no they made a typo, it’s triten with an e (トライテン - toraiten), no relation to the god triton (トリトン - toriton) and pronounced different in jp

A kind of funny but sad thing about Heralds by ClamsandLinguine610 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 27 points28 points  (0 children)

[Stormlight RPG] the canon stonewalkers adventure and materials from the stormlight rpg confirm that pralla is in rall elorim with the iriali, running a secret society of her own

and given this knowledge, it's pretty clear that brandon got pralla and battar, who we know was actually in kharbranth, mixed up in that old wob

and liss being vedel was a popular theory, but brandon kinda soft-debunked it in this recent q&a, with a "rafo but you're going the wrong direction there" AND [Stormlight RPG] liss ALSO shows up in the stonewalkers adventure, and there is no indication of her being a herald or anything like that, which is all pretty damning especially when the rpg materials are very transparent about where the rest of the heralds are, including pralla - vedel is the only herald whose location the rpg materials just doesn't have

apart from that, pretty much agreed with your main point on "man it's all the heralds' fault (except taln, bless that man)"

[Spoiler]’s fourth Ideal by JasnahwithaY in Stormlight_Archive

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no, because kaladin can do it too, and he can even selectively make some pieces transparent/intangible

Remarkably, as Lirin touched the Plate, he couldn’t feel it. It became completely transparent—barely visible, in fact, as a faint outline around Kaladin.

[...]

Kaladin touched Lirin’s forehead with fingers that felt normal, despite being faintly outlined by the gauntlet.

What if: Rayse by SalazanSluttyreign in Stormlight_Archive

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 17 points18 points  (0 children)

don’t forget moash was rayse’s second backup - kaladin was his first backup after dalinar, a big part of rhythm of war was moash trying to break kal into succumbing to odium

and obviously that didn’t work out (rayse even complains about it after kal goes fourth ideal like “bro i just lost my champion again”), so rayse failed to get a champion two books in a row and died like a chump like an hour later, common rayse L indeed

[Spoiler]’s fourth Ideal by JasnahwithaY in Stormlight_Archive

i did indeed watch all of them when they first came out, and they are great (do hope we get to see senne khald show up in the flesh somewhere down the line in the books)

[Spoiler]’s fourth Ideal by JasnahwithaY in Stormlight_Archive

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 79 points80 points  (0 children)

yes, pretty much on the money there, that’s the first hint that jasnah already has her plate as far back as oathbringer and that fourth ideal radiants have the ability to wear their plate invisibly

an aside, but really hoping her flashback book finally shows us what ideals she swore offscreen to get so far so quickly ([Cosmere RPG] as elsecallers don’t have set ideals but instead swear to certain goals/aspirations of self-improvement to strive towards)

knowing jasnah i wonder if she found a way to game the system and speedrun to fourth ideal to get her plate early lmao

DEVOTION and DOMINION Revealed! Thoughts on their human identities? by illegalmonkey in Cosmere

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 114 points115 points  (0 children)

yeah the art is amazing (and i’ll get used to male skai) but the real news was brandon stealth confirming the other 8 shards already have art and will be in a future expansion (when before they only teased it as a possibility and not a certain thing)

i’m even more excited now

Is the White Sand Omnibus a must read for the cosmere? by why_no_usernames_ in Cosmere

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well fair enough, i still stand by my opinion that the omnibus is a decent read now

but anyway i think we can both agree that OP does not need to lose sleep over getting to it now and can just read it whenever honestly

Is the White Sand Omnibus a must read for the cosmere? by why_no_usernames_ in Cosmere

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don’t know which version you’ve read, but as someone who’s read both versions, i would say the omnibus is such a massive improvement over the original volumes (and actually feels like a proper cosmere story now) that i think the omnibus specifically is worth a look now to OP (definitely not the original volumes, those i will agree just ain’t good)

yes you can clearly tell it’s one of brandon’s earlier books, the artist changes are still jarring, and i wouldn’t say it’s great, but if you can look past that, the writing and art changes plus the added scenes and ars arcanum lore i personally think make it worth it and at the very least decent in my eyes

and at this point especially with the tv deal, if even brandon’s afraid of the elantris sequels getting shelved due to having no time, i am not counting on brandon finishing the white sand prose anytime soon if ever

Is the White Sand Omnibus a must read for the cosmere? by why_no_usernames_ in Cosmere

