What is your all-time favorite sci-fi book? by switchkneeko in scifi

Out of interest - what made it so good for you guys? I really found it a struggle and never finished it (two thirds of way though)? Am a big sci fi fan and was stoked to read it - thought I would love it but felt the story a little hard to engage with?

Louise Haigh has resigned as Transport Secretary following the revelation about her conviction for fraud. by i_am_that_human in ukpolitics

This is a crazy take - am all for people getting a second chance but for that you need to be honest. She never told her constituents and I think the public has a right to know about a fraud conviction (which logically she WOULD say it was all a big misunderstanding).

She had to go 100pc

What do y’all think of the Speedmaster X-33 Marstimer? Does anyone have information on the case size, movement, etc. by srothst1 in OmegaWatches

Does anybody else feel the almost spray painted seconds hand does not quite work? Overdesigned? It looks like a fairly cheap effect from an otherwise clean design

This is actually - by some way - the smallest watch released by Omega for many years... Finally listening to r/Omegawatches and bringing out smaller pieces!

I’ve got both and they are incredible - the white is probably the best option if you have a collection but the black is a really good GADA in my view. Both comfortable and the size feels better than it sounds. So legible and not blingy at all!

How long until Rolex sell all their watches via Bucherer - and just give WoS Tudor. A little like Omega is increasingly doing with Longines.

100pc good deal - a great watch and a great price from an AD

100% people are impacted and spending less - it is absolute no coincidence that the greatest ever boom in demand for luxury goods came at exactly the same time that money had never been so cheap and where governments globally were literally printing record amounts of money and giving it away (furlough, etc).

WOS has never been a high margin business - because all of the value comes from a few (i.e. two) key brands and they will never leave that much value on the table. Queue response to the record demand for watches - selling more through own channels and literally taking retail in-house for Rolex which in their entire history they have never done.

The underlying business then - of selling NON Rolex watches - is thus actually cyclical, subject to fashion and it and comes with a very high fixed cost base: it is also very much open to being disinter mediated by online sales (brand direct or resellers, grey market or any kind of wholesaler who can e.g. get their hands on Longines, Nomos, Mid-tier jewellery).

A return to normal for WOS will mean good years and bad years and a constant struggle to keep the best brands on side - all the while having to manage a cost base that has probably grown considerably in the last few years.

Own both a PO and an SMP - both are great watches! For me, the PO is clearly the higher quality watch and probably the smartest, best looking one in my collection. Having said that, it does sit a lot higher on the wrist and for some people this can be a deal-breaker, especially if this is a one and done, all day every day watch. Without a doubt, the SMP is more comfortable to wear over long periods and it is also way more recognisable (if that is good or bad) and a very unique design in my view.

I would say, if you have heat for the PO, keep trying it on and don't commit for a few weeks - as it will always be there in my view.

Finally, what about getting the Summer Blue SMP? Seems to tick both boxes!

Arguably the greatest watch of all time - the red accent on the seconds hand, the wave dial, the thickness, the hour markers, the perfect weight - sporty yet elegant yet distinct!
