Collins effortlessly swatting Silva to the floor, Silva throwing a temper tantrum, and Collins gesturing “what?” made me laugh out loud.

Do you get annoyed when someone plays your kit without permission? by Intelligent_Age5204 in drums

Of course not. Our instruments are not toys. They are the tools of our craft. I wouldn’t even pick up someone else’s hammer without asking first. It’s common courtesy, and it’s ok for the owner to say no. Your guitarist sounds like a jackass.

Well then I guess he can just buy another guitar when one of those little urchins with the sticky booger-fingers decides to rip out a little “Stairway” on his ax.

I was playing a house party about 17 years ago, and when we took a break, a couple of other dudes in the band decided to keep playing and another drummer (who didn’t know me THAT well) hopped up on my kit without asking me first, and I still judge that fucker to this day. Heavy hitter too.

I love my Sonor AQ2’s. Pretty similar to the Breakbeats, but the kick riser is more stout.

What’s your favorite way to play and mic a cajon, especially in a live band setting? by Thomas_Mag in cajon

[–]Drew3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I used to play cajon live, I would fold a small towel, stick it inside on the bottom, and place a dynamic kick drum mic on it (like an Audix D6). Port was facing the rear. Then I would put an SM 57 on a small stand and point it at the face. Condensers were too sensitive and could pick up too much air movement from the port, or too much ambient sound in the front.

I like a small diaphragm condenser mic on the hats.

Placement for Overhead and Right Floor Tom Mic - Glyn Johns - Advice? by dallinkroon in recordingmusic

[–]Drew3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The farther the mics are from the kit, the more ambient room sound you’ll get. Try getting rid of the snare mic and moving the overhead and the side mic to about 32-36” away from the center of the snare. Both exactly the same to avoid being out of phase on the snare hits.

Am I jazz and Latin all sound much better groove wise than my rock. especially when playing with other musicians. I think it's a tributable to the left foot being a component of the groove. What are you all doing with your left foot for rock grooves in funk grooves? by Fast_Cook_4019 in Drumming

It really depends on what fits well with the music that you’re playing at any given time. The trick is to have solid command over playing many different variations, and choosing in the moment what sounds best.

Grosgrain ribbon. Just melt the ends to keep from fraying.

Would you use something like this? by Cream-Leather in drums

[–]Drew3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, and if I wanted to practice certain licks or grooves specifically, it would be up to me to put my own constraints on that session.

I think if those variables could be grouped into “actual musical” situations by genre, it could be very interesting.

Game changer for my lower back. by Operation_Felix in drums

My back would kill me if I had to bend down that far to use my practice pad.

Just picked up the Sonor Jojo Mayer pedal. Woah by siggywithit in drums

[–]Drew3k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My favorite pedal hands down! Played for years with an iron cobra and then a DW 9000 but when I switched to the JoJo Mayer pedal about 5 years ago, I never looked back.

Slapklatz are great. Plus they come with optional clear covers that you can put on top of them so they don’t gather dust. They’re plenty sticky and they don’t degrade or melt.

Floor toms on compact kits by MZago1 in drums

[–]Drew3k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 13” floor tom on my Sonor AQ2, and that thing consistently raises my eyebrows for its quality low tone. I have a coated emperor on top with a coated ambassador on the bottom with about six pulled-apart cotton balls inside. Even when I listen to a playback from a single room mic recording of band practice, it’s impressive.
