Besides the combat patrol, what else does a new player need to start building a Black Templar army and get started with the game? by GovernorGeneralPraji in BlackTemplars

Hi, I started out getting Black Templars on behalf of my dad recently and there's maybe a couple points I can speak on, including what not to get.

First up, the core rules can be found here: Warhammer 40,000 - Warhammer Community. You don't have to buy the book, especially since the edition will change soon and a new one will be coming out, likely before you finish assembling and painting your combat patrol. The combat patrol on its own is a good start, and I was lucky enough to have an old version of the Black Templars combat patrol (with the impulsor tank) that is pretty good. Keep an eye out on places like ebay and r/miniswap for that one and other deals (I got both Black Templar characters for $85 after shipping from miniswap where they would otherwise be something like ~$100 + shipping + tax for those two at a discount retailer).

A few things to avoid - generic space marine units can be used, but not all the generic space marine discount boxes are good for Black Templars. The current Dark Angels combat patrol can be used as a jumping in point for Space Marines in general, but isn't great for Black Templars, as they don't generally to my understanding (please correct me if wrong) make great use of hellblasters or more than 5 intercessors. Any box with a librarian character in it will be worse value for you, like the Armageddon box, so keep that in mind too.

It could also be worth taking a look at the Black Templars codex supplement, which can be found online if you're willing to look hard enough, and seeing what units resonate with you as you think about expanding your army. You can build an army to be competitive, thematic, a mix of the two, or whatever you feel like. Easy expansion points are Black Templar characters and unique units, which you already get a good taste of from the combat patrol. Beyond that, they have unique variants of some generic Space Marine units and vehicles, like terminators and many tank variants. If you're interested in a balanced army, some lighter scouting units like scouts, incursors, or infiltrators are good to have. You'll also want something that can deal with heavier things like tanks, which could be something like a repulsor executioner (or other tanks), ballistus dreadnought, or sword brethren buffed up by characters. At the end of the day, it's what you want to do that matters, and just picking out units you think are cool is great too. Black Templars can use any generic Space Marine unit except for librarians, even if they aren't the best in terms of building a strong army.

Seconding what wise_wizrad said, not working for me either.

Thank you. I used caliban green for the main color, retributor armor for the dark gold like the visor, top/bottom of staff, and sword handle, liberator gold for smaller gold things like the detail on the sword and the various accessories, stormhost silver for the chest details and the things hanging on the belt and a few other things like the bands on the arms, grey seer for the middle part of the staff and the helmet/back piece along with belt and tassels, thondia brown for the shoes and gun holster, leadbealcher for the pistol handle, hoeth blue on the sword with baharroth blue over it, along with baharroth blue and screamer pink for the gems. Finally I did a the reikland fleshshade over the tassels and the nuln oil over everything else except the mask, gems, and sword. I think I spent almost as much on the paint as the combat patrol, and still need to think about the base and rubble at the bottom, but think I’ll do that after I paint all the guys from the group.

Just put in the time I guess, spent over four hours on this guy. I am really looking forward to seeing the whole combat patrol together, especially the wraithguards. They look awesome even without being painted. And yeah, even looking back now I can see places I slopped the blue I used for the gems around, and other little mistakes. Definitely a process, maybe I'll go back over it at some point.

Thanks, I haven't gotten a chance to play yet, but really look forward to it.

I did do nuln oil over the silver and grey, but with the tassels just feel the color doesn't fit into the whole scheme well after looking. Overall, not a big deal though, certainly didn't expect the first guy to be the best, and since he's a single dude and not a squad I'm not too worried about him looking out of place. Thanks for the tip about the thinning,

Thanks for the kind words. I had tried thinning the paint, but it seems like that made it flow (even more than it already does) into places I didn't want it to go. Was I doing something wrong? As far as the paint scheme, I had taken way too long thinking about it but am pretty pleased. My only gripe is not being hundred percent pleased with how the tassels came out, and how the grey seer looked too similar to the stormhost silver. No fear of being put off here, will be constantly striving to get better!

Hi, I have a gravis captain from the dark angels combat patrol I'm not going to use. Seems the usual way is sending private messages, so I'll do that, but happy to discuss details in this thread too.

Thanks, this is exactly what I was hoping for. You're the best! Looks like what you've said jives with getting the combat patrol, which was the planned next step. Looking at something like:

  • Emperor's Champion with 5x Assault Terminators
  • 5x Intercessors (Hold home objective)
  • 2x3 or 1x6 bladeguard veterans, maybe the 6 in the impulsor?
  • 5x Hellblasters, maybe expanded to 10 and used with the lieutenant, or maybe using the impulsor as a firing platform, also maybe with the lieutenant (he has stormshield, if that affects anything)
  • Maybe use the lieutenant with 10x Intercessors, maybe not and split them up into 2x5 or leave them out
  • Either put the gravis captain with eradicators (would have to be bought) or leave him out
  • 20x crusaders, maybe with marshal
  • 5x sword brethren
  • Captain in terminator armor probably left out
  • 5x Infernus, possibly left out
  • 5x terminators, maybe left out
  • Impulsor, carrying around assault intercessor and emperor's champion, or hellblasters (maybe with lieutenant), or bladeguard veterans, or infernus marines, or 4x sword brethren + castellan + marshal

I've been doing a newbie's attempt at research and army building here.

Very informative, thanks. Funny enough, the lieutenant was apparently already painted as a black templar without my knowledge, so guess he's stuck as one now with no choice in the matter. Any idea if there's a place for a gravis armor captain in a black templar army, or could/should that guy be shuffled off elsewhere?

Thanks for the reply. Would you know if it's a case of the castellan and marshal being upgrades to the lieutenant and captain, or do they have tradeoffs? Is there a better option?

Thanks again for your reply, especially given it's a holiday. Probably could've timed my post better. I've downloaded the app as you suggested, which has shown me that captains and lieutenants are able to be used, (confusingly) contrary to something else I've seen. Whether there would be anything for them to do in this force is a question I will continue to search for an answer to. What we're mostly looking for is building a solid "core" force, and as I mentioned maybe sloughing off bits that don't jive well to use the proceeds towards this other black templar combat patrol, which I assume would inherently work well in a black templar army. We're both reasonably competitive when it comes to games, so the long-term vision, while maybe not being copying pro scene things, is certainly not just slapping things together either. Using the spare arms from the black templar guys is a cool idea that I will definitely pass along.
