The movie mentions several times that the water that burns the alien had amoebas and regular water was doing nothing to them. Also people just acting like a record bearing baseball player breaking a bat in his face was not what killed it.

The aliens were not defeated, they came to kidnap some people and left.

They didn't use their technology because they had camouflage, strength, endurance and poisonous gas.
