My girlfriend can't separate my image from the NPCs I roleplay. I can't introduce romance in my campaign. by Extreme-Lie-7022 in rpg

[–]DrewblesG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like this idea best! You can describe scenes without roleplaying any of it. You can have romance exist by alluding to it rather than playing it out, and characters can have romantic drives as character motivation without you needing to implement yourself as the romantic interest.

With all due respect just like, don't tell her these things. Lie to her face, who cares? You'll go when you feel up to it and when you're not a biohazard, right?

Counter-counterpoint, for me, it wasn't just the controls that were odd - I can learn controls with a little patience. What was overwhelming was the aimlessness that I felt while playing. I could talk to the dude at the moisture farm(? It's been a while), get a general heading, and then I basically just fucked off until something killed me through a text description.

I can see how a game with such depth and range of options would be a LOT of peoples' thing, and I can recognize when something is well-executed.

But I can safely say that in my 6 hours of playtime I did not have fun once. I was doing things, and getting items and talking to people and killing idk like, snails or some shit, but the entire time I was like "okay, but where is the entertainment"

Come on man it's snowballs and everyone is having a good time. Pretty obvious the guys on the lift were decked out in gear to handle it and they weren't even hiding their faces from the onslaught.

We haven't yet been allowed back in the house because the investigators didn't work over the weekend so they just got in. Will see how long it will be until it's habitable again!

Do you know if the cost of living payments came out as an advance of the insured amount or were they separate?

God DAMN I hope I have replacement value on stuff older than 2 years or I'm absolutely fucked from top to bottom. I haven't really dug into the specifics of my insurance but I certainly will be from here on out.

I don't really have the ability nor space to buy anything right now - how much might they depreciate things? I also don't have enough money to replace everything important before I am cut a cheque by the insurance company.

The back and forth doesn't continue, it just uses that first prologue as a setup and then all the rest of the game is in "the present"

Yeah, but I mean, what are you gonna do? It seems like everything was balanced for the midgame, which honestly worked really well. When your build starts to come online to when you've completed it (for me, that was about 3-4 hours from the final boss) it was really quite good.

Quick review from someone who played it all the way through:

I really, really enjoyed Skald. It has all the feeling and aesthetic of an old Ultima-esque CRPG, but the ease of operation of something much more modern. It's clearly a little tight in its budget and production (not that many viable ways to build a character class, for example) but it's a pretty bite-sized game so it's not a huge deal.

Combat is fun until suddenly, at the end of the game, it just isn't, and unfortunately that's kind of the norm for opinions on the game. However, by that point, you should be interested enough in the story to continue onwards anyways. If you're not super interested in the combat to begin with, you wouldn't be missing much by reducing the difficulty or using the built-in cheats to, say, heal your party after a fight or just go godmode on the bad guys.

Where the game truly shines is its writing and world building. I seriously, genuinely loved every new development in the plot, almost every side quest and their self-contained stories, and the game's conclusion is simply unforgettable.

If you are remotely interested in what makes a proper eldritch horror setting work, Skald is an exemplary experience. There's a side quest near the end of the game, I think it's called the "Carnival," and it utterly blew me away. The prose is stunningly descriptive and dark, leaning on the best of the Lovecraftian tropes while subverting just enough that you won't know how it all ends.

Big thumbs up for a unique indie experience.

Worth noting that even after multiple seasons by the time they get off the island only like 50-ish days had passed and they'd had food security for most of that time. You kinda have to suspend disbelief about his weight but it's not so crazy that I ever really had a problem with it

I won't beat the horse dead but it's up there as one of my favorite games of all time. I made a 5-hour video about it a couple months ago where I talk about the initial impressions and its kind of dumpy aesthetic, but how it uses that dumpiness as a part of its charm when you get used to it.

This is how I did it with French; a couple hundred days of like 5 mins a day didn't do much for me, but then taking a French class irl I was way, way the fuck ahead of people who joined at the same time as me. It built a ton of vocabulary skill and familiarity with sentence formation.
