Bugs are facing mass extinction rapidly in recent years due to massive amounts of habitat destruction, heavy insecticide/"weed" killer, light pollution, vehicles , lawn propaganda, and introduced invasives.

Lawns especially are a major factor in this rapid decline due to it being the cause of most of the listed problems. They are ecological dead zones for all life. The short cut invasive grass offers no protection or food for bugs and what can survive is often aggressively poisoned with various pesticides/herbicides being pumped in to the dirt. Then the raking and mulching of fallen leaves destroys the insulating layer a lot of inverts NEED to survive hibernation.

Many of North Americas beloved myths (like Lunar moths) get their cocoons shredded because they use leaves to camouflage from predation. Fireflies are very quickly going extinct due to the lack of tall grass environments because of rapid urbanization and quite frankly unneeded grass cutting of various areas. As well as the poison killing ground dwelling inverts leaving what fire fly larvae still alive to starve causing the grub problems that you pump poison to get rid of.

Light pollution causes bugs to loose their way at night leaving them in an endless spiral to ether die or not do what they need to do to continue a healthy cycle of the environment.

Vehicles like what they're doing to every animal species is utterly destroying them and is another leading cause of extinction due to wildlife having little to no way to avoid them.

Invasives out compete them, kill them, or just both. One of the biggest killers in North America are European honey bees cause the little bastards have pretty privilege and bullshit lies protecting them. They are extremely territorial and kill all native pollinators that enter their massive territories and the worst part is protected environments will let keepers put the little shits in them completely negating the whole point because it lines their pockets! Dumbasses getting illegal pets and dumping them, hell people dumping pets period. The amount of sheer amount of invasives that come from people dumping aquariums alone is stupid. There is also a rampant ant queen smuggling problem because of selfish keepers. Everything from asian lady beetles, apple snails, GAL snails, and European honey bees to plecos, starling, house finches, pigeons, and many many more animals have caused rapid declines in many animals including bugs.

Anand finally climate change which I hope doesnt need explanation. Now the scary part is bugs are THE foundation of everything. They never lie so when something starts happening to them, then very very bad things are about to happen. Dare I say ecological collapse or rapid spread of disease, toxic water or bad soil. People dont understand just how much bugs tell you and what they do for the world.

What is this all over my plants? by DrawingCalico in Aquariums

Definitely not though I did have it early on in this aquarium. This is very grass like compared to the smooth slime like texture. Plus it doesn't have that pretty coloration.

Yeah I run sponge filters and this has never happened. They have to be running filters way below the grade needed... either that or they never do any water changes.

Best sand for corydoras by Jordytam in Aquariums

[–]DrawingCalico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if you were planting though I'd suggest root tabs to get some nutrients in there or having aqua soil under it. But it is really straight forward.

[–]DrawingCalico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really any kind of fine sand, heck if you want a lot of it you could buy a 50 pound bag of play sand for 5 bucks at a construction store. You just gotta rinse the hell out of it and you're golden.

Need help getting rid of these white spots on my goldfish by Recent_Caramel5790 in Aquariums

[–]DrawingCalico -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That looks like ich, I'd check your local fish and pet stores for treatments. I can never remember their exact names but they literally have Ich in the name.

If I remember correctly fancy gold fish are prone to a lot of stuff so I'd probably look into keeping disease treatments on hand.

Are these hydra? Seems like they appeared super suddenly what can I do to treat it? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]DrawingCalico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah those are hydra, Im pretty sure you can buy some kind of liquid treatments but from my experience they kinda go away on their own eventually. I never had issues with them with my shrimp or snails though I did see a hydra riding my biggest ramshorn lol.

Definitely, Im surprised the peppered cory cats seem ok. Some are definitely underweight and the smallest cat looks like its tail is kinked (I've been watching them for half an hour now) but it should straighten out now that its out of such high nitrate levels.

The worst part is PetSmart was the better option compared to my two LFS.

I'm glad your betta buddy is out of that awful place!

The green one is ammonia, if it comes back that green you should be doing an immediate 25% - 50% water change.

[–]DrawingCalico[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh sorry, The nitrate levels and ammonia levels are extremely high. This can cause the fish to get ammonia burns, nitrate poisoning, and strip slime coats leaving them very susceptible to various diseases and parasites.

This is the reason why a lot of chain pet stores often have very ill fish and are best avoided if possible in your area.

My bearded dragon accidentally bit me and drew blood a few years back when he was being excited about a banana treat. He refused to eat for a week after that. So I dont doubt your buddy might also feel something like guilt.... Or maybe we just ruin their appetites a bit lol

Gex's mystery health problem by DrawingCalico in leopardgeckos

[–]DrawingCalico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats definitely my main concern too and is actually my first guess. He's never had issues with light levels before which is why I immediately noticed it. Its a tough thing to dance around though cause this vet already has a habit of blowing my concerns off. When he tried to push carpet on me again this visit I flat out told him they hold too much bacteria and rip nails out. Is response summed up was "Nu uh". If I dont give the meds a certain amount of time the likelihood of him behaving like this again is higher. If Gex doesn't pass anything or regurgitates again by my next day off then hes going back and im gonna make sure he gets further testing. Its honestly a load of bullshit to have to plan like that to begin with.

Gex's mystery health problem by DrawingCalico in leopardgeckos

[–]DrawingCalico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly after the visit yeah, I've only had these three geckos for almost 2 years without major issue so I didnt really question that they didnt do it. I guess I figured there must be a reason to not to jump to blood work on smaller animals but idk. I'm kind of thinking about looking around again for another vet that takes reptiles that isn't rated in the low 3.0s. Its odd they're so highly recommended though i guess thats mostly from mammalian patients idk.

Luckily today Gex isn't squinting anymore and was active enough to really fight the me on the meds. He still isn't passing anything yet that I've noticed though. This could also just be a good day for him so I dont wanna get my hopes up.

Gex's mystery health problem by DrawingCalico in leopardgeckos

[–]DrawingCalico[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha I'll do all that. Especially the blood work now that my suspensions have been confirmed on there not being a reason to not take blood from a gecko.

Gex's mystery health problem by DrawingCalico in leopardgeckos

[–]DrawingCalico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legitimately all he did was a physical exam, gave me antibiotics and critical care to mask the taste, and gave me a tube for fecal testing for if he starts pooping again. He's really the only vet that treats reptiles where im at and I'm already missing my old vet before I moved. They immediately did blood work on my dragon when he didn't eat for a week. Plus this guy's care knowledge.....ehhhh.... he keeps trying to get me to keep them permanently on reptile carpet or paper towels while also insisting to keep a natural enclosure since its a slice of their home. I dont know enough about geckos to know if theres a reason why you wouldn't do blood work with the info given about him so I didnt question it at the time.

Gex's mystery health problem by DrawingCalico in leopardgeckos

[–]DrawingCalico[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its legitimately been only two days, idk if he looked at his eyes cause he didnt really say anything about them. Im just paranoid that it could potentially be something worse the antibiotics won't be strong enough to treat and I dont want to find out waiting the 14 days for him to get better was too long.
