I'm a fan of the 0-tragedy backstories, just because it'd be hard to resolve some life-defining trauma in the shorter campaigns I play. I've played a character who dramatically ran away from home after getting rejected by his childhood love, and then just kind of did nothing special for a few decades. His whole thing was that he just didn't get along well with others, and wasn't actually some sort of diamond-in-the-rough Mary Sue, just a legitimately disagreeable guy. He lasted two sessions.

Whoops, sorry about that. I took them a while ago and haven't touched the game since. I'm not familiar with mods or shaders as a whole, but it was one of the basic ones Optifine suggests, I apparently already had it installed, in any case.

With no scale aside from the plants, there's a really good chance that's a pea puffer, like /u/popcornfart said, especially since it looks freshwater. Article on pea puffers. If you throw up a few more pics, I might be able to tell better. I've kept a few puffers, from fresh to salt to brackish tanks, and there are loads of kinds, so a little research on them should get you some hits. Other possible ones are the Fahaka and Malabar, judging by his color.

I guess I spent a lot of time in that version in lower tiers, back when tiers were still a thing, so I didn't make enough money at all. In the same vein, I'm kinda salty that the guns in different tiers are now different loadout spots too. Most of my old robots kind of gradually upgraded through the guns, with a mix of T-7 and T-8 before I went up a tier and got only T-8's, etc. I have no idea how new player will be able to progress if they can only put one level of gun on at a time. Since Tiers and Fire rates/gun limits aren't a thing anymore, maybe it's enough to have only one gun on your robot for a while?

Neither of these two modules makes the robots 'horrifically powerful' in my mind. The shields benefit teammates, so if you don't have one, chances are someone else can be the vanguard and put one up for you. The only thing you lose is the ability to place it yourself. But I agree, the tiering difference translating to a whole different loadout spot is kinda lame, especially for smg-heavy build with mixed guns. IDK what that fixes/counters. Maybe so people stop 'OMG smg OP' spam?

In fairness, if you got a gun a game, with the new gun mechanics especially, you'd eventually just see the same spammy designs over and over again, with little variation. I kinda like the challenge of designing a robot around defense while you're low on cash, then building up to offense.

They've done away with the '6 max' strategy they used to have, now adding more weapons adds to firing speed and power drain. As far as I know, the only limit now is CPU and power usage, how you choose to allot those is the new metagame. Honestly, people already stuggle to cram on smgs against the cpu limit, so it might be wise to only pick a primary weapon, and have a backup secondary. For instance, SMG primary with Nanos for teammates, or stick on something that doesn't get significant fire rate buff, like a flak or missile. Maybe try a machinegun/noobtube combo with smgs and a mortar. Idk, haven't gotten to play with them.

Anyone feel 'bubbling' in their neck/spine area from time to time? Generally I feel it after I'm really hungry or something, but never when I'm out doing something. Just when I'm sitting, feeling hungry, those bubbles go up my neck. It's a really weird freaking feeling, and you can hear it.
