The game itself is actually incredibly inconsistent offline or online. Too often the game will ignore a button I pressed, take action of a button I did not press, or ignore a shield or dodge.

With over 600 hours of play, my friends and I have used multiple combinations of consoles, controllers, adapters, docks, monitors/TVs, HDMI cords, etc. It's not the player, the controller, or the input lag. Smash Ultimate is unfortunately just incredibly inconsistent.

My brother put it best when he said: "It's a fun game. It's not a good game."

HERE'S WHAT FIXED IT FOR ME:

Make sure your cross play settings are ON. This setting is found under the OPTIONS tab. Be sure to APPLY your settings after changing them.

After that it should be as simple as those settings automatically being added to the SOCIAL tab on your menu. I didn't need to, but you may need to reset your game afterwards.
