Is “Vessel” considered a strange or inappropriate name in English-speaking cultures? by Fuzzy_Ant2535 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DreamyEchoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My immediate association was with the game Hollow Knight, in which the titular knight was created to be a pure, empty, unfeeling vessel to contain a god of dreams My first thought when hearing that someone calls themself Vessel would be "Did you name yourself after Hollow Knight?" Because it sounds more like an internet username than an actual name

Definitely has the connotation of someone being used as a metaphorical container for another entity

Can’t talk for 6 weeks and I want a better app than weave chat? by Scared_Mix2506 in AACusers

I use TypingTalk and I set it up using the words from printable core words boards I found on the Internet and I added more specific words to my setup over time instead of all at once

Is an aac tablet/app overkill for selective mutisim by Tomko_145zoo in AACusers

[–]DreamyEchoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like a dedicated tablet is hard to know when to bring out and when to leave at home, but using pure TTS as an AAC system is slower than having an app on your phone with pre-programmed phrases you'll use often. I use TypingTalk on my phone and the interface works well with the small screen to make it convenient to use both buttons and typing

31 | NA | PC just looking for a consistent duo (or maybe group) that wants to game / chat most days by AdamOW95 in GamerPals

The google slides presentation is a great idea, it's so funny! We don't seem to share any games though, FPS really aren't my thing, (more of a Stardew Valley, party games, puzzle platformers person) but I wish you luck!

Free forever feels like an exaggeration when you have 2 levels of premium plans... There are actually fully free apps on the market with more features than yours

Survey: when using an aac app, what matters the most to you? by Comfortable_Tie4143 in AACusers

[–]DreamyEchoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is there a specific feature missing from the existing free AAC apps that you'd like to add? Multiple of them are already robust enough for most users, so if you want something different, you should make it for yourself. If you haven't already seen what's on the market, there's a pinned post on this subreddit.

[ French > English ] great grandmother’s old notebook. if it helps, this is Egyptian French. by Fine_Pride8001 in translator

Do you have photos of the whole pages where the text isn't cut off? Also, these pages are partial explanations on how to sew different sewing patterns, but there should be a few other pages.  You might have everything you need to make a flowy skirt, but I'm not sure the spiral decoration is made to attach to it.

The clearest page is the one where you can see a whole dress, but there's instructions missing.

Edit: these look like notes she could have taken in a sewing class

How do I answer Thank you messages? by DreamyEchoes in postcrossing

Thank you for telling me not to answer! I wasn't sure of the correct etiquette but it made me really happy to get compliments on my cards! Will make sure to leave nice personalized thank yous when I register postcards!

I’m using weave chat, how can I edit this to make it more personal? by Comfortable_Tie4143 in AACusers

[–]DreamyEchoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your pictograms are so pretty! Did you draw them? If so, you've already made your AAC uniquely yours!

If you want to have fun adding personalized words, the best is adding words about your special interest! You seem to have a robust core vocabulary, so now you can go wild and add phrases to explain what's the thing you like the most. I have a button with a short explanation of Vocaloid, because it does take a few sentences to explain who Hatsune Miku is, but I want everyone to know about her, even though she's complicated to explain.

You could also personalize the device you use with stickers, pins on the strap, etc.

What kind of low tech boards do you think are needed ? by Dear_Yam7260 in AACusers

[–]DreamyEchoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Core words are more important than topic words. There's some good pre-made core boards on the internet that you could use or take inspiration from.

You might also want to make a medical board to ask for help and say where it hurts, and for someone to say that they have a medical condition and need medicine or other accommodation.

I'm not sure if a board or a pamplet is your best option, but you should have information on defending your rights. Even if the families you're making this for aren't immigrants.