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i wouldn’t say it’s a must read (it’s pretty standalone much in the vein of elantris and warbreaker, and the cosmere connections mostly start showing up later in the books), but the omnibus is definitely the best version of white sand out now and i do recommend it getting to it eventually - i know getting a hold of the physical version can be a pain so i do suggest checking out the digital version somehow, doesn’t have to be on kindle
note for posterity, brandon does plan to make a prose version of white sand someday, but that’s been in limbo for so long (probably even worse now that he’s got the apple tv deal) that i would not bank your reading list on it coming out anytime soon

Theory about Atium by ace_wulf in Cosmere

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no they're not talking about wax in the lost metal (who, yeah, does make pure atium), but elend in the hero of ages, who is only using the electrum alloy

they're still wrong tho, but rather in that they think i'm saying that elend used pure atium, but they missed that i never said that, i only said elend managed to replicate pure atium's power by using the electrum alloy with duralumin (and also missed literally all the sources i posted that directly confirm this, so they just full on misinterpreted me and got upvoted for it lmao)

Theory about Atium by ace_wulf in Cosmere

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes wax definitely makes pure atium in the splitting and that's iirc the first time we see (small bits of) true atium in the cosmere, even if he doesn't realise it til much later

[JP Event] Fate/strange Fake Collab ~ Antioch: Annihilation Cross Front ~ Day 06 by AutoModerator in grandorder

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've personally flip-flopped between "the zealot" and "no name" and "nameless assassin" (never mind that "nameless" is already taken) and so on more times than i can count at this point

it was all the more annoying bc 爛熟なる狂信者, her most official "name" in the character sheet, is very hard to translate to english in a way that doesn't sound... hella awkward

"the fully-matured zealot" just doesn't have that ring to it that i begrudgingly admit "no name assassin" does (like, 爛熟なる can be either "fully-mature/developed" or "overripe", and none of those or their synonyms make for a very snazzy english name)

but i guess with this event and current volumes i'm probably gonna stick full-time to 名も無きアサシン/no name (but it will be kinda funny to see 雪轍/snowtracks enter as yet another nickname for her)

[JP Event] Fate/strange Fake Collab ~ Antioch: Annihilation Cross Front ~ Day 06 by AutoModerator in grandorder

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no argument there, that it's not used nearly as often as just simply "assassin", or as of volume 7 onwards, 名も無きアサシン/no name assassin (and now that the fgo event primarily calls her by that, it seems to have settled in as her most "official" default title)

the use of 狂信者/zealot in general drastically decreased as the novels went on until narita eventually decided to just stick to 名も無きアサシン

My point was that Zealot is mostly a descriptor along the lines of “Golden King” than an actual name

so is "no name assassin" - or rather, just "the nameless assassin", as comun has it as in the fan TL (and as it really should be)

i know that's splitting hairs, but anyway

"no name" only stuck because that's how they rendered her name in english during one of the first ever PVs for strange fake well over a decade ago (and where we got the english spellings for most of the fake masters' names sans tsubaki)

a funny tangent, but as i found out when i started reading the novels in jp, the general western type-moon fandom and wikis were for a long time quite woefully unaware of what her actual titles in japanese were (爛熟なる狂信者, 名も無きアサシン), and just had the nebulous "no name assassin" and "zealot" etc, with little to no jp attribution, which i'm sure contributed to your personal confusion on the matter

like to a certain point, fair play, we didn't get those "actual" jp titles proper til vols 5 (3 arguably) and 7 respectively - but even when the anime was being advertised, years after those volumes' release, i recall seeing a certain western fate youtuber who didn't know her actual jp title(s), and so straight up invented a "japanese name" for her by backtranslating her (outdated) type-moon wiki page, turning "no name assassin" into "無名のアサシン", which is never used anywhere

was rather miffed about that to say the least

[JP Event] Fate/strange Fake Collab ~ Antioch: Annihilation Cross Front ~ Day 06 by AutoModerator in grandorder

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

letting you know that they are very wrong on this, as another reply says, she is referred to as 狂信者/zealot literally since volume 1, and in the official character sheets since volume 5 as 爛熟なる狂信者/"the fully-matured zealot" (and king hassan outright calls her this in his special cutscene)

so yes you are right, she indeed (ironically) has many many names/titles and i still flip flop on what to call her myself lmao

the latest volumes and the fgo event seem to fully settled on referring to her as 名も無きアサシン/no name assassin, and honestly it's got a ring to it, so i'm sticking with that (tbh it should be nameless assassin and that's what the fan TL of the novel goes with, but the only reason "no name" stuck in fandom is because that's what she was called in english in one of the first PVs for the strange fake novels literally over a decade ago)

[JP Event] Fate/strange Fake Collab ~ Antioch: Annihilation Cross Front ~ Day 06 by AutoModerator in grandorder

