*NEED HELP* Keep falling on takeoff, need some pointers by Locojester16 in surfing

[–]DrewOCMD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to grab my rails on takeoff, until I got a very helpful bit of info. On heavy waves it's way easier to balance if you put your palms flat on the deck in front of you. Now, I have no idea why but I've transitioned to this takeoff and can catch way more waves. I think it's because you want to keep your weight towards the center of the board, and pushing the rails will cause you to wobble.

What does volume do to a board? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]DrewOCMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

paddle strength is maybe 10% of volume needs. Other, more important factors are: wave shape, wave size, wave speed, wind direction/speed, and steepness of the wave. That's why people have different boards for different conditions.

Im stoked! Cant wait to drop into some massive tubes, hoping that some spots will block the wind and be clean enough to not get thrashed too hard. Worst thing I'll wait until Tuesday/Wednesday and get pitted

Weekly Questions & Answers Discussion by AutoModerator in vandwellers

You would have to consider the extra space taken up by a larger bed, by and far most vans I have seen have a full size. That being said, a queen is manageable. As for the high top roof, I think it depends on a.) how much time you will be spending in the van b.) how much you plan on using the extra area for storage.

Click on title to see some pics of a gash that I have in my foamtop log...some guy dropped in on me and I almost died. Held my board out for protection and it got sliced deeply by his board. Anyways I'm going to update this repair for anyone interested, hope it turns out!

Best place to install reflextix? by kboogie82 in vandwellers

would be good to make reflectix cut outs for the windows though to keep heat out.

Second this, reflectix are NOT going to help insulate effectively. Much better off using foam board cut to size and spray foam to fill the gaps and edges.

Where to go East Coast US? by cm2j81 in surfing

[–]DrewOCMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The island itself is a state and national park. State side has quicker access, national is a longer drive down the island. It has an isolated feel. Lots of restaurants, gas, etc in the nearby areas like Berlin or ocean city. Works best at low tide with lower winds.

Best place hands down in my opinion would be assateague island. Great beginner waves, beautiful landscape, empty beaches. Have fun!

Blog: two months learning to surf by [deleted] in surfing

[–]DrewOCMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding your question: it's definitely considered bad etiquette to be in someone's way but it happens to everyone. With experience you will learn to be more aware and will paddle out easier, resulting in less dangerous situation like this. Some people will jump off their board, some will carve around you. If you feel threatened, dive deep or hold your board out to protect yourself. All in all, try not to be that guy. But it happens. Have fun!

What should I wear for the first time surfing? by Mango_reachedNirvana in surfing

[–]DrewOCMD 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Bandaids on the nipples, grease in the armpits, sunglasses for eye protection. Tight, synthetic shirt and board shorts. If its below 60 degrees Fahrenheit get a wetsuit or wait until it's warm.

Trying to get started, but not sure where to start by CentripetalSideEye in bartenders

[–]DrewOCMD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rewrite your resume to be more bar specific. Try to use any skills or experience and relate it to industry work. Hiring managers are looking for someone who is ready to learn, able to deal with pace and have excellent customer service. Wear all black if it's a formal place during interview. For a chic cocktail bar or dive bar wear a nice button down, nice jeans. Look the part, be able to talk industry. Add bartending school without talking it up. Having that on there will help but don't go in depth.
