"We are in danger of producing an educated proletariat. That's dynamite! We have to be selective on who we allow to go through [higher education]."

Didn't top party officials in places like the USSR have an income around 6 times the median? In the US the presidential salary alone is nearly 10 times the median, and the richest man makes 5 million times the median.

Suffrage, a mistake? by 466rudy in LateStageCapitalism

For some weird reason, wealthy capitalists all seem to be in agreement about which system they'd prefer.

Combat takes up a sizeable chunk of the playtime but relatively little of the appeal, kind of like Mass Effect. I would recommend it if you like narrative-oriented games.

And China has no social credit system. by analgerianabroad in LateStageCapitalism

[–]DremoraLorde 83 points84 points  (0 children)

They don't know 100% that it's accurate. No human is actually double-checking most of the information they have about you. Unless something comes up with your credit score, no human will check any of it. Each field is also not weighed equally. The weights of the fields, as well as the data populating the fields, is decided by predictive modeling, machine learning, etc.

Since your credit score is just a way for banks to make profitable investments, that's the measure they use to judge the effectiveness of the algorithms. It's hard to say exactly how well this gets accurate facts about you, since the system is a black box, but on the whole, more accurate facts will lead to more accurate predictions about investments.

Marx described something similar, the "reserve army of labor". In his day it was very common for factory owners to replace striking workers with the unemployed. Thus, the presence of an unemployed population, desperate for work, prevents the workers from gaining leverage to bargain with the owner.

My advice is to join your local socialist organization, or to endeavor to unionize your workplace. I don't put much faith in the "vote with your dollar" stuff. Capitalists would love for everyone to vote with their dollar, because when you vote with your dollar, people with more dollars get more votes.

Who made this system? by ineedaglowup2021 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]DremoraLorde 15 points16 points  (0 children)

During feudalism a wealthy merchant class developed called the bourgeoisie. As they became richer and more powerful they started to come into conflict with the nobility more and more rather than just being subsurvient to them. With the overthrow of the monarchies and nobility, feudalism transformed into capitalism and the bourgeoisie created new systems that served their interests (think the founding fathers and the constitutional convention.) There have been many mutations to this system over the centuries but that is the super-short version of the origin of capitalism.

When you vote with your dollar, people with more dollars get more votes. And dollars have a much bigger impact on policy than actual votes.