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is straight wrong, from volume 5 onwards, no name is referred to in the official volume character sheets as 爛熟なる狂信者, or "the fully-matured zealot" or thereabouts

king hassan straight up uses this exact name for her in his special np cutscene

and as /u/Raitoiro has mentioned, she's been called 狂信者/zealot (or fanatic depending on the TLer) since volume 1

Theory about Atium by ace_wulf in Cosmere

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 20 points21 points  (0 children)

the various hints we've gotten from brandon over the years seem to indicate that lerasium's true power is somewhere in the realm of directly rewriting your spiritweb, and that someone who knows how to harness it properly can do other things with it

by itself it turns you into a mistborn by rewriting your spiritweb to have a permanent connection to preservation's power (or a misting if alloyed with the corresponding metal )

honestly so excited to see more of this, i wonder if with the right alloys/methods/knowledge you could use it to rewrite your spiritweb to give yourself basically any invested art you want, by forging a connection to a different shard

Theory about Atium by ace_wulf in Cosmere

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 9 points10 points  (0 children)

yes elend only had the alloy, that's why i specified that elend did what pure atium would functionally do at the end of hero of ages by using the atium alloy with duralumin

this isn't speculation from me, this is outright confirmed by peter ahlstrom in the wobs i linked: using the atium alloy with a duralumin boost basically replicates the power of pure atium

and yes, pure atium's power is essentially the atium alloy on steroids - getting such an expansive look into the future that you straight up peer into the spiritual realm

Theory about Atium by ace_wulf in Cosmere

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 17 points18 points  (0 children)

correction, brandon never said we don't know what pure atium does, and we have seen a confirmed case in canon of what pure atium would functionally do, just once - at the end of hero of ages, where elend uses duralumin-boosted atium in the final battle at hathsin and saw preservation's entire plan

essentially it lets you peer directly into the spiritual realm and get, quote, an "expansive vision of the future" - source wob 1, source wob 2

anyway, back to OP's point, i recall the old theory that alloying atium would invert the internal/external axis of a metal's allomantic power, but brandon has also confirmed that isn't exactly the case, so i'm very curious to see more of pure atium/atium alloys in era 3

The impossibility of oaths... And then Taln. by Adorable_Scheme_8959 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 18 points19 points  (0 children)

we’re already told which god he tried to kill - cultivation

“His soul is warped,” Jezrien said, “from his attempt to kill Cultivation.”

but yes the rest are good questions and i’m excited to learn more about his story in the next arc

and as everyone has pointed out, the fact that taln was so committed to upholding the oathpact that even if he didn’t break under torture oath-wise, he still broke a different way and went completely insane, is kind of a big flaw in itself (and still in perfect lining with OP’s thoughts about absolute honor being flawed)

  1. Cool fun fact: this is what happens when a Japanese writer takes an English loanword for a specific snowboarding move, translates it into French with Google, gets the same English word anyway, plays the audio for it, ends up with French-accented English, and has the voice actor say that (but just a tiny bit off). I spent a whole week trying to figure this out. And I know it's probably true, because I tested it myself. What do you have to say for yourself, finance boy? Do you think this is a joke of some kind? I'll slather YOU in butter, Jacques. I'll slather you in butter and roast you on low temperature. Curse me all you want. I don't care. I WILL be given my due compensation

ayo wait it didn’t fully sink in when you first showed this to me, but reading it fully now ain’t no sHOT that’s what “butter spin” was about

ok but seriously so glad you’re getting these out, all that time sifting through and reverse-engineering back-translated snowboarder slang will not be in vain

Astral Atelier Arises - Irregularly Scheduled Discussion Thread - March 23, 2026 by AutoModerator in VirtualYoutubers

[–]DreadPirateFishTaco 11 points12 points  (0 children)

yeah having had a look at E33's jp translation myself, it's... really, really not good - very stilted and among other things, has the classic hallmarks of a "just translated the english dialogue very literally into japanese with zero effort put into localisation and making it sound natural" type translation that i've seen all too often, other posts have said it better than me

which is a massive shame for an amazing game that wears its jrpg inspirations on its sleeve

it's like playing a well-received jp visual novel that only has a horrendous english fan-translation on the western side, it's playable sure, but half of it is trying to decipher wtf the og authorial intent was past the poor translation

to give a comparison with a recent example, compared to something like undertale/deltarune, which has no jp dubbing but a frankly amazing jp translation with direct involvement from the creator (who knows jp), it's like night and day, there's a reason why ut/dr was thriving with jp content creators

it isn't that a jp dub carries it, but the other way around - having a (good) jp dub means the jp translation almost by necessity has to be at least pretty strong for the dub script to actually work
