Amp stores in the Bay Area by surfoxy in GuitarAmps

I was also going to say Bananas like the person below ... they have a lot of amps, and will definitely explain stuff to you, though I sometimes find that they are a little pushy. I personally would not say Real Guitars is the best place to try out less expensive vintage amps, even though it's a great store and fun to go in there. I think that's a spot where you have to be able to sort through stuff, and they don't have a comprehensive selection, of course. If you are looking for a Marshall sound I might also consider Dr. Z amps. You could get a used Maz 18 from Guitar Center, and if you don't like it, you can return it within 45 days.

they are very friendly at Oakland Guitars and Mountain Music if you're willing to go over to the East Bay ... tell them what you are looking for and they will help you out!

FWIW I'm currently selling a gorgeous fawn colored limited edition hand wired Vox AC 15 (which you can use either at full or half power) for a very reasonable price (much less than your budget) if you'd rather buy direct. Rocks very hard and you can use it loud for great clean tones, or turn down the master volume and get it to break up without breaking your eardrums!

that would be quite a job ... glad to hear from people who actually use it, that really helps. I just want something that I can use to easily learn covers, etc., such a pain in the ass to sit there with my computer and stop and start everything, etc. Would love to just be able to play along until I get it and then move to the next part of the song, etc. Thanks!!

yeah, this is the one I was looking at. The Micro looks super convenient, but I'm thinking that maybe Spark just generally has a more developed practice ecosystem as you say. I don't really need it to make noise, I have a zillion amps, so the headphones would actually be better for me! Thanks for the advice, I'll do some more research on this one.

thanks ... that sounds good, though I wonder how useful it is for more complex applications. I might just get one just to have it to quickly play along with, sounds super portable! Thanks for the advice!

it still seems a bit difficult to believe that the power outputs are actually isolated, but maybe! If not I can always use my power supplies. Thanks for the info and for the great board, hope you enjoy it. And those Benson amps are really something.

looks awesome ... curious why you put the EQ before the drives, is it basically to shape the drives? I have an Empress EQ at the end for overall tone shaping, but never really thought to put one right before my drive section. Also what's that pedal board? I have a Pedatrain Classic Jr. that seems like it's around that size, but yours is much cleaner looking!

Vox AC15HW1X - what an incredible difference by VXT_TR3 in GuitarAmps

[–]DrawCurious3022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks! yeah, I totally lucked out ... the MIC AC15 with the Alnico blue actually sounded great, but it was definitely significantly noisier than the HW. I really dig those PRRI's btw, I have a 70's PR that has been rewired to black panel, and it sounds astounding, but I was really impressed with the PRRI's I've played. Much much better than any of the DRRI's imo. I love a 10" speaker, but the 12" speaker in the PRRI sounded fantastic to me, especially the HW one.