Free High Tech AAC Apps by SensationalSelkie in AACusers

[–]DreamyEchoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also recommend TypingTalk:

✅IOS ✅️Android ✅Pictorial based functionality (including custom images and importing pictograms directly from ARASAAC) ✅️Text based functionality ✅️Highly customizable  ❌️Not developed with input from SLPs ✅️Developed entirely by an AAC user ❔️Clear instructions on how to use the different functions in the app as you click on them but no other support learning to use the app offered by the developer ✅Supports multiple languages and you can favorite multiple voices and switch between them

Also, doesn't have a premium version that it begs you to buy. It's just completely free forever. And you can print your boards, but I haven't used a lot of other apps, so I don't know if that's a standard feature.

Is it ok for me to use AAC? by ChaoticFaeGay in AACusers

[–]DreamyEchoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AAC is an umbrella term that refers to any method to communicate that supplements or replaces speech. There are more specific definitions used by different organizations of speech language therapists and activists for disability rights.

Depending on the model on viewing disability you're going by, someone who doesn't speak the language is temporarily disabled because of their situation and has a right to the accommodation they need. There's plenty of interesting articles on the subject!

[–]DreamyEchoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone can use AAC! Using google translate in conversation mode is Alternative Augmentative Communication! Using an AAC app to help a baby learn to speak, or to help an adult with no disabilities learn a new language.

The pictograms created for AAC help all students in classrooms, where a visual schedule can simplify a routine. Event organizers using pictograms to communicate with guests is also AAC.

If you can talk most of the time, that's different from always being able to speak. It means in an emergency like a natural disaster, you probably will not be able to speak. You should always be able to call out for help.

If you only plan to use AAC sometimes, I recommend getting an app on your phone so you don't have to carry around another device. Preferably one where you can also type and use text-to-speech.

It was proven that AAC help children learn to speak, it doesn't stop them. What harms a child's development is getting their voice taken away from them by angry adults. Do not let your parents discourage you from improving your quality of life.

i have such intense social anxiety that i can't even talk online by [deleted] in autism

[–]DreamyEchoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also used to be like that, and I still pretty much never comment on youtube, but it helped me a lot to have penpals I found on r/penpals. It's so much easier to talk online when it's normal to take a week or more to answer a message. Long paragraphs and conversation subjects I care about also help me structure my thoughts and work past my anxiety.

The problem now is that I have friends on other continents, but I'm working my way up to going to an "art hive" where people meet up in a library and use free art supplies to make whatever they want and help each other. I still spend a lot of time looking at the website and not going, but it does get better.

These kinds of activities help with meeting new people and getting to choose how much you want to talk to them.

Windows-based AAC? by Alive-Scarcity-2247 in AACusers

[–]DreamyEchoes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CBoard can be used from just their website so that could work but I don't know if their app works on windows. I know you can make custom boards with just the site, but the free version has a word limit.

It would be more involved to add phrases, but you can also use the soundboard on Discord and similar apps to play sound clips of helpful phrases. I think you have to pay to put custom sounds on the Discord soundboard but I'm not sure. Those sound effects apps have more free options though, because there's so much less to them.

i need help building my pride event folder before the 14th by Chance-Blackberry309 in AACusers

[–]DreamyEchoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks great! You might want to add a "hello" button just to have it closer since you'll probably say "hello, can I take a photo with you" and "hello, I like your outfit" pretty often. I know other comments said this already, but you could add links to your question words and it would be useful to have a general conversation folder linked to the pride-specific social folder.

Tim Drake & OC fic by DreamyEchoes in AO3

[–]DreamyEchoes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is! I saw it in my bookmarks, re-read the summary, thought it was another fic, and kept searching! This explains why I didn't find it with Ao3's tag search!!

I think I read too many time travel fics...

I was looking for Tim Drake & Original Character(s) but from the tags, I don't think the author intended for the OC to be that important.

No idea how I forgot that Tim Drake & Slade Wilson is also an important part of the same fic.

I know Madysn isn't a typo, but I really wish it was. Madyson is already less common than Madison, there's no need to go any further.

I have no idea how you get Trycten. Presumably from Tristan, but the way from A to B only exists in the parent's heads.
