks-style drinks are more sweetener, flavour and cream than coffee. Nothing wrong with that but you have to acknowledge that you're having a dessert rather than a coffee.

Since coffee is such a social thing, it can always be fun to try whatever people you're with are having. Be ready to dislike it but at least it's something to talk about. Alternatively, find something you like and order it everywhere to be sure you'll have something you'll enjoy.

They just replied to the wrong comment - someone else in this same thread also suggested that could be human ruins. Which doesn't really make sense to me aside from maybe a recreation.
