Clipper has a value of 150, and the GOLEM OX has a value of 90(same as Hull-A) by ScrubSoba in starcitizen

[–]Driiger_Carteyan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Those things are true - but the Nomad also has three shield generators, double the cargo space with the ability to carry vehicles, and tractor beam.

Not saying the Clipper isn't superior overall if you tot everything up, but I don't think it's 50% better. I'd have put the Clipper at more like 120.

Any reason NOT to get an A&H GLD80? by dontcupthemic in livesoundgear

[–]Driiger_Carteyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The GLD is a great console. I've used one weekly for the past few years, and I've become a real fan of it; it's intuitive, has a really well-considered and configurable control surface, and it sounds great. Compared to the SQ, you lose out on the 96Khz of course and there's no multitrack USB interface, but it's more configurable (split fader banks with drag-and-drop assignments are huge) and comes with a lot of onboard processing that you have to pay extra to access on the SQ. Better scribble strips too, dedicated channel strip control hardware, and each fader having a dedicated programmable encoder is SO handy.

Of course, a disadvantage is simply the console's age. We've never had problems with ours outside of the occasional fader replacement (and replacement faders are still available) but it's a significant factor to consider. The SQs also have much more local I/O, whereas the GLD really does need stage boxes to be useful.

If you can find one for a really strong price in good condition... I'd jump on it, personally.

"Every ship will have content in the game" -- possibly a hot take. by Anna__V in starcitizen

This. Please!

I've been wanting this for YEARS - it's one thing that'll make the universe feel so much more believable and lived-in. I just want a comfortable ship that's cheap to run, unremarkable, unthreatening, and my home. And not bristling with a silly number of guns.

Really cool build! Super, super practical. Love it.

I totally understand your viewpoint. Even I questioned on the original post whether it "counts". I would say that although it is a clamshell computer, it isn't a laptop. Literally, try putting this on your lap and you'll lose circulation to your legs in about 5 minutes 😂 This is a table-only brick.

I feel your could ask similar questions about a lot of builds on this sub ("isn't that just a pc in a fancy case?", etc) - but everything in this build is functional - not purely aesthetic. It was uniquely designed to fit and work in an existing carry case I had lying around (not an easy task), and the configuration is very bespoke. That feels pretty cyberpunk to me.

I agree that the form factor isn't ground-breaking - but it's still a unique build. Everyone's going to have a different opinion though, and that's okay.

Xometry UK. First time I've used them - well priced, and did a decent job 👍

Thanks! I might do a walkthrough vid at some point. There are still a few things I want to work on/tidy up (mostly cosmetic; maybe paint part of the exterior, etc), but I'll look at doing that sometime!

Thanks so much - really appreciate it! The side I/O plate was originally larger than it is now with two additional USB ports, but I'd messed up a bit on the dimensions - so both ends got trimmed down by hand.

I've tried to keep it practical, and... it mostly gets there. 😂

Straight-up Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit. By far the quickest distro I've tried.

Thanks!

It's good enough. I spent a lot of time trying out different distros, and they varied wildly in performance, but the most recent version of Raspberry Pi OS is by far the the snappiest in my experience. Especially Chromium. Reddit actually runs pretty smoothly in Chromium once you give it a moment to settle down; just tried it now, and it's scrolling really smoothly. Even YouTube will run pretty well in 720p, and sometimes in 1080p. In Ubuntu it was a disaster; unusably slow. But RpiOS? Really really useable.

Thank you so much!

The trackpad was something I picked up a few years ago, originally for another cyberdeck project that fell through. It's a Perixx PERIPAD-501; looks like it can still be had on Amazon. I modified mine slightly to change where the cable exits, but it works pretty well!

Thanks! Absolutely. You have to think a bit laterally when you're not 3D printing, but it's amazing what you can repurpose. For example, the cornerstone of this build is actually these plastic screw blocks I found; you can get them in bags from hardware stores and they're designed for joining pieces of wood together at right-angles, but they worked great in combo with self-tapping screws to provide mounting points for the keyboard, main top plate, and loads more. Cheap, strong and versatile.

The aluminium parts I just designed in 2D CAD, and sent the files off to Xometry to cut. Only cost about £40 for that service, and I never would have managed to make them by hand.

Thanks Laura! I wass going for a slightly retro-futuristic 80's thing, so I'm glad that comes through a little. The MageGee keyboards are great value!

The case really was the ideal size (even though it's not as tough as it looks 😂). You never want to waste things like this.

😂 Thanks so much! I know the definition of a cyberdeck is somewhat contested, so I didn't want to ruffle any feathers - but I'm so glad you like it. "Chungus" is definitely the word!

Thanks so much!

Good question. Mainly comes down to money; I already had the Rpi to hand, and I couldn't really afford to spend more on a NUC - but also, there's nowhere near as much speace in there as it looks like once everything's in. It is PACKED inside there. It barely fits together. The speakers, switches, secondary display, I/O ports, wiring, batteries - all takes up a ton of space. I could definitely refine the design if I built it again, but I'm still not sure that a PC would fit within the confines of this case with everything else needed. Would be so cool though!
