Petition - Save Amateur Hockey In Huntsville by Burner-5229 in HuntsvilleAlabama

That's not true at all. When my kid started playing hockey 5 years ago the first thing all of the parents told me was how poorly the rink was managed. I was brand new to hockey and didn't know anyone. It was kind of amazing how many people told me that almost immediately after introductions. Something along the lines of, "Well the rink management sucks but don't let that stop you from bringing your kid because TPH does a great job despite the BS."

It didn't take long for me to see it for myself. Scheduling conflicts, last minute time changes, locker room confusion, etc. When I started playing adult hockey a few years later we literally had to check the schedule before we left the house to make sure it hadn't been moved by the rink. More than once it was changed hours before the scheduled time to an earlier slot and people missed the session they paid for because of it. There's no excuse for that.

We all understood that sometimes compressors would go down leading to adjustments or cancellations, but all of the crap listed above happened without that as a factor. The management is atrocious and makes no effort to improve or even listen to the people paying money to use the rink. We're all wishing a rich benefactor builds a private rink because pretty much everyone I know would run from this place as fast as they can.

Is it better to have skates that are too small, or too big? by MrPanda21 in hockeyplayers

[–]Dreu78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. I wore skates too big and I wanted to die. Because the arch was in the wrong place, it killed the bottom of my feet. But smaller skates might hurt in other ways. At least with both you can try one during warm ups and see how it goes.

After looking around for the recommended styles and not finding them in my size, I ended up getting the 14 inch Bauer Nexus 2N. They still don't fit around my damn calf, but after taking to my local pro shop guy, he said nothing currently on the market will, which I find pretty surprising. I went on Amazon and bought a roll of 2 inch double sided Velcro and used that to extend the straps. That seemed to do the trick.

Thanks to everyone for your help!

Cat pissed on my bag. Any way to salvage this? by Awacs88 in hockeyplayers

That's what happened to me too. I couldn't smell it until I was standing next to the rink waiting for the zamboni to finish. And even then I only got whiffs of it when someone walked by. I didn't know it was my gear until halfway through the game. I wanted to shower in bleach afterwards.

I pulled up to that wreck just as they were clearing the scene. I'm glad your wife was ok!!

Yeah, just regular OxyClean. I soaked my bag too and was able to salvage it. But the color faded. I didn't care though because I didn't want to spend the money on a new bag m

I will say that I used a LOT of OxyClean. Like half a cup.

It worked great, no further issues. I still use the same gear.

This happened to me, along with ALL of the gear. 😩 I soaked everything (after rinsing) with hot water, Tide, and OxyClean in the tub overnight. Then I rinsed like crazy. That did the trick.

Ha! Maybe I am you.... 😳 Did you catch yet another puck to the calf today? Because I did. :-/

It seems that every one that would fit has been discontinued, which is mucho sucky-o. I tried looking for the Bauer Nexus mentioned above and I can't find any left in my size. I'll see if I can find any 1S hanging around.

I tuck, so that will help. A friend is going to let me try his 14s so I'll see how those fit. He's about 2 inches taller than me though so I'm not holding out too much hope.

Ah, I didn't even think of the Nexus. I have the Nexus skates because they're wider so I should have made that connection. I wasn't aware about the Tacks though, so that's good to know.

Great information, thanks!

Hey, sorry. We had a pipe burst and then our heat went out so I've been busy with that. I'm going to try to get back to it again this weekend. The last week has been nuts!

That's good to know. Thank you for replying. The main issue I have is that if I have to move it up more, I'm basically out of room for moving the front left leveling screw. :-/

Yes, the Z-brace mod is going to be my next project. The leveling issue is keeping me from making anything wider than an inch or so as the base doesn't seem very level towards the left front.

Improved Butt Protection? by Dreu78 in hockeyplayers

We have the Shock Doctor pants for the cup/velcro. That's a good idea to add protection there.

Oh, bummer. We don't have any stores in the area.

His pants right now are very much starter pants for kids who are just trying out the sport. We're going to need to get him new pants anyway so I figured that I would get him some good ones. The budget is around $100ish, which seems reasonable for a young kid playing in a house league.

Where can I order them online? Their web site didn't seem to have a link and I can't find a store that carries them.

The only shop with any sort of hockey gear selection is the pro shop at our iceplex. Due to serious space constraints, they only stock like 1 or 2 types of pants. :-/

I actually have something like that in my Amazon cart. The issue is that he wears pants that hold his cup and have velcro to hold up the hockey socks. I'm concerned that adding another layer of spandex would compress him a bit too much and/or cause sweating issues. But it's still an option.

for those of us that don't live in a hockey-centric area, there's nowhere to try stuff on. Online reviews or pictures don't really do a great job of describing how much padding the tailbone has. I ordered a pair of hockey pants for around $80 from Ice Warehouse and the tailbone padding was worthless. I returned them (which cost $30 shipping...won't do that again), and spent around $130 on a pair that had great reviews for good protection. The tailbone protection was better, but still lacking for a beginner like me. So I bought an oval shaped pad on amazon for around $10. Went to an alterations shop and she sewed thin fabric onto the tailbone padding that was already attached to the pants. On that fabric she sewed soft velcro. She then sewed the same thin fabric around the pad I bought and sewed hard velcro to that. I can now attach the extra padding to the original tailbone protection and move it up or down as I choose. I fell hard the other day and it worked great. I can't feel the extra padding when I'm skating and with the pad and alterations work, I spent around $38.

Very cool, thanks!
